Better Call Saul Season 1

I don't get the disappointment. That season finale sets up perfectly for a 2nd season of sleazy lawyering.

The only thing that made Jimmy fly right in Albuquerque and not go back to being "Slippin' Jimmy" was his brother. Chuck saved Jimmy after his "Chicago Sunroof," and Jimmy constantly sought Chuck's approval by trying to play his game.

After Jimmy learned of Chuck's betrayal and that Chuck would never approve of him as a lawyer, he took up his old tricks. And those tricks were a hell of a lot more fun than dealing with old people. So he turned down that firm's offer because he'd rather play his own game, and not Chuck's. At the end of the episode, he's abandoned his scruples to become "Slippin' Jimmy" again, this time with a law degree.

Expect some good schemes to come season two.

More than Mike being flawless to me it came across that the other 2 guys were not that competent. These 3 were recommended as bodyguards by that vet who helped Mike. I really doubt that the vet knows polished criminals. Mike on the other hand was a dirty cop and extremely polished with these things.

This is what I'm feeling. Jimmy/Saul is going to have the chance for a big trnsformation as the season goes on. Jimmy has Agency.

Mike though is an instrument. His limits are known and proscribed already to a large part. Jimmy gets to go from pretender who dresses like Matlock to do wills at $140 a pop to a chemical consligliere. Mike on the other hand is already an ossified corrupt east coast cop whose movement is merely going to be from working for chumps to working for champs.

If they pulls this off well, it will be a nice contrast between the leads. If they fail, it is going to be on their having already set Mike up to play the plot in God mode. Mike's character is of an age where changing his circumstances could be credible, but changing his being isn't. On the other hand I expect Jimmy/Saul to flirt with the good/evil line quite a bit until the series matches up to Breaking Bad Season 2.

I just watched the last two episodes, and this is maybe my favorite season of television ever. It built up the backstory of these two characters flawlessly and I was gripped by every character. Hell, I even choked up in the last episode and it took Breaking Bad until the last season to have that effect on me. Granted, this show is building on that show, but the extreme competence of the creative team is stunning. We truly are in a golden age of television and I am glad to be consuming this, as opposed to The Big Bang Theory or similar nonsense.

Also that Kevin Costner reference was absolute genius. I love this show and can't wait for the next season.

I completely agree with this. I mean, the giant guy just ran away despite being a full head taller than Mike. The guy who was talking shit was a complete moron who was clearly compensating for his insecurities. Mike was calm and professional and ended up saving the deal.

Bump for Season 2 starting tomorrow. I've been long waiting for this. Season 1 was very good but had to build up a story first. I expect Season 2 to be even better, now that everything has been set.

Happy it's back, but S02E01 was far too slow for my taste. Anything that centers on Odenkirk-Seehorn (Kim Wexler) is quite boring and lame. She's a post-wall actress who just doesn't have that much talent. I don't see a lot of chemistry in the duo and feel like Odenkirk carries the load the majority of the time . . .

I hope Seehorn moves out of the picture quickly and we get a lot more Odenkirk-Banks and other Breaking Bad characters.

I agree with above poster but I think they're setting Saul up for a heartbreak that will make him even more cynical.

It felt like there were a million commercials last night, making it hard to follow.

I did enjoy the bar gambit though haha--kind of felt bad for the guy...

Indeed. He will most likely alienate her as he transitions from McGill to Goodman. I think the season trailers hinted at that as it showed him doing things such as fabricating evidence.

On a side note, I've always found Gilligan's portrayal of female characters quite interesting. In Breaking Bad, it was so easy to hate Skyler. But the character helped to develop Walter and make his choice between crime and family seem all the more real. Likewise, Marie, despite being clearly unhinged, was good link between Walter, Hank, and the DEA.

I suspect that part of the reason I find Wexler so hard to watch is that she is an uncanny representation of the career spinster in her 40s. Nothing about her is interesting and her work is utterly void and boring. Perhaps Seehorn isn't terrible if you evaluate her in terms of the role she's supposed to play.

At any rate, can't wait for Goodman to find better fish to fry.

Ken scene was the highlight.

Metaphors aplenty in the dumpster scene too.

Squat Cobbler was the high light of the episode. I can't wait to see what urbandictionary define it.

