Santiago (& Sosua) Dominican Republic Trip Report

Santiago (& Sosua) Dominican Republic Trip Report

I recently spent some time in the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, Santiago de los Caballeros (or traditionally, de los treinta caballeros, being named for the 30 fighting knights of Santiago). This report is a bit abbreviated in parts, as my stay wasn’t that long (in country for around 8 days between Santiago and the coast - see below), but there some perhaps useful tidbits that may help guys land on their feet and maximize their time a bit better.

As an overview, Santiago is basically in the center of the country - its at least ninety minutes to a beach in any direction. It stands as almost a mid-point on the highway between the capital, Santo Domingo, and Puerta Plata, which is one of the major beach destinations, filled with all inclusive resorts. Santiago is like neither of these cities, having its own quiet and calm character and personality.

Getting There and Around

Santiago has its own small international airport, one with perhaps 8-9 gates total, and flights mostly to the US on Jet Blue and Delta, though there was a flight to Providenciales leaving the day I was departing as well. Direct flights are available to Miami, New York and other destinations. I flew in, one way, from Vegas via Miami for 209 - so tickets are available on occasion quite inexpensively.

When you arrive to the airport, as in Santo Domingo, you’ll need to buy the tourist pass before you can be processed at immigration. Its ten dollars - when you come to the area for immigration, bear to your left, buy the pass, and then bounce back in the other direction - passport processing was a rubber stamp - but again, there were dogs in the airport for anyone who cares about that kind of thing. You pass through immigration, the non-existent customs inspection, and you’re outside.

Expect a taxi to cost a flat 20 USD to the center from the Santiago airport (some airports provide transfers as well, give a call and check if you’re staying somewhere decent). One can also fly into Puerto Plata and take a car to Santiago, cost will probably be close to 50USD (haggle on the price). Taxis around town shouldn't exceed 250 pesos for a somewhat longer trip, and 150-200 for a shortish one. If you’re paying more for a ride of less than 10-12 minutes you’re probably being overcharged. You can specify what you’ll pay when you get in - most cabs are sitting around waiting for fares, so its pretty easy to get a legitimate price.

Currency

USD are somewhat widely accepted, and enthusiastically. The Dominican peso was at 45/dollar, and exchanges at 50/dollar were often the case. Bank machines are plentiful in Santiago, though many add a 200 peso fee for withdrawals, so better to take your money out in sizable increments.

Prices

Like in other countries in latin america/caribbean, costs vary depending on what you want. Meals I had varied from a few dollars for rice/beans/salad to 20-30 dollars are finer restaurants. I ate one night at Pez Dorado, which with a glass of wine, and a two course meal was around 30. Decent but I wouldn't go out of your way. Noah, on the other hand, near the Monument, was about the same price and quite good. Worth a visit.

Hotels vary - the leading brand of hotel in the DR is Hodelpa, and they have three hotels in Santiago. I got a good rate for them at their Hodelpa Centro Plaza and Casino at about 75 per night for the first two nights of my trip, but then the rate increased to 150 per night and I moved to the Matum Casino, which is quite close to the monument, and which houses Tabu, a small disco (more later). The Hodelpa was significantly nicer than the Matum, cleaner, better service, both hotels include breakfast. However, with the high dominican tax on hotels, Matum was only round 68 per night. They’ve a pool as well, though not a whole lot of places to sit around it.

I don’t know if the Hodelpa would check ID’s for visitors, but Matum did - even when I listed my friend on the reservation, they still took the ID and held it. No additional charge though, at least doing it that way.

After a night at the Matum, I took my friend and we headed for the coast (more on that below).

Returning to Santiago a few days later, I decided to explore AirBnB as an option and I found one that was quite good. Conquistador joined me from Santo Domingo at this point - I’m not going to post the AirBnb on my thread of pre-screened rentals because: Canada, but if you’re repped/confirmable, I’ll let you know which one it was (can also provide good info for a fair priced driver should you want to hit the coast or just have a local taxi’s number). It wasn't super cheap, around the same price at Matum, but a multi-bedroom with pretty good wifi at a location, a reasonable length walk to both Levels/BT Mall and the Plaza International (as described below), that was near ideal. I’d easily give it four out of five stars, and with a landlord that stayed away but was eager to solve any problems.

