How to avoid getting the "beer belly"
10-02-2015, 10:58 AM
These days I'm extremely paranoid about my drinking habits. I usually drink 2-3 times a week while I'm out, while I love drinking Im scared of getting a beer gut. Is there any way to prevent this? I usually order vodka-redbull or Jagerbomb at clubs. My dad keeps telling me that I'll end up with a beer belly pretty soon if I continue drinking like this. I have quite an active lifestyle, I never drive short distances, I walk instead.
I can't game 100% sober in clubs, getting tipsy helps a lot so limiting alcohol intake is out of the question.
I used to weigh 60kg (I'm 179cm) two years ago, after I started drinking heavily in the last two years my weight increased to 68kg, but I still don't have a belly but I'm afraid I will if I continue to put on weight like this. My diet is rich in protein, I usually eat 200-250g of meat everyday without bread/rice, shakshuka for breakfeast, the only unhealthy thing I eat is chocolate, thats another big addiction for me too
Is there any other way I can prevent myself from getting the belly, perhaps drinking wine instead of vodka/redbull?

Calories are calories. If you take in (food, alcohol) more than you use up (exercise) you get fat.
Exercise can only do so much. You could run for half an hour and bun fewercalories than you'll take in in 5 minutes of eating.
I don't drink and still have to be careful about my eating habits.

Calorie balancing. Eat less, drink more. Of course you might end up killing yourself with that approach, so I recommend cutting back on the drinking instead.
Approximate calorie numbers:
3 cans of pilsner beer (~460 kcal total, around a quarter to a fifth of the daily maintenance calories for someone of your weight, depending on activity level) = 5 vodka shots = 4 gin or whiskey shots = 80 g of chocolate = 300 g of chicken breast = 260 g of veal = 6 eggs = 170 g of white bread = 22 tomatoes = 4 large bananas.

You answered your own question.

I could go on and talk about the estrogenic effects of beer, why estrogen causes fatty buildup in undesirable areas like the stomach and chest, and how the process of distillation for certain hard liquor completely sidesteps estrogenic effects, but you get the idea.
I just googled it, apparently whiskey is estrogenic somehow. Tequila, vodka, and rum are not. If you absolutely have to water it down, you could drink it on the rocks or go with hard apple cider. Hard apple cider, for whatever reason, is extremely low in estrogens.
Also, you don't want to binge a shitload of carbs while you're drunk. The combination of alcohol (which spikes your insulin) and the carbs will lead to increased fat storage. If you're going to get hammered it's best to get the majority of your daily calories out of the way first.

Geeze 68 kilos is nothing you're skinny fat!
Get lifting and lift hard. Enjoy an occasional drink, but try to eliminate it entirely. If you need an intoxicant, use herb.
You need a bulking diet and routine stat! I'm only two inches higher than you and weigh almost 95 kg.

Avoiding a beer belly is simple, just burn more calories than you take in. Be aware of the calorific content of your drinks, and plan your diet accordingly.
60kg (132lbs) at 179cm (5ft 11) is extremely skinny, though. Even 68kg (150lbs) at that height is very underweight.
At that weight your number one priority should be putting on muscle - you should be aiming to put on about 10kg of muscle on that frame to look normal, never mind fit. You should start lifting heavy, not worry about any potential beer belly.

Men just store fat round their waste, it doesn't matter where the calories come from.
I am back to my 2009 weight, the best diet change I've found is to avoid sugar and drink more water. I've been doing this for nearly a year now. I don't often get hunger binges, plus I'm eating stuff which is more natural.
I've also shifted my eating to earlier in the day. The side effect of this is that you don't need to sleep so much.
My weight loss has been slow, but rapid weight loss is not the way to go if you have long term weight loss goals.

Try high quality vodka and diet tonic/soda. It's about as clean and low calories as you can get excluding straight vodka. I would then limit it to special occasions and try to avoid making drinking a regular thing; especially if you're not super active.

I'm 200 lbs 6'1 and barely starting to get a beer belly (top abs are still defined, bottom are invisible without flexing).
Depending on your body type, you'll be fine. Though I suggest trying to gain up a little bit

Don't drink, but if you have to drink, then drink straight vodka or whisky.
Don't eat while you are drunk, fast the next day.
= Problem solved.

You have to limit your alcohol habits. I'm not saying stop drinking because every time I go to club, although I don't want, I end up drinking either. But you can always limit. Drink two glasses of whiskey for instance and never eat late at night. Hence, definitely start lifting. That's what I am doing, and I see the results each passing day.

I've pretty much stopped drinking beer.
The only exception is if I am doing hard manual labor, like chopping wood or something. It feels good to crush a corona after something like that.

I have a hard time believing that whiskey and Coke is any better for you, metabolically speaking, than beer. But maybe you can feel the effects faster and so drink fewer calories that way.
Scotch and soda is a pretty good drink, and is sugar-free.
If only you knew how bad things really are.
