I'm considering trying to become conversational in Thai before I leave here. I consider 3 months the perfect amount of time to do such a thing and I think being isolated in the outskirts of On Nut, living with a bunch of muay thai fighers, is the perfect place to do that. If I can pick up Thai, then that'll be six languages under my belt. Holla.
Since Thais are mostly a xenophobic and largely ignorant nation, be careful learning Thai from Isaan born/raised Thais. They have a bit of a dialect that immediately screams association with poor uneducated Thais. For biz connections it would be a definitive disadvantage, you would most likely be labeled a whore monger (most low end hookers come from Isaan). On higher end biz level, polite, educated Thai skills are a requirement.

Honestly, if you want to do a big SE Asian city, I'd do Kuala Lumpur. It's cleaner, more modern, less shady (not prostitutes running around everywhere), but still has good night life. Has foreigners, and the difference between the upper and lower classes isn't so big. It's a bit more expensive though.
You forget to mention it's pretty boring. KL just doesn't compare to BKK, there's nothing to do or see, the night life isn't great, girls aren't even allowed into clubs until their 24 or something stupid where as guys can go in younger. It's OK for a day or two but there's not much to keep you interested, IME.
Agree, KL did nothing for me also, that city has no character. Bangkok seems to have this 'anything can happen' aura. Not in a dangerous way, but more in adventurous way.
