The dog Thread!

Ideal dogs for the future would be either a Bernese or a Newfoundland. Or maybe a Husky, but I hear they need to see a lot of action or they go crazy.

Wonderful beasts.

Family dog growing up was a bichon-cocker spaniel cross and she was the sweetest thing. As crazy as it sounds she still appears in my dreams at least a few times per year.

Just had a conversation with a woman I work with. She was telling me the issues she'd had over the years with their old dog.

Me: "Is it a rescue dog?"
Her: "Yeah"
Me: "Well there ya go"....

It's like getting a new vacuum cleaner that, every time you want to turn it on to vacuum, you have to twist this screw and jiggle this little lever, and sometimes the hose falls off and spews dust all over. Why not just buy a working vacuum...awww, but they were going to throw it in the dump if I didn't buy it for 60% off.

Her: "well not all rescue dogs have issues"
Me: "They don't have to all have issues. If 95% of them piss on the floor or have separation anxiety, that's enough"

If you want a dog that pisses on the floor when someone pets it, go rescue a dog. If you want a dog you can train to be how you want it, a healthy dog, go get a new puppy.

We euthanize over 500,000 a year in the U.S. You aren't saving the planet buy not rescuing a dog. Watch the nature channel, horrible things happen to animals every day all over the world. It's not your fault.

There's nothing wrong with rescuing a dog, just understand you're probably buying a broken vacuum. There's nothing heartless with getting a new puppy, you're just saving yourself a lot of hassle.

The real metaphor there is about how chicks always wanna rescue dogs like they wanna rescue men (actually, I just made it a simile).

If you're trying to pick up chicks, best to mix in a little imperfections so she wants to rescue you. I wouldn't piss on the floor or have separation anxiety with her, but maybe show a colder side of yourself, maybe show a flash of anger or hatred as if you were injured in the past.

I grew up with labs and would say that they're the ideal dog, but man, I'm actually smitten by Bernese. Their look and demeanor just make me melt (god, I sound so sappy). I would get one in a heartbeat, but the thought that I would lose it within 6-8 years just tears me up inside. So, I've held off. I'm hoping that this CRISPR stuff can be put to good use in dogs first to fix the genetic issues with a lot of the breeds.

Bump.

About 2 weeks ago got a husky/lab mix. This puppy is smart as hell. Only just under 11 weeks. In these 2 weeks, potty training almost down, "sit" down, "come" down. Working on walking with a leash, fetch and shake.

Puppy looks a lot like this

Just black instead of the brown and both eyes are brown. This puppy is a lot of fun and needs a lot of play and exercise.

What a recipe for trouble! Super smart troublemaker ball of energy lab with a super smart, highly independent, ball of energy husky. You're in for it.

Great combo for an active Alpha dog owner. Good luck, you sound like you got a great little pup there. Keep us posted on how it goes.

Good job on working with obedience. If the dog will be around small children I would be careful with shake. Dogs start to do it automatically and it leads to scratched faces. I always come down hard when people are teaching my dogs that one, simple trick that they learn in 10 minutes.

I can't recommend a "shock collar" enough. Use properly and it is not a substitute for consistent obedience training . My dogs always get completely psyched when it comes out as that means a walk or a hunt. Leads to 100% recall on dog even when they are not wearing it. Even my ultra liberal sister who was horrified by the collar ended up getting one when she got a dog. Lets you have better, more immediate control off leash. Nothing more pathetic and dangerous than some one pleading and cajoling with their dog to come when called.

One zap when my dogs are puppies and go after a moose and they ignore the things for life. That is a big safety deal here. Traffic, Horses, etc. I am sure there are things where you live.

I want a dog but would feel guilty having to crate it up every day while I'm gone to work. I would guess they can't hold it in for 8 hours, 4 if I come home for lunch.

I like dogs as I've had family members with dogs.

My red-pilled aunt has a Puggle who was a foster dog at one point but she got him because the former owner's boyfriend hates dogs and she couldn't get him back. He's 10 years old, but can run like hell. Walking him, he defintely has the Beagle smell skill as he sniffs everything. He has Pug and Beagle facial features on his face with Beagle ears and pug skin coloring. He's the most mellow dog I've seen.

My sister has a Border Terrier who is still high-energy for being 11 years old. He can also be a jackass as every time I walk him, he always barks at other dogs. He managed to get friendly with my Aunt's Puggle provided he doesn't bug him.

I would eventually like to own a purebred Labrador Retriever as I've had great expieriences with them.

Crate training is really useful. My puppy usually sleeps the entire night and they hate going in a place where they have to sleep/lay down. If she has to go that bad she'll bark and whine to wake me up. Take her out and back to sleep. As for 8 hours, usually someone is at the house to play with her let her out as I have kids. If not I go real quick during lunch. Their bladder gets stronger as they get older too.

The problem with hyenas is that they tend to eat your pet zebras.

When I move to the countryside to be a shepherd I'll get some choice shepherd dogs to help me: Blue Heeler, Border Collie and Corgi. I'll have a falcon too, but that is beside the point of this thread.

Love dogs, hate most owners. Irresponsible and inconsiderate dicks for the most part.

Out here in the rural area, loose dogs are a problem. They chase deer, moose and range cows, scare sheep, kill chickens and turkeys.....

City folks move out here and have no respect for others, or the lives of their dogs. They let their dogs run wild. A loose dog around here is GUARANTEED to be a dead dog if any local farmer or hunter sees it. No warnings.

Been here ~15 years and it happens almost every time someone new moves here. They come by looking for their dog, teary eyed that it is missing. I don't even bother to explain anymore as they just go ballistic that someone would shoot their 'innocent and harmless pet'. Usually they get another, rinse and repeat.

It is not the dogs fault. I just wish the farmers would shoot the owner instead. (j/k, sort of)

"Loose and unsupervised in the country is a dangerous place for a dog to be." I dunno if you can offer a more productive and accurate explanation. If they ask for more details "Dog are curious critters to a fault. They get themselves into situations that they can't or won't come back from"

Been there, done that. Pointless. They are in victim mode and nothing but playing into their victim-hood is even heard. Besides, 'my dog would never.....'. Fucking morons.

I used to warn new folks not to let their dogs run free for above listed reasons. Dog goes missing. They show up accusing me. I tell them to fuck off and never return.

So then I adopted, "That is a shame. Maybe you should keep it on your property next time". Usually they become indignant as they feel the dog should be able to roam free. Again, fucking inconsiderate morons.

Now, "Nope. Have not seen it". Even if I know that farmer John just dropped it in his compost heap.
