This is more of a rant than a post about a specific story. I've been listening to NPR since I was a kid, so for over 30 years. They have always had a left-of-center slant, but I generally found their coverage informative. However, in the last few years it has gotten really really bad. All that cultural programming that was mostly relegated to the universities 20 years ago has now seeped thoroughly into media and government institutions. When I turn it on now I will play little game and see how long I can listen before I hear a story involving "the narrative". It doesn't take long. A matter of minutes, usually. How many stories do we need about the gays or transgenders? Someone defied a sterotype, and another oppressed minority must deal with this or that obstacle... And lastly, the voices of the male announcers have gotten more and more effeminate and uptalky over the years. I find myself getting annoyed and turning it off quite often.

The best stuff recently has simply been the schadenfreude of hearing Simon Schama and David Brooks bemoaning Brexit. Suck it! Haha.

It would be so awesome if Trump wins, just to hear the wailing and gnashing of left-wing teeth.

1. Every "male" announcer sounds like an uptalking wuss who has no testosterone.
2. Stories are all about transgeners, gays, girl power, lesbian poets from [insert generic Third World country], misleading statistics, racial baiting and incitement, environmental doom, wymyn fighting evil white patriarchies, etc.
3. No masculine men anywhere in sight or hearing.

I keep telling you guys: don't listen to this shit. Turn it off and listen to audio books instead.

I'd like to emphasize the bolded part.

Like Quintus said in one of his podcasts - 'Garbage in, garbage out.' I've become much more serene as a person after I've minimized the news I get from sources such as this forum and ROK.

The added free time I use to listen to audiobooks - just finished listening to Benjamin Franklins autobiography.

If I read/listened to stuff likes this as a kid - my life would have been simpler. Ah, well - better late than never!

Yes, I totally agree NPR is biased crap. Even in the newspaper biz where reporters lean to the left, NPR got laughed at for being so ridiculously leftist. It's almost like unintentional satire.

But that said, I don't think NPR is such a big problem because in order for them to be an influence you have to tune in. Most American's don't. The average guy listens to sports and the average woman bops along to Top 40 or country.

In my opinion, Twitter and Facebook are the more malevolent influence, because they're influencing the masses, not preaching to the converted.

Did anyone ever stop to think about *why* exactly, these companies came up with a "trending" concept? It wasn't there when either started, yet now you can't get rid of it.

"Trending" is used about 30-50 percent of the time or more to either push an SJW cause or promote an SJW-friendly celebrity or their work. This gets to the masses. Very Big Brother.

That average person might be going along his or her day when all of a sudden they're being fed bullshit about Trump through their "trending" feed. Then they start to think "OMG! Trump said something bigoted" when he really didn't.

Both Facebook and Twitter are also doing de facto censoring by removing posts they deem unacceptable and banning users like Milo and Roosh.

Social media is looking like it's a front for thought control. It was supposed to be about communication but it's gone real quick to indoctrination.

This needs its own thread -- sorry for digressing here but this is a major pet peeve with me.

Trending on social media and portals like Buzzfeed, Gawker, MSN, AJ+, is responsible for so much indoctrination of young people these days, and many older people too (who you would have hoped would be less susceptible to propaganda but it's often not the case).
Kraut and Tea provides an example here, AJ+ really are one of the most insiduous channels out there in terms of propagandising young people:

How do you fight this kind of brainwashing?
I've come to conclusion that trying to debate with people on Twitter and Facebook is largely useless.
Confirmation bias is endemic, especially among modern day liberals, who are becoming more hardened in their prejudices and becoming insufferable SJWs and progressives.
I think Youtube or similar video platforms is a better bet, the likes of Stefan Molyneux and Sargon of Akkad, whether you agree with what they say or not, have had way more reach and influence in recent years thanks to their YouTube audiences.

Yes, they are consistently left leaning. Any potentially negative article about Hillary Clinton they'll make the apologists case and quote her campaign advisors as if they are giving a neutral statement of fact. However, here's the difference, they cover stories that other left leaning sources won't even touch. I find that much of the media lies through omission. If something doesn't fit the narrative they aren't going to argue against it, they refuse to even address it. NPR covers a wide range of stories. Many people won't even read right leaning news stories and refuse to inform themselves on any story not covered by their "legitimate" sources. NPR is helpful in that it covers stories and at least exposes liberals to those that they would rather ignore.

Also they have really good music coverage.

Radiolab is still worth a listen as is the BBC World Service. Occasional smattering of good content here and there otherwise, depending on your local affiliate.

You don't get it. What you call 'stories that nobody else covers' are liberal agenda items they are eager to disseminate. NPR is a full blown SWJ impersonate. Nothing good come from listening to their dribble. Stop listening to that shit and do your own research - don't let others do the thinking for you.

I think of NPR is as the official propaganda arm of the Deep State. Similar to Radio Free Europe if not more sophisticated in its message delivery.

In other words, its particular messaging, taken on average, is exactly what the Deep State would like every American to believe. Thus, while frustrating to listen to (ie: fuck, my tax dollars are paying for pro-Hillary media coverage!), especially during crises that can have a strong liberal slant, it's also a bit like auditing the globalists for their most precise political tone on any one issue.

Sure, this messaging is also mirrored through other programming in television for instance, but I consider NPR to be the most direct source for government propaganda.

My experience, driving across the country, is that conservative areas often have overlapping coverage of NPR stations. That is, more NPR than other places on average. I always suspected this was a fairly obvious method to influence Red State America toward Blue State opinions (and no doubt it has an effect). I've also always suspected that many Red State people know this, resent it, and it erodes their trust further in the government.

There actually was a second interview which I cannot find anymore. He basically accused the NPR of being hypocrites for calling themselves a publicly funded radio station whilst at the same time accepting corporate sponsors. I was stuck in L.A. traffic at the time and almost hit the car in front of me because I was laughing so hard.

The best part was Gene's personality being so far outside of Terry's scope. To quote Bill Burr, he's been in the zone for 30 years. Even if you don't agree with him, any reasonable person should be able to see why he is the way he is and respond accordingly.

Terry Gross is generally one of the best interviewers out there. Granted I only listen to her interviews maybe 3-4 times per year but she seems to really be one with the interviewee. She generally doesn't take sides but takes the side of the interviewee.

Haven't watched the gene simmons interview but he's a bit egotistical (understatement) and kiss sucks anyway so i don't have any interest.
