YMG does Thailand Part II

I'm already considering leaving Bangkok early and going to Phuket.

This has less to do with Bangkok specifically and more to do with the fact that, since I'll be living in a giant polluted Asian mega-metropolis for the next 3 years or so, I want to spend this time doing muay thai in an open air gym on the beach.

Been there less than 24hrs haven't you? I reckon you give it more time, it's big and it's polluted but it's also incredible.

Currently kicking it in Bangkok..posted up at Sukhumvit/Asoke. Been here a week and its been overall a good time but it doesn't have the magic of Hong Kong that I love. It's basically just a more developed Ho Chi Minh City.

Hitting up Yangon, Myanmar on Wednesday. Then I'm thinking either Phuket or Kuala Lumpur for a couple days but I'll probably get lazy and just stick with BKK.

I traveled up and down the BTS line all day - Sukhumvit, Asoke, Nana, Phrom pong, Ploen Chit.

It's pretty fuckin balmy here, I"m still trying to get used to the heat.

The food is good of course, as it's Thailand. I'm having a harder time finding Thai food in my neighborhood than Italian, Japanese, and Chinese. The waitresses at the Chinese restaurant spoke Mandarin so I was able to have a lively banter with them, but they were all pretty butt ass ugly.

I've seen maybe four girls in Bangkok that I thought were attractive enough to bang. I must be looking in the wrong spots or something.

Bangkok still continues to not impress me. My expectations may have been too high for this city.

It really doesn't matter though, as my priorities are not tourism and fun but business and fitness. All the other things can wait as rewards for meeting or exceeding my commitments and goals in entrepreneurship and body composition improvement.

Unfortunately I've committed to attend some events which I now sort of regret. It's getting harder to justify not wanting to leave this city.

I am a patient person, though, and I will give Bangkok a chance.

In my one and half months here I have come to the conclusion that BKK can be fun for only two kinds of guys:

1. Someone who is willing to spend $2,000-4,000 a month and is really into oriental girls, or

2. The sex tourist who only wants to fuck prostitutes and does not give a rat's ass about anything else.

I too have seen only a handful of Thai girls that I would really go out my way to fuck and I have been to almost all the major spots in the city. Maybe the hot Thai girls come out at night and one ought to go the nightclubs to spot them.

Hong Kong is dull in comparison and HCMC is a chaotic shit hole without the charm or excitement that BKK offers, IMO.

It's Thailand, it's hot. You must have known that..

You are either looking in the wrong spots, you don't like Asian girls or your standards are too high.

You've only been there a couple days and you're already making assumptions about whether you like it or not, give it a chance. Sure it seems far too warm, busy, polluted and noisy at first but it'll grow on you, it grows on everybody. Magical city.

You clearly aren't that patient, you were complaining after just 24hrs, you've now been there a few days and are considering leaving, it seems you want everything to happen and be perfect NOW and aren't giving anything a chance. Chill out and enjoy, you're probably still jetlagged.

I've yet to meet anyone, male or female, who didn't think BKK was great. Most people didn't like it to begin with but quickly grew to love it. Was the same with me, hated it first visit and didn't give it a chance but loved it the second time round and now rate it as one of the best cities in the world. I don't spend nearly as much money as you mention nor do I ever travel solely in the hope I have sex with a local girl or to frequent whores. Most people on here would surely be described as sex tourists though, everyone seems to travel solely to have sex with locals and isn't bothered about much else....

You are twisting my words. I never said that I don't like BKK. I have been coming to this city since I was 8 years old. My entire family thinks of this place as their second home.

Different strokes for different folks. My idea of fun is definitely different than yours. And for me a sex tourist is someone who travels solely for the purpose of having sex with prostitutes. Going to a country to pick up high class local women in something different, its a new breed and we cannot call ourselves 'sex tourists'.

You have used a condescending tone of voice against YMG and started a pissing contest with me on another thread and NOT ONCE have you given a proper recommendation. If someone tells me that I am looking in the wrong places then I expect him to point me in the right direction and tell me where I can find the things that I am looking for. Now, I would gladly hear any real suggestions that you might have, if you don't have any then I would ask you to not turn this into another flame war.

Each to his own I guess. I really love Bangkok, but I've been about 22 times over the last 16 years. I agree that it is hard to find stunners in Bangkok, but the sheer amount of people means you'll find them a lot faster.

I'm not one for Phuket. Too overcommercialised, filled with sex tourists. I'll go somewhere a bit more quiet.

Phuket is fairly well known as a seedy sex tourist destination hence the nickname fuckit so that might not be the place for you either.

I've heard good things about Chang Mai which may be more your scene, I believe it has some good martial arts schools and it's supposed to be a little more laid back than Bangkok.

I haven't been to either of these places so maybe others who've been can comment.

I have lived down in the south in Railey beach for a couple of months which really was a paradise, golden beaches, amazing food, scenery and climbing, also chock full of sexy scandi chicks. I've heard that it's not quite the same any more, a lot of it was wiped out with the tsunami and a many of the new resorts are much more upscale so it's not so great for the long term traveller any more.

Chiang Mai is cool, but it feels like a little town.

