My favorite books as a kid were the following Yugoslav-era novels:

Vlak u snijegu (A Train In The Snow) (Mato Lovrak, 1930) - a courageous 4th grader organizes the survival and rescue effort after his class's school trip gets stuck in a blizzard

Later on I graduated to these Polish novels:

In Desert and Wilderness (Sienkiewicz, 1911) - a Polish boy and British girl whose parents are staying with their parents employed at the Suez canal get kidnapped by Islamic terrorists and are taken to Sudan for ransom. The the boy turns the tables on the kidnappers, kills them and leads his group into various adventures in the African wilderness.
The Girl and the Boy (Hana Ožogowska, 1961) - due to some misunderstandings and a family feud, two Polish siblings accidentally get mistaken for each other and taken on each other's intended vacations. The sister goes to a harsh, masculine uncle who lives in the mountains and has to pretend she's a boy and chop wood, fish and hunt. The brother goes to his aunt's place in a small town and has to pretend he's a girl while dealing with housework, social intrigue, bullies and gossip. Both do an admirable job at their new duties, but in the end the girl breaks down and reveals herself while the boy aces it and remains undetected.