Daygame
Having gone in the summer, the Universities were presumably not active. There are two malls, amongst the most significant in Santiago, within two blocks of each other. One is called Plaza International, and the other is Bella Terra. Neither is particularly big, and I’d say that PI is a bit higher end, but not tremendously so. BT has a few outdoor bars on the first floor and the club Levels on the fourth floor (see Nightgame). Going along with the general vibe of Santiago, both places seemed a bit sleepy during the day, and while Conq and his excellent Spanish were helpful, and he did number close a girl at BT, I didn't find daygame at the malls to be that promising. I wasn’t aggressive about it, though, I mostly just walked through the malls to kill time. My spoken spanish is passable at best (I write fairly decently), and that doesn't help for daygame. For what its worth, no approach was met with a blow out - consistent with my experiences in Santo Domingo, the girls are by and large polite, and at least appear interested. The only excuse I proffered is that I was looking to buy a house in PP or Santiago as an investment.

I think daygame in Santiago could be great near the universities and perhaps I’ll run some this fall.

You can see the Bella Terra Mall on this map. Two blocks east on the same road (Pablo Duarte) is the Plaza International. The Monument area is where the pointer is, and the area in tan, directly east of the Monument, is the one of the universities. Hotel Matum is covered by the picture of the Monument in the photo, and Hodelpa Centro Plaza is on Calle Mella to the left side of the map, south of Las Carreras - from one end of the map to the other is about ten minutes by taxi. I would strongly suggest finding a place in the vicinity of the Monument, to its slight north east or south east if possible. Slightly west is OK too, but less optimal.

Girls in Santiago tend to be slimmer and much more fair skinned than their counterparts in Santo Domingo. The picture below is an exaggeration, to a degree, but Id' say the general look of the girl on the right is Santiago, and on the left is Santo Domingo. Im not saying all Santo Domingo girls are heavy ogres, just that Santo Domingo definitely has more curvaceous and darker skinned women. I had several friends from Miami who were from Santiago, and were mixed DR/Lebanese and definitely match with this. You'll definitely see Lebanese looking people around Santiago, and may note their presence in the restaurant business.

Nightgame
This is where Santiago really impressed me. I hit two clubs, one before heading out to the beach and one afterwards. The first was Tabu, which i went to on a Tuesday night. It was quite full, and there were some nice 7-8 level girls, and even one or two that exceeded that. Music volume made it difficult to run any type of game with my poor spoken spanish, but it was clear that there were willing targets. Many unmixed and mixed groups of girls, and unfortunately very little dancing space. Still for a weekday it had a good crowd and Conq and I returned on Friday to a much smaller crowd, disappointingly, which gives the impression that different nights have different prime spots. Again to get to Tabu, walk into Hotel Matum and exit out right of the front desk (or go through the casino attached to the hotel).

The best nightspot I saw in Santiago, far and away, was Levels, on the fourth floor of the BT mall. We had tried to go there on Friday, but the BT mall had a fire in one of its restaurants and the whole mall was shut down for cleaning. By Saturday, Levels had reopened and we were down to give it a shot.

Conquistador winged me - I pulled a milf from LA Cupid and despite her online protestations about only being interested in something serious, after ignoring her for a few days whilst at the beach with another gal (a decent looking Haitian girl living in Santiago), on my return she agreed to join us and to bring a friend. Conquistador joined us as well, and we took a table at Levels (don’t wear a t-shirt, or presumable shorts or trainers, unless u want a hassle at the door).

At Levels, a table with a bottle of rum and all mixers/soft drinks was around 45 all in, and worth it. (I believe I heard Johnny Black would have been about double). The crowd was seventy percent women, many good to very good looking, and decently dressed short dominican dudes (slacks and dress shoes, with button down shirts). I didn't get a sense of really any hookers in the place either, except for one who was on a “date” with an older dude - hot girl who at one point got down on all fours on the floor and danced like a dog - very strange thing to see.

