My trick for this is to order a soda water and ask the bar tender for it in a rocks glass (or whatever they serve vodka sodas in) and tip well ($1-2 more than other patrons are tipping on a full priced cocktail). If there's more than one bar tender, do this with each bar tender. Now if later in the evening a you're ordering drinks with a girl you can just tell the bar tender "I'll have another" or "Give me the usual" and they'll know give you the soda water in the rocks glass.