Hey YMG. We both did Muay Thai at Rawai, and I say go Phuket all the way. I spent a week in BKK after my time in Phuket and didn't like it. It's a large dirty city, and unless you're into the high-end club scene and spending some money, there doesn't seem to be anything there that you can't get elsewhere in the country for much cheaper.

A lot of people who don't know Phuket think it's all like Patong, usually just because that's where they stay when they go backpacking there. When really that's the only seedy area on the island. For what it's worth YMG, I was insanely productive the month I was at Rawai. I'd work out in the morning, eat, take a nap, and then get a shitload of work done all day. There are so few distractions out there and it's such a relaxed area, it was very, very easy to get work done.

Either way, I miss Rawai and plan on going back this year. This time for maybe 2-3 months. Partly to get in insane shape. Partly to get a ton of work done. Partly to save a bunch of money. And partly because I really loved it there.

How long are you going to be out there?

hmmm...if I had to spend time in a big asian city id prefer Phnom Penh to BKK...I really liked that town it was dirty and insane, but really interesting with lots of cool bars and clubs. I like the Kymer look on women too I think the're cute. Cambodians are much more open people generally and are more of a laugh.

I'd be inclined to check out muay thai places in Krabi (such as Rilay or Koh Lanta) which are both really beautiful and will have boxing camps. Lanta is a hell of an island.

For scandi chicks look no further than Koh Phi Phi, which is an hours ferry from Phuket. Scandanavian teenie boppers getting loaded on buckets and falling around on the beach. It used to be a really beautiful place, thats kinda ruined now by the development and all the beach bars, but its still a great place to chase women.

In phuket itself, I like Kata beach down the south, sometimes you can surf there. But the whole island is full of nasty old western men there to pick up hookers. Phuket town is actually quite cool, a real thai town, less touristy. Theres some cool local discos where if you have some basic thai and english you can pick up local women. There is also an amazing market in phuket town where you can get great seafood.

Awesome - yeah I am going to be in Thailand for 3-4 months probably...I'm sort of having a dilemma about this situation in that:

-I want to give BKK a shot but my gut is telling me that this is not where I wanna be

-My gut is literally telling me to get my ass to Phuket and start shedding fat

-Part of me knows that I will not be able to return to this region for a long time, so I want to travel - but I know I need to focus on business right now

I'm going to be in BKK for at least one more week. I'm moving from Thonglor to Silom so that I can train here:

http://www.fightspiritgym.com

When I go back to Phuket, I'm going to be going to Patong Boxing Gym and not Rawai. Did you stay at Rawai Guest House? I should have stayed there but did Darin Bungalows instead. Rawai Guest House is worth the dough, though.

Check this camp out:

http://thailandmuaythaigym.com/

That one on one training looks sick. It's close to the convenience of Patong yet still far enough to feel remote.

When were you thinking of going?

I did stay in the guesthouse and was very happy with it. I would definitely stay there again. I was thinking of heading out there August at the earliest, but more likely Sept/Oct. I definitely want to check out the Koh islands and Chang Mai as well.

Bangkok, I don't think you're missing out. Like I said, I spent a week there, and I have some friends who have lived there, and from what I've heard, if you settle in and make the connections, it can be a cool place, but just doesn't seem worth it to me. Honestly, if you want to do a big SE Asian city, I'd do Kuala Lumpur. It's cleaner, more modern, less shady (not prostitutes running around everywhere), but still has good night life. Has foreigners, and the difference between the upper and lower classes isn't so big. It's a bit more expensive though.

Phnom Penh is great to visit but I would not stay there. Cambodia in general is a very interesting place to visit and the touristy stuff is worth doing. But the cities themselves are still pretty run down and chaotic. Place is SUPER CHEAP though. Like you can get a room for $7 a night or something ridiculous. Meals for $1. But again, I wouldn't ever stay there for more than 3-4 days. Too run down. The locals aren't as friendly as the Thais and finding good internet there was more or less impossible.

Oh, internet is a total dealbreaker. That's unfortunate.

Try to come through earlier! Let's get a Phuket muay thai entrepreneurship mastermind thing going.

You forget to mention it's pretty boring. KL just doesn't compare to BKK, there's nothing to do or see, the night life isn't great, girls aren't even allowed into clubs until their 24 or something stupid where as guys can go in younger. It's OK for a day or two but there's not much to keep you interested, IME.

You are going to leave BKK for Phuket? ha. I thought that Phuket completely sucked balls. Completely over rated in every aspect.
I didn't spend enough time in BKK, but you should check out the Siam Square area during the day. I saw a good amount of HOT Thai girls when I was in that area. I hear the good nightlife is around that area too.. but i didn't go out in BKK for some reason. Siam Square is basically the center of the city..

HCMC has a good night life. THe girls are hot and there are lots of cool people. DOn't even waste your time with day game in HCMC. It's too fucking hot out and its rare to spot any hot girls (believe me.. I walked around ALOT and hit up most of the downtown areas).. Make sure to stay around district 1 if u go to HCMC, that's where the good clubs are.

I completely agree, I have said this before, the best area in BKK is between the Siam and Chitlom stations. As you said its the center of the city. When that entire red shirt - blue(?) shirt saga happened the chitlom station road was where it all took place. Whenever they have some kind of a demonstration this is where they do it. Thonglor on the other hand is the for a businessman who is interested in entertaining clients and attending meetings.