The quality of the crowd almost made me regret inviting the girls, and both Conquistador and I had our necks on swivel full time. I refocused myself on my date though, who wasn't drinking (but did get warmed up by my mediocre merengue skills) and we ended up pulling them both back to the apartment. There are late night pretty good street truck restaurants on major roads, though the pull-back didn't require any subterfuge. I was rather close to closing that night, and ultimately closed the same gal the next night anyway. Hat tip to Conquistador for canceling the taxi on night 1, I wasn't quick enough on the uptick to play that to my advantage, but anyway, it didn't matter. And Ms. Serious was quite, shall we say, pleasant and accommodating on both ends. Thirsty too[Image: angel.gif]

Sosua

During the middle of my week, I had a friend take a bus up from Santo Domingo where she lives. I wanted to check out the north shore. Im not one for all-inclusive resorts, and so Puerto Plata seemed less enticing. I know Sosua is full of bar girls, most of whom are haitian, but I figured that it would be fine going with a date, because (1) we could just ignore that aspect of Sosua, or (2) get one to join us (I worked this angle and it seemed feasible, actually, but never really developed, and also, the bar girls by and large were not attractive at all).

I booked into the PierGiorgio hotel (for two nights) which was on the coast near Sosua beach.

The hotel was comfortable, with a nice clean room, queen bed, very friendly service, a decent swimming pool, the requisite security guard with a shotgun outside, and ran around 75 per night all in, a modest buffet breakfast included.

Beautiful views of the coast from the rooms and from the outdoor restaurant, and a five minute walk to the main road. It was probably about the same length of time to walk to one of the two beaches, which was quite nice as well.

During the daytime, Sosua is sleepy and hot and somewhat quiet. Some tourists wandering around, but at least in August, not a whole lot of people. In certain areas, you’ll get shouted at to rent a moto or change money, but nothing aggressive in my experience and nothing a set of headphones doesn't cure.

Seems like a lot of scuba certification boats around, and I am told the snorkeling is good there as well, but I didn't go. You may be hassled regarding a glass bottom boat tour, which seems to involve squeezing way to many people onto a small boat with an outboard motor. Again, I passed.

At nighttime the main road fills up with dark skinned ladies of the evening, and the sexpats, mostly burned out looking dudes with some younger fit guys mixed in (perhaps there for the ocean sports ?). Police presence is somewhat substantial and keeps the order effectively. No danger/no real hassle experienced. Lots of moto taxis around as well, but we just walked.

We stayed out of the bar girl bars, and ate one night on main street at Sinatras, where they did a great grilled caribbean lobster (probably a pound and a half sized) for around 12 dollars.

Drinks are similarly priced to Santiago (around 2-3 dollars). Also on the main road, the Lazy Dog bar has good wifi and seems a good spot to dawdle and have an iced coffee or a beer. All local staff everywhere we visited was friendly.

I paid my driver, for a private ride in his 2013 Camry, 2500 pesos each way (he came back and picked us up Thursday) from/to Santiago. I’d had the gal call around a few other drivers, and prices varied up to around 3000 for Sosua (2500 for Puerto Plata, which is before Sosua on the main road).

Hi Global Entry, great datasheet!

Is Spanish necessary to game in Santiago? My Spanish is almost 0. Enough to negotiate with taxi drivers and order a drink, but that's it.

Well, again, the universities are closed in August. I'd think the likelihood of finding girls with solid english would increase substantially if you could access Uni girls. The three I've spent the most time with in the DR were not English speakers. The milf was studying but was a beginner.

All that said, I think you can take a page from Linux' book and rely upon the interest of these girls, your natural charisma (or game), and google translate. No doubt it will lessen the pool of available talent to a degree, but I don't think you'll go empty handed. You might have to rely a little more on internet game, thats all. I tend to tell girls via text that my Spanish is poor. Almost always, I get the same response - "No importa," and I believe the majority of them mean it.

You'll probably find English speakers walking around the Pucamaima University campus. Actually everyone fron PCMM whom I've met speaks good English but people seem pretty happy to let you speak Spanish - that is to say that I've not met any English leeches as in other countries/cities. The gate at Pucamaima doesn't seem to require ID - you can just walk in, at least if you look foreign (but not Haitian).

Good info GlobalEntry - thanks for the report.

An English leech may not exist in all countries but it's basically a girl who dates you so as to be able to practice her English. It can even be a guy as someone who hangs out with you to do the same. You can tell that someone is an English leech if they're always asking you to correct them when they speak your language, or if they turn cold when you finally start speaking theirs.

