Do you go to the gym just to attract girls?

I work out at home by carrying heavy things I bought at home depot until I'm too tired to keep going. It's nice because I don't have to drive anywhere. Gym is a social melting pot for fit people, nothing more.

Hell no. Really I do it for the "pump" and to help the natural anxiety I have. I can't wait to get a session in tommorow.

Not that I'm against hard work at home, or the home Depot. In fact, the feeling after a good lift is perry much the same feeling as accomplishing a tough house construction project. As for the rest of your post, I wasn't sure of the point...

I go play basketball to socialize (and for cardio and competition).

I don't go to the gym and lift to socialize. I think many guys on here sympathize.

Absolutely. I love training alone.

That's not saying that I don't talk to guys in the gym, especially guys I see a few times in a row or have Oly shoes as well.

The three biggest time wasters in the gym:
1. Talking
2. Trying to pick up women
3. Looking at your phone.

No extra attention from women in highly visual environments such as Tinder?

Are you in Toronto or the UK where chunksters have the pick of the crop or somewhere?

I initially went to the gym to help me at the sport I loved playing since my default skillset and build didn't suffice for what I wanted to do. The strength gained from lifting enabled me to coast on strength more than skills.

I never believed that lizards cared about a swole physique as I grew up in a culture where likes are not overtly expressed. As a byproduct of lifting hard and heavy, my body began cut up and I noticed more respect from dudes and lizards honing in to squeeze my engorged parts.

That being said, I still don't lift really for lizards. I lift to relieve stress and release endorphins in my body. Even if I had seven different lizards each week, after a while of no lifting, I would become restless with no gym activity and have a case of gym bulimia where I would look at my body and cringe at how 'small' it is. This would cause me to antagonise those around me as a way of lashing out.

Yep. Mainly for girls

It's nice to get the added benefits of health and strength plus the post-workout endorphin rush is intoxicating. I'm even starting to like the actual bodybuilding lifestyle. But I mostly lift for vanity & physical attractiveness. No girls? Then no curls for me.

I think some of you are being a little dishonest when you claim you primarily lift for yourself. "Girls are just a byproduct brah!!" and such sounds a bit like male hamsterization.

Guys deep into Strongman/Powelifting and athletes who train for sports like American Football and Rugby are obviously exceptions.

But your average lifter who's on a 4x/week bro split, chugs oats and is almost in tears from eating another Rice/Chicken/Broccoli combo, would definitely quit lifting if women's genetics suddenly got rewired and they preferred 140 pounds twinks.

You're average gym bro? yes, perhaps. But I don't see why it should follow from that that the men here must be being dishonest, or letting their male hamster run riot. I train for a variety of reasons, some are professional, some are rational, educational, and moral. Leaving aside the professional reasons, my motivations for training are primarily that I think more clearly, study better, and generally possess more elasticity of mind when I do so. On top of that, I try to live a life that pursues Goodness as the highest truth, one that prizes integrity and kindness. In order to do that, for this to be a reflection of strength, and that I might be uncompromising in applying these principles even when to do so might endanger my person, it is important that I be fully capable of 'handling' myself should the need arise.

My example is obviously specific to me, however, I see no reason to doubt that others here should not have their own equally reasonable motivations for training that do not place attracting girls very high on the list of factors.

For what it is worth, I do not discuss training or motivations for doing so at dinner parties. I am aware that I sound like an insufferably sanctimonious bore when I do so! But this is the internet, and my id runs wild.

I think this may have something to do with you being black old chap. When I'm engorged, the 'lizards' look distinctly underwhelmed!

My motivation for weightlifting is roughly 40% girls, 60% health reasons. Throughout my whole life I was a chubby fatass whose archenemy in elementary school was the physical education teacher. I live in a country where obesity rates are among the highest in Europe and growing steadily. Furthermore, some of my close family members are seriously ill.

So I really can't complain about a lack of motivation.

You don't do Olympic-style weightlifting for anyone but yourself.

Take a look at the best guys in the world. Outside of Klokov and one or two others, they look like normal guys. You wouldn't be able to tell if they lifted if you saw them walking down the street.

I'd agree there are some people that are dishonest with themselves on the forum. I see the whole I do it for myself thing all over the place, but then I constantly see people talking about how it's better to have higher bodyfat than to be cut so that they look big in clothes and that's what people see - so in that case those people must be doing it for other people's approval / reactions (either that or they're hamstering an excuse to be a little fat).

You make it sound like it is one or the other, it's both.

I started lifting for 3 main reasons.

1. To have a good body that girls like.
2. To be bigger and stronger because I was always skinny (I.E. more respect from other guys)
3. To get better at Jiu Jitsu.

My point before was that almost everyone STARTS for girls, but if you don't enjoy the act of lifting, and are only doing it for girls, you won't stick with it. If lifting isn't fun for you, girls alone won't keep you motivated to lift heavy several times per week for years.

As far as people on the forum "hasmtering" their bodyfat, it's better to be lean, as long as you're not 150 pounds. But it isn't good to be fat. Not being lean doesn't equal being fat. I'd much rather be 190 at 15% than 150 at 8%.

My goal is in fact to be 152lb and 8% BF. Works for both powerlifting (-146lb weight class) and boxing (amateur welterweight -152lb). I'm only 5'7" though, can't be 190lb 15%.

Ok ok. You and Scotian got me lol.

I'm 5'10, so being 150 pounds would be pretty small for me.

I don't. Sure many get into it for the women,. But those that stay with it , that go beyond what most women would care about do it for other reasons. For many of us it's about the process. I like how Victor Pride articulates this...

Quote:Quote:

Do you lift just to get girls?

Just like every straight man on the planet you will start lifting for all the hot cooz. Over time your lifting takes on a meaning of its own and you start developing goals just for yourself. No broad is ever going to ask you if you deadlifted 500 lbs that day. No girly in some bar somewhere is going to ask you if you bench with 100 lb dumbbells. It doesn’t matter, these are goals that you set for yourself. This is you making the decision to push it to the limit and lift what you could only dream about lifting before. It’s about setting goals, achieving those goals and then setting more goals and crushing them. It’s about not being satisfied with average or good, it’s about becoming stronger and better than you were the day before.

Jacked, fit, lean, spartan…whatever you want to call it. Becoming it is imperative to your betterment. Just because you are a skinny twig now or a fatty now does not mean you can’t become jacked. No one starts out jacked, it takes work to get there. But the beautiful thing is that anyone who wants it, truly wants it, will become it.

You may have been living your whole life making fun of the meat-heads and the gym-rats and the little dicked juice-monkeys but they know something you don’t know – strength. Pride of accomplishment of the body. Perseverance. Pushing through pain barriers. Accomplishment that you can see with your own eyes.

From the skinniest twigs to the fattest fatsos, all who have become jacked will say the same thing…….

I started going to the gym as a hint to my then girlfriend that she needed to lose a few.

She's long gone but the iron is still with me.

I know I can hit any goals I set. Now it's all about the process. Polishing my soul.
