Which city to move to in Canada?

I moved to Vancouver from Alberta in my early 20's. I thought, yeah this place is expensive compared to Alberta (Calgary).

But then I thought about it further.

Most of my friends worked day jobs in service industries. Some in film. We lived in shitty DTES apartments. We made just enough to escape the weekends to the mountains, party in Gastown, and bang enough strange to keep us from going mental.

But I wanted more. Realizing that no body in Vancouver wanted to do trades work, I got my metal fab ticket. Suddenly I was making $70k a year. Guys around me still complained though that they were broke.

I left those kids behind. I worked toward a future built on my talents and focused on a path of freedom. It was, and still is, sketchy. But every year I get more for myself and rely less on others.

The point of this story is Vancouver is not for the entitled. If you have money and move here, have game and style, this is far and away the best city on the west Coast.

If you want to do hard, strategic work and not just flail around from job to job, then this city will deliver in time. Most are content to flail. This is good for people like me, the pool of talent gets smaller the closer to the top you get. The kings of the city are never too far away here, or too inaccessible.

Man-kids would rather hang out, do shitty service jobs and bitch about money than do anything that requires sobriety and self sacrifice.

I have left a lot of friends behind in Vancouver. More than any other city I have lived in. The mentality is either inspiring, or draining.

Good luck. You know my advice, and this is not even touching on the pussy aspect.

In regards to pussy, there is more than I can handle here. Way more.

@casa-nostra: Tech in Van and Vic are booming. I will say it's booming as a developer, not as sysadmin or etc. Last calls 230.

@scotian: bro you must have a different dynamic vs Victoria, everytime me and buddies hit up Vic we slay. Going to the island is easy mode for us.

Tech in Canada is a joke compared to the USA. Double incomes in software in comparison. It's hard to find a sr developer when 3 hr drive Seattle & a TN visa will pay 1.5-2.0x minimum.

If your a Canadian software developer and want to have fun, just get a job in New York. If you want your career & pay to be the best, go the SF bay. Dating is harder in SF, but the weather is better. Probably more hippies & festivals in the bay if that's more your thing.

And if you live in the bay area, avoid the south bay, go for east bay or SF proper.

The OP said that he dont have the option to leave Canada yet.

But i think in Alberta the salary are as high as in US for IT right ?

And when you are talking about high salary IT in US,it is only for developer jobs or all IT jobs ?

Oil is in the shitter right now, so I don't know how good it is for jobs like I.T, I met a girl with a chemical engineering degree from McGill here in Fort McMurray, she's working at Sportcheck.

Laner, that was a great post "Man-kids would rather hang out, do shitty service jobs and bitch about money than do anything that requires sobriety and self sacrifice." Too true.

I haven't ever heard of Alberta's tech salaries being higher than the West Coast or Toronto. Mind you they get taxed less though.

The US will almost always beat Canada in terms of pay, especially in IT. If you're a developer and in it for the money, always go south.

Plausible that a girl with a chemical engineering degree is working at Sport Chek, but there must be a reason (hometown, living with parents or bf) why anybody with these qualifications would choose the Sport Chek in Ft Mac. As I recall if anyone got 'canned' from their high paying Ft Mac job, they couldn't get out of town fast enough.

I'm applying for jobs in Montreal and Vancouver. Best offer will help me make a decision. I'm still going to finish my last course 31st of August, so I still have time.

And let me guess you haven't gotten a single call back from Vancouver.

I have a $1 a month bet that you don't really want to move.

Yes, it doesn't take much research to find out that the Vancouver area is the strongest economic region in the country right now and is on track to stay that way for the next few years. The problem is, which has been mentioned on here before, is the lack of affordable housing.

Vancouver is enjoying a jobs boom, but young workers still can’t afford housing

Montreal hasn't had a booming economy since the mid-1970's.

Government job in your future?

I can't work for the Government, I'm an International Student here. I would love to leave Montreal and explore the rest of Canada by working a month in every city [Image: biggrin.gif]. However, that's not possible and in MTL most jobs need French (I don't have that) and it's too cold, so I would love to move west.

Another important factor is that it's easier for me to get residency here in Quebec. So if I find a decent job I'm going to stay here.

Ah yes, the Quebec residency scam. la belle province is the only one to control its own immigration peogram (unlike the ROC which is controlled by Ottawa), so many immigrants go there first because they get the citizenship faster, then of course they fuck off out of Quebec to make more money elsewhere. I'd say about half of the Colombians I've met in Alberta previously lived in Montreal before migrating west.

Actually, I'm a student in Quebec so its easier for me. Just like if I studied in Ontario or BC, it would be easier since I can get a nomination without a job. These colombians that come here, pretty much get everything so easily and don't really contribute to Quebec. However, I spent a lot of money here and I'm willing to work, and at the same time will be contributing to the province.

I know jj90 but I got nothing to lose when I apply, I might get lucky.

Cattle Rustler, the final Quebec skilled worker immigration program application is this month. After that the system will change, unless you are have a job offer or studied here then the process is different.
