Also, if Nehlen wins, Trump can say "this movement is bigger than me, folks. I endorsed one guy and the other one ends up winning! You're calling the shots," and avoid having to wage war with the Chamber of Commerce Republicans during the General. The CoC won't be able to blame Trump if Ryan loses, and Trump can make the people look good and all-powerful.

Today's the big day. Will be interested in how close the gap is in the end, and how said gap compares to recent "polling".

If the Democrats were smart they would be uniting their member base to vote for Nehlen since it's an open primary. Getting Paul Ryan out of congress should be a priority for them as much as it is for us.

Guess we'll see...

It was perfectly strategic. He wins both ways; I think he's hoping hard that Ryan gets booted but the "endorsement" was clear contingency.

Does anyone know what time we can expect results to start coming in?

^ just googled and it says polls close at 8 p.m., so not before that.

Also not sure what time zone Wisconsin's in, I assume CST? which would be 9 p.m. EST, I guess.

If Ryan's really "up" 80-14 as the "polling" indicates then the race should be immediately declared for him when polls close. Unless that sort of thing only happens when there's exit polling and primaries don't have exit polls, in which case it'd take some time... but yeah, 8 central, 9 eastern, 6 pacific time. We'll see!

So assuming Paul Ryan retains his seat.

Does he remain speaker of the house or are changes likely to the Republican structure if Trump wins?

Per wikipedia:

Quote:Quote:

The House of Representatives elects the Speaker of the House on the first day of every new Congress and in the event of the death or resignation of an incumbent Speaker. The Clerk of the House of Representatives requests nominations: there are normally two, one from each major party (each party having previously met to decide on its nominee). The Clerk then calls the roll of the Representatives, each Representative indicating the surname of the candidate the Representative is supporting.

Although no rule exists, based on tradition and practice from the earliest days of the nation, to be elected speaker a candidate must receive an absolute majority of all votes cast for individuals, i.e. excluding those who abstain. If no candidate wins such a majority, then the roll call is repeated until a speaker is elected. The last time repeated votes were required was in 1923, when the Speaker was elected on the ninth ballot.

The questions are:
-How does the Clerk of the House of Reps determine the nominations?
-If the Clerk can't restrict Ryan's nomination, can you coordinate your pro-Trump reps to vote for a name that wasn't nominated?
-Will the informal "absolute majority" rule still be enforced if the Democratic candidate (Pelosi?) receives a plurality, but not majority, of the House vote? And are there enough Trumpist representatives who dig in and keep voting Trump such that the Paul Ryan backers give up and acquiesce?

I don't understand how Nehlen can do this. If he lost the primary, he will not be in the House, and therefore, how could he run for Speaker?

^ I'm not sure of the legalities involved either. Honestly, it really doesn't matter to me how Nehlen does it, that supercuck Ryan's got to go. They could settle it in a "Loser Leaves Town" ladder match for all I care.

Speaker of the House

I think it would actually be a better choice for the speaker to be a non law-making officer, elected by the house. One less thing to claw others' eyes out for.
It may be like a D/RNC leadership position.
