In terms of wind speed, this is the strongest hurricane ever recorded. In terms of pressure it was off by about 10mb. The storm just made landfall with wind speeds of 165mph. Fortunately, the eye started going through the regeneration process just before landfall, weakening it significantly.

Worst ever is subjective. Usually they measure it in terms of dollars in damage or loss of human life, but that is dependent on where the storm hits.

Yeah I know that's what they're saying, but I'm not buying it. If you look carefully at the Haiyan images I posted, they were saying at the time that it was generating 200 mph winds (they like that number). The actual measured wind speeds were in fact much lower (147-171 mph per the other table I posted).

It may seem like wind speeds are what they are and you can't just lie about them, but you'd be surprised. These people are getting very desperate and they're hungry for something big. They had high hopes for Joaquin and were disgusted when it missed the US -- you could feel the terrible letdown on alarmist blogs and boards, they were gearing up for it and licking their lips.

Now these ghouls are hoping for a lot of damage in Mexico -- they realize no one is going to care as much about Mexicans dying as about Americans, but they'll take what they can get and hype it as much as possible.

By the way a very similar storm hit Mexico in 1959 and the damage was pretty bad but you won't hear much about it:

Shit, It's already been raining non-stop since yesterday here. Just fuck my weekend up, Patricia. [Image: dodgy.gif]

Ever noticed the biggest hurricanes are named after women, and they fuck everything up ?

Sandy, Camille, Katrina, now Patricia.

I can't wait for a Hurricane to be called Felicia [Image: lol.gif]

I think they're now all named after Cosby accusers...so they have a bunch of em already lined up

That's f'ing brilliant dude. They should always and only name these hyped hurricanes after Cosby accusers. It's the most perfect marriage imaginable of nasty propaganda and lies.

Has anyone here actually come close to experiencing actual 200mph winds or near to it?

I've experienced 80mph and that was pretty chaotic. Whats 150mph+ like?

Worst I've experienced was when hurricane Ike went through here. 100 mph winds sustained, gusts to 120. Normally I love watching thunderstorms and, against all conventional advice, I plaster my face onto the window to watch the buffeting sheets of torrential rain and hail.

With 100 mph winds, I was cowering in the bathroom, shaking like a leaf, and praying that the tree right outside of my place wouldn't topple over and take me out.

Now with 200 mph+ sustained winds, I can't even imagine. It would pulverize EVERYTHING in its path to nothing but mud.

I understand what you are saying. The hurricane hunters had flight speeds of 235mph, and estimated surface speeds of 191 (+/- 10%). You have to watch for the words sustained and gusts. The media will often times leave out the qualifier for effect.

You are dead on about Joaquin. I was very happy when I saw it going out to sea. Your life has to be pretty pathetic if you are wishing death and destruction on yourself and your neighbors. Anyone cheering for that kind of stuff has never experienced it. I remember being excited when Sandy was on the way. I don't want to go through that again, and I didn't even have it that bad.

I've been indoor skydiving (and real skydiving) - that's around 120 MPH. Anything more will knock you down or send you flying.

Every hurricane, if it's got anything going for it at all, is now the "strongest ever" or the "worst ever" is some other way.

The hype-mongers are backtracking already. Earlier in the day it was "historic, mind-boggling, catastrophic":

It's already happening with the hyped up El Nino this year.

Instead of fearmongering though, they're just getting everyone's hopes up. They attempt to rattle people by claiming "But mudslides!". At this point I think nobody cares if even a thousand homes are lost if it means putting a serious dent in our current drought. As always, time well tell.

El Nino Could Rank Among Strongest On Record
The Strongest El Nino in Decades is Going to Mess With Everything (who comes up with this swill?)
El Nino May Intensify Into Strongest in 50 Years

What's funny is how some articles make sure to point out, "Well, it won't have TOO much of an effect on the drought."

Weather "experts" are assholes.

On a more positive note, here's some Yanet Garcia gifs:

Leave it to RVF to turn a hurricane thread into a conspiracy theory and Mexican weather girl thread, it is what this place does best.

I don't really give a shit about the media and politicians trying to scare people, that is what they do and I just ignore them. I was appreciating the beauty and power of this natural phenomenon. That trippy wind graphic and the video of the dudes flying into the eye of the storm were something I don't see everyday.

Early photos posted (via twitter) some 6 hours after landfall from Manzanila show 2 feet of water in flat areas close to the bay.

Flooding like this is expected. But wind damage from open areas with running wind and projectiles could be more dramatic.

Another photo shows locals bedding down reasonably comfortable shelters by the dozen or two.

The fact is that high mountains along the West coast of Mexico quickly broke up the wind powering the hurricane.

Anybody have a datasheet for post-Hurricane Patricia Mexico? Thinking about getting my raft game on and picking up chicks in the flooded villages, although I've heard iffy things about the ratio.

Mountainous terrain does break up tropical systems because of the updrafts they create when the wind hits them. On the negative side, they also wring the moisture out of the system. This is what causes the massive flooding and mudslides.

It's an extreme example of a rain shadow.

I get that there Hurricane naming system has to work in descending alphabetical order but it just doesn't do justice to the magnitude of destruction they cause.
If you're having coffee in the morning and hear on the radio that Hurricane Katie is coming, you'd shrug and think to yourself 'Another one, huh?'
But if you heard that Hurricane Motherfucker was on the way, you'd run for the hills.

I died at the Hurricane Motherfucker.

Honestly I agree, Sandy and Katrina aren't the most intimidating names. Long before they had names, Hurricanes were usually called by the names of where they hit, e.g. Galveston Hurricane of 1900 (still the deadliest) and the Long Island Express of 1938.

I've heard legends about the second one as it was basically a Category 3 Sandy, and back then no one really knew meteorology all too well, so you can imagine what a place that far north experienced.