Great report. So are you saying that at Matum, there are no problems bringing girls in, but that they only ask the girl to leave i.d. at the front desk? I'm asking because I've read some conflicting things about Matum, both on the forum and outside of it. If that is correct, I think I'll stay there because it looks like a good deal, the best nightclub is in the hotel, and apartment rental options are scarce in Santiago (compared to Santo Domingo) and many of them are located in ridiculous places and would be a logistical nightmare.

Nice report.

Out of curiosity, how come you chose Sosua and not Cabarete?

From my observations, Cabarete is the more relaxed place out of the two.

When I was in the DR, I split my time between the capital, Santiago, and Cabarete. From what I noticed, SD is the place you go to for girls. Cabarete is the place you go to relax in a down to earth place. Santiago is somewhere in between the two.

Great report Global Entry! Thanks for sharing.

I spent some time in Santiago as well and found Levels to be a fun time. I didn't know bottle service was so cheap there. Wednesday is ladies night at Levels and highly recommended. One of the best clubs I visited in the DR on Wednesdays. I pulled my only Wednesday there.

I found mall day game to be fruitless as well, along with university day game. Every number I pulled from the day time insisted on wanting to start something serious and not being interested in meeting someone passing through as we messaged. However, there is another mall in Santiago that may be worth a shot - Colinas Mall. It's a bit less upper class than the other two, similar to Megacentro in Santo Domingo (although not that ghetto), and worth a shot for day gamers visiting Santiago. Calle del Dol is also consistently packed during the day, although the quality walking around isn't super high.

Lastly, it sounds like your pipeline paid off. If anyone hits Santiago on a short trip, I recommend you pipeline hard as hell and come in with some strong prospects. The girls are a bit more "traditional" here than in the capital.

Oh, and San Fransisco de Marcois is a hidden gem in the DR. I'd never visit as it's said to be quite dangerous. However, the girls are pretty sexy and absolutely love to come visit foreigners in Santo Domingo and Santiago they meet online [Image: wink.gif]

It's always fun to join a fellow RVF member for a few days in a new city. Travelling wouldn't be half as fun without meeting guys from this forum. I remember Lothario telling me that the fastest way to improve your game is to meet other guys and get feedback. Many of us like to game solo but self-diagnosis is virtually impossible.

Anyways, I'll chime in on a few things Global mentioned.

I would say that you are much more likely to get blown out in Santo Domingo than in Santiago. People in the capital are more rushed and wary of strangers. People in Santiago have more of the 'small town friendliness' thing going on.

A sight that would make any feminist sick to her stomach. A guy in his 60's with a super-hot, slim girl who was maybe 19/20. A normal sight here. God bless Latin America.

Haha. 'Mediocre' is doing yourself a disservice. If the music is loud and Spanish is not your first language then dancing is essential. It changed the dynamic of the night for both of us. Divide, escalate and conquer.

If you still haven't banged and she mentions calling a taxi, you have one last chance to salvage the bang - Get the girl to call the taxi using your phone then put your phone on silent and get physical. Either text the driver to cancel or ignore the call when he arrives. There's a slim chance that she will get lost in the moment and forget. Or she will rationalise that the driver forgot.

If she mentions the driver again you're not getting any and you'll have to find her another taxi number. If she finds out about your evil trick you might burn a guaranteed second date bang (which Global got with solid game).

M -
I am saying only that I put her name on the paperwork when I checked in, and they didn't ask for any additional money. I cannot say whether that is because I put her name on the paperwork, I made the reservation (on Hotels.com) for two guests, or because they don't charge for guests. Can't say. But they did let her come up. What I can say is that there's no way with the layout of the hotel to sneak a girl past the front desk unless its for some reason unoccupied. It wasn't at any point I passed it while there.

And to be clear, the best nightclub is levels in Bella Terra. But for a tuesday night Tabu was more than adequate and obviously staying in the hotel would be a positive I'd think, if only not having to deal with a taxi.

