I felt a great disturbance in the Force. As if millions of Facebook Yoga Moms cried out in terror...and were suddenly triggered.

It would make sense for a female Dalai Lama to have to be attractive, because Buddhism teaches that beauty/handsomeness are the karmic outcomes of Goodness with a capital G; i.e. if you do a lot of good deeds in this life, you will reincarnate as someone more attractive. On the other hand, being ugly is a punishment for past evil deeds.
The Buddha himself was described as being exceedingly handsome, with women practically throwing themselves at him even when he was the celibate leader of an ascetic religious movement.
An ugly woman as a Buddhist leader would only lead to doubt among the true faithful - because an ugly woman is ugly because she is carrying a lot of bad karmic debt. A person loaded with that much bad karma is not fit to be a pure, holy religious leader in a messianic-Buddhist sect like Tibetan Buddhism.
Really, if western media criticize the Dalai Lama's stance on this, they are attacking Buddhist culture and people's religious beliefs. That's rather intolerant.
(How I know all this: I was heavily into Buddhism once, and to an extent I still am. That said, I've always leaned towards Theravada Buddhism (especially the Thailand forest schools), so if I've misunderstood anything regarding Tibetan Buddhism and you can point it out, please do so.)

As someone who was raised Buddhist (Theravada though), this thread makes me proud.
I should also note that Buddhism (Theravada at least) isn't as new-agey/equality-pushing as some Westerners think. Women are generally regarded as "less developed" than men, must be good to reincarnate as a man to get closer to reaching nirvana, aren't allowed into the holiest parts of certain temples, etc. Don't get it twisted though, it's not like in Islam, where at least a hijab seems required in public.
I can't speak for the Dalai Lama, but I agree with previous posters - when he said "attractive," he likely meant it in the way that external attractiveness reflects internal attractiveness (i.e., if one has the mindset to exercise, and thus exercises, that attractive mindset will be reflected in an attractive body).
I should also note that it's sad/silly/stupid that Christianity would likely get attacked for having similar beliefs (I can't say if it does), while Buddhism likely wouldn't (at least in the West).

Pope: Let's praise a man banging another man, to make Catholicism better.
Dalai Lama: Let's show men a smoking minx, to make Buddhism better.
Who's the better religion?

The Dalai Lama is a globalist stooge, but he is certainly right on the female front - when not pretty, then there is little use for them.
I guess his holiness didn't get the feminist PC update.
