Oldies Jams Thread (post your favorites and enjoy the music)

I can't get with the bullshit that's being produced nowadays. Back in the late '90's when the Backstreet Boys were coming out, I thought that music and culture were at their lowest points. Little did I know how bad things were gonna get. Dudes like Drake make the Backstreet Boys look like the Geto Boys.

Now I'm a singer of traditional Irish rebel songs, so I'm already a little predisposed towards old fashioned music. I don't want this thread to be about that. I want this thread to be a place for people to share their favorite oldies- Motown, doo-wop, funk, rock. All the good music that you can just kick back to, blaze to, swoop a fine girl to. Trust me, it will make a much better impression on a girl if you're bumpin some uniques, genuine music, than if you're bumpin the same top 40 watered down, tampon-up-the-ass R&B shit that every other chump that tries to get with her in his striped Polo button-down and Axe body spray plays to her.

There was just a girl at my place and I was playing some of these oldies to her. I had a playlist which transferred from my computer to the stereo and she couldn't stop talking about how she'd never heard such amazing, sexual music.

Here's a classic R&B song from Al Green. How the fuck did we go from this, to little bitches like Chris Brown, or Dr(f)ake?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZlbajbDRWA

Here's one from Curtis Mayfield, my all-time favorite Soul musician. check out the Superfly soundtrack. It's all 100% A #1:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9tJc27IWKw

The original dirty rap on wax, way back in 1980 "One-two... I said ah .. fuck you... three four.. ya mammy's a whore.... five six... check out this dick..."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IC7fZr7l_...re=related

If you're doing it right and you're playing this song- and your girl doesn't get wet- get the fuck out because she's a fuckin reptile!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVrHWtsrx8c

Here's a real oldie, a good laid back jam from a long forgotten group:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agUFX-c8uU8

A true legend, an Italian-American prodigy from The Bronx:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUh44qUOn6w

Anyway, I plan on posting a lot more of these great oldies, but that's just a starter. I've taken young girl back, who never knew anything other than your 2000's generic chick-hop, and had them fall in love with this music. Also, they take in these sounds that are around them and associate them with you. Since there are probably not many other people under 40 playing this type of music, they'll associate these unique and beautiful sounds with their experience with you. Music is very important to girls.

Anyway, if you're into oldie jams, any genre, from hip-hop to doo-wop, please post some of your favorites here. Any of the old classics that you'd be hard pressed to find nowadays, could be from the '40's, right up to the 1980's. Hopefully there are some other fans out there, and this thread could become a kind of data base for classic oldie songs.

I play oldies all the time when I have girls over, cooking, etc. I'm young, but it amazes me when I meet girls who have no sense of music pre-1980s.

Great tracks.

You are right, that is exactly when music took a header. The late 90's.

The pendulum has yet to swing back to dope. It has been a long time.

I wrote this a while back:

I agree with this 1000%. Music has gone into the shitter big-time, across the board. In fact, creativity in general is on a serious decline. Just look at the movies that are out on a given week (many of which are shitty remakes of old movies) or the NY Times best-seller list. It's a sad state of affairs.

You can scrounge around and find some good art, of whatever genre, but that's exactly the point: you have to search, and the pickings are slim.

That said, I don't know if you were looking for good old-school music (early 90s) or good oldies (60s, 70s). I like both periods and their music comprise 80 percent of what I listen to. I could fill up this forum with jams, but I'll just drop a couple of random samples.

Let's set the mood for winding back the clock with a bittersweet, reminiscing classic from 1994, with bomb, incisive lyrics--especially if you came up in certain parts of the country, during a certain of range of years (set to the track of a towering soul classic, by Teddy Pendergrass):

Nothing like a little James Taylor:

Going back further. The Animals:

More to come.

Great thread. I can't get into much of the hip hop R&B bullshit out there on mainstream radio either. I love the golden era of motown and classic soul as well. Keep in mind though that there are modern artists out there keeping that vibe of the old school alive. Like Raphael Saadiq:

Great tracks from many different genres... I've been sitting here on my laptop at work all day listening to these.

"I wrote this a while back:

It's good to see that there are other people out there who can see through this bullshit. I love what you said about Drake. I'm from Canada and I know Toronto. He's from Forest Hills, one of the richest neighbourhoods in the whole city. If you live there, you're loaded. Not upper middle class, flat-out rich. I get a kick out of it when he tries to talk street, and act like he has 'swagger'. It comes across as being awkward as hell, like he's still not that comfortable in his own skin. The thing is, it seems that most people don't see it, but it seems so obvious to me. Shit, he acts like he wants to suck Lil Wayne's dick.

I pick on him because to me, he's a symbol of what the music industry's become, and our whole culture for that matter.... a bunch of people playing roles that they're really not suited for.

Anyway, I can't believe that I left this song out of the OP:

Drake sounds good on auto tune. Garbage live. At the grammys with lil Wayne and eminem he looked scared and out of place.

Can go on with old skill artists

Completely random but they don't make songs like:

Jam on it -nucleus
Friends-whodini.

Haha of course Drake sounds stupid when he tries to act hard- He was on Degrassi! I don't mind his introspective rap, and I think he's ok when he sings some hooks though...

You can't have an oldies thread without one of the greatest samples of all time; Today by Tom Scott.

If you guys like samples you should check out a documentary called Copyright Criminals. You should be able to find a torrent of it online. Its pretty interesting and features an original score by The Beastie Boys.

Talking of sampling some of my all time favourite albums are the Shaolin Soul records featuring the classic jams sampled by the Wu Tang on some of their hits.

NICE! Big Wu fan myself. RZA is one of my favourite producers. Unlike a lot of rappers and producers -cough KANYE- he still seems really grounded and modest in interviews.

I like Van Morrison and Rolling Stones a lot. Those are some great musicians. I'm on my phone so it would take a while to put up youtube videos of some of my favorite older groups. Kc and the sunshine band! I don't care what anyone says, I'll bump the shit out of some disco.

You know what?

Drake's done very well for himself- he's got money, fame and access to damn near any woman he wants. He should absolutely keep doing what he's doing because it works for him.

That being said, the shit that he cranks out is, to me, garbage. Hip hop's gone from being what it was, to just more pandering to the impressionable young bitches. Whatever though, he's doing his thing and he's profiting greatly from it, so I won't sit on the sidelines and condemn the man.

I don't give a shit either, some of that disco was some quality music.

It's a hot, muggy day here in Busan, South Korea.

Here's what I'm listening to right at the moment:
