It's interesting that Therzon's presence also sunk the movie of Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road' - a story focused on a father and son surviving after an unspecified apocalyptic event and him doing everything he could to keep his son alive: a specifically male story of survival.
Hollywood couldn't let it go out without an unnecessary major female role being shoved into the thing and her presence weakened the immediacy of the material. She was a big fan of the book, so, being a woman, had to make sure a large part of it was all about HER and HER feelings 'if she was in that situation'. As such, the father / son aspect is played down, and the intensity disperses.
The problem is that Hollywood usually aims for the Four Quadrants to make more $$$. So we end up with Shit like this.
The best series and movies IMO are usually male dominated and women play roles as insignificant as possible: True Detective, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad (Skyler is a pain in the Ass though), Fight Club etc.