I was somewhat focused on Puerta Plata, and then expanded the search because I didn't like what i was seeing re hotels in PP. Its just that Sosua was the next town over, and when I saw the Piergiorgio, and the price, it seemed a good fit. Dantes had told me about Cabarete, and I had it in my mind too....not too much thought went into it, as I had a companion, she was excited about having heard how beautiful Sosua is (and the beach is quite nice), and that was enough.

I agree that, given decent internet, it seems Santiago might be better to live in than to visit for a few days.

I actually didn't really pipeline (meaning in advance). The girl I took to Sosua was one from the last trip, and the milf I connected with after arriving this time. I guess the trip was long enough to allow proper time for the "game to seed."

If any of you are interested in visiting Santiago, let me know,
I'm living here , been here for 3 months and will be here for 3 more,
I think it's a hidden gem, but it's not for everyone.

Benefits:
Higher value than santo domingo
Better logistics
Cheaper
Hotter women IMHO, lighter-skinned and more diversity, and you will run into 7's and 8's that aren't total golddiggers
*this is big too, The Spanish is way clearer in Santiago. think Spanish like in Colombia. I struggled in Santo Domingo at times and I'm fluent.

That being said, it is a considerably smaller city so less day game opportunities,

My favorite places to Day game have been the Centro, literally on the street, near La Sirena. I had 3 bangs from day game near La Sirena and McDonalds including a solid 8 who was 18, and another pretty girl who was a virgin. There are great night game opportunities too, although i have little experience there. I do Not recommend day gaming at the Malls, they're never crowded, and it's mainly girls on dates or mixed sets. The girls feel weird being talked to there as well. I should also mention that I never had much success hitting on girls in grocery stores or stores in Santiago although I know others have had success. When I was in Santo domingo, it was very different, I would get several numbers every time I strolled out to Sambil from girls at the candy or perfume carts. I've come to realize that girls here have a little bit of that Philippines-esque fear of being seen in public with a gringo. It's a smaller city, they are likely to run into people they know, and a lot of girls have noviazgos (boyfriend/friend relations) from their childhood that they'll end up marrying. Long story short, get a girl to your apartment on a 2nd date (it is a bit more conservative here), and you're as good as gold. Don't expect to see them again after the bang though, no matter how much they talk about having a relationship with you, they just want the experience, unless you're spending money on them they really have no interest in a relationship.

I am going to concentrate my efforts on the universities and gyms over the next few months just cuz I think there are way hotter girls there, and way higher quality. if you want to join a yoga class in this city, you would clean up . Unfortunately I can't even tough my toes LOL.

If anyone wants to visit and needs help with logistics, apartments , etc. PM me, always down to day or night game, or wing.

Is the city worth visiting for a person who does not speak any Spanish?

Off the bat I would say, unfortunately No.

But have you traveled to and gamed and/or dated girls in a predominantly Spanish-speaking country before? If so, and you've developed some techniques to get around Speaking spanish then you should be good to go.

when I landed in Colombia 3 years ago the 1st 2 girls I banged , I did so on the 1st date with little Spanish but I took them out, we had drinks and went dancing, I had no idea I would end up banging them that night, it was just having a good time and rolling with it. So if you play that game, of course you can bang girls without Spanish.

Also, in colombia, over time I developed a simple phone game in which, on a date, I would show a lot of pictures with my friends and family and a lot of funny pictures, a lot of sarcasm and use a throwback technique the way stand-up comedians do. That game became my key to building attraction on the date with a lack of Spanish and to this day helps me break down barriers on almost every date in foreign countries

I have my eyes on both DR and Colombia, with a preference for DR because it's safer than Colombia, at least at this time.

But it seems Colombia (at least Bogota) would be easier for someone who doesn't speak much Spanish.

I'll do both, but I'm weighing which one to do first. My Spanish reading level is intermediate to advanced, but put me on a street with a Spanish speaking woman, and I'll be tongue tied.

Hey CleanSlate,

let me be honest with you, put anyone on a street with spanish speaking woman, myself as well, and we'll all be a bit tongue-tied,
i'm intermediate/advanced but I still have to memorize and use basic phrases that explain that you're lost, you just moved here, you don't know many people, maybe we can get to know each other... don't be afraid, just write them out and memorize and you'll be fine,
you'll kick yourself if you don't , cuz the day game opportunities are very nice sometimes,

also I wouldn't consider either country unsafe, I've spent nearly a year in each, reports are way way overblown, Bogota around Zona Rosa is an area with a lot of people and a lot of money , there are 4 parts of the main centro commercial with Gucci and Prada stores and expensive restaurants, In Santiago where i'm at, on my street almost every car is new with many Range Rovers and Porsches, the unsafe reports you get are from cities like Pereira or Barranquilla and are all from the suburbs where there are no streetlights or police and there is more poverty, you just don't run into that stuff in the major cities or in the centers

re: your Spanish, if you are struggling with spanish, Colombia, especially Bogota will be the place to be, But if you go to Medellin or Barranquilla you will struggle so stick to Bogota at first. And as much as I'd like to see you in the DR, take Santo Domingo off your list if you don't speak basic Spanish and you want to day or night game. It is absolutely the toughest spanish accent to understand that i've ever encountered and no one will slow down to help you. Personally I would recommend Santiago, the 2nd biggest city, the Spanish is way cleaner, much more like Colombia, I was so relieved when i got to Santiago after 2 months in Santo Domingo and could start understanding people , my notch count Tripled in Santiago vs. Santo Domingo and a huge factor was my Spanish.

Thanks fvitterbi, very informative post, and good tip on learning the basic conversational phrases. I'll remember to hit you up when I'm in Santiago sometime in the first half of 2016.

Santiago (& Sosua) Dominican Republic Trip Report

This is the exact reason I joined this website. It was to look at these valuable datasheets.

I went to Sosua last week with some of my friends. It's crazy that the entire city was filled with "working" women. Cannot lie, the chicks were extremely cheap. 30 USD for anything you want. There was a club we went to out there called La Rumba and there were girls just walking around the entire club and almost all were prostitutes. Next time if I ever go I'm going to venture out to more clubs and bars and also work on my Spanish.

Me, however, I was more interested in the scenery and how cheap everything else was. There are no tourist season there so food, jet skiing, site seeing, and everything else is just so cheap. If your an economical person like me and want to get the most bang for your buck I would recommend this place. If I would have went to Santo Domingo or Punta Cana then the prices for everything would probably be doubled.

My boys want to go back in October and I may just go with them as I'm starting to travel more. Anyone else been here lately?

Punta Cana and Sosua are ok if all you want to do is enjoy the beach and do some water sports. But if you want to meet girls, go to either Santo Domingo or Santiago.

Gaming girls in Sosua is bush league.

Went back again in October. I'm kind of over the whole "working" girl thing. Literally every girl in Sosua is selling and it was pretty much the same thing in Santiago. Defeats the entire person of game and a challenge.

All girls are eyeing the gringos because they believe they have money and little kids and people begging for change.

Will definitely check out some other countries before going back.

Wait a second - Sosua, ok, maybe. But are you saying that every girl you encountered in Santiago was a working girl, or only wanted to interact with you for your money/perceived wealth? If so, you and I had vastly different experiences in Santiago (I brought a gal to Sosua, so I wasn't on the hunt there).

Can you tell us a bit more about yourself - your looks, style, approach. I'm frankly surprised to hear someone report this back about Santiago, which by most accounts is a significantly more conservative city than Santo Domingo.

I've referral links for most credit cards, PM me for them & thanks if you use them
Strip away judeo-christian ethics ingraining sex is dirty/bad & the idea we're taking advantage of these girls disintegrates. Once you've lost that ethical quandary (which it isn't outside religion) then they've no reason to play the victim, you've no reason to feel the rogue. The interaction is to their benefit.

Santiago (& Sosua) Dominican Republic Trip Report

I actually was in Santiago for one day and the only thing that I really did was go to some club on a Monday night. I got a little section for around 80 US$ and enjoyed myself. Seen some girls and brought them to my section. After a couple minutes of talking and chopping it up with the ladies they were telling me how much for "freaky freaky".

Looks- 26 year old attractive african american
Style- dress sharp, fitted t shirts, slim jeans, nice loafers/high end sneakers
Approach- I'm more direct, I start out with whats your name and then go from there.

In Sosua the girls are like cockroaches. Every girl wants to get with the gringo and sell pussy. So annoying that I started telling these girls I was married.