Just so we're clear it involves sitting in pies while fully clothed?

I just want to punch the nerdy drug embezzler. How retarded can a guy be?

The Squat Cobbler part was hysterical.

I couldn´t stop laughing during the whole part. I hope we see more stuff like that and less spinster Wexler. She´s terrible and sucks the life out of the Saul and the show.

Hopefully this show runs for a few seasons, it certainly has the potential.

The perfect finale would be Cranston reprising his role from BB and tying it all together, similar to what "Newhart" did with "The Bob Newhart Show".

It's funny how much blonde alpha lawyer is so much the good guy now that Saul's brother has been revealed to be the true villain.

The guitar scene seemed to be about Saul's ennui towards something he's truly good at.

Kim is getting the Skyler treatment. Already seeing the mouth breathers at the tv forums want Jimmy to go full Saul at this point.

As for the Mike sub plot, seems like the whole point of it was to introduce the big bad, Tuco.

Enjoying the show thus far, however I expected it to take up a little more pace now in season 2. In episode 5 especially they're now really stretching it. Let's hope it leads up to a little more tension soon. That last episode wasn't very entertaining to watch.

Kim clearly demonstrates to Jimmy that her career, despite its advancement is more important than a relationship with him. It will be interesting to see whether she continues this and breaks up with him or if Jimmy sees the light and ditches her together with his attempt at a mainstream career. I have a feeling that it will take Kim breaking up with Jimmy in order for him to completely depart with his mainstream career and embrace his skills as a criminal.

Yeah episode 5 was boring as hell. Unfortunately the show isn't moving at the pace I hope it would. Super building up of Jimmy's lawyer career and not yet to the Saul zone. Once in the Saul zone it should be great, it is just taking forever to get there.

Edit: Watching the video Requiem posted above it shows Jimmy getting arrested. Did I miss this scene and it already happened or is this something to look forward to?

Kim is the quintessential "career woman." She only cares about her job at the end of the day and everything is dedicated towards advancement. Jimmy is and always will be a sideshow to her. Everything she's been taught is about her fulfilling her own goals and desires, not others or (heaven forbid) even thinking of fulfilling her biological imperative. She's also probably been coddled as one of the few attractive women in the field of law but as the years go on she's only now beginning to understand how it quickly fades away (except in the US where I guess it could go on even well into her 40s, such is the lack of thin, moderately attractive women).

This kind of careerism is especially prevalent in law firms where only a very select few eventually end up on the partnership track and most associates have to exit the firm after 7-8 years if they are not up for promotion.

At this point Kim is pretty much a man in a woman's body as she exhibits zero maternal qualities and seemingly has no plans to ever settle down and have children, even as the biological clock is almost out of time.

Agree with everyone that the 5th episode was pretty damn slow hope it picks up a bit (am sure it will).

This season so far is kinda slow, cool to see some Breaking Bad characters though. I think we will probably see Gustavo in the future. The best scenes of course are with Mike.

I really like the show albeit it does suffer with pace issues .Jonathan Bank's acting as Mike is almost perfect and Bob Odenkirk is brilliant too.

I have a good friend who unfortunately is also a Liberal-Feminist. He watches this show and loves it. So,sometimes I fuck around with his feminist thinking .

What I do is that with the shows he really likes a lot, such as this one, I start mentioning how anti feminist the shows are. For this show I mention how Gilligan (show's creator) is a misogynist by making the main females to be bitches in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul . I tell him that they are portrayed in a negative light and are ultimately shown as unsupportive to the main male lead during the time the male lead needed them the most. I further mention that the supporting female cast in both shows has been either shown as villains or taking advantage of their male relations.

By the way ,all this is true. The two main female characters(Skylar and Kim) are shown as these independent, assertive and career types .This is in a way meant to be a 'strong ,modern woman' portrayal of the love interest characters. Only thing is that it also makes the characters look absolutely negative and bitchy.

I, ofcourse ,do not mention the last paragraph to my friend and its hilarious to see his feminist view break to shreds and him trying to back these characters up.I just keep saying to him that its a shame that such great shows have so much misogyny in them and he loses it.

Also , next time he gets to remark on any other show or movie as not being feminist or it being prejudiced against women , Ill just tell him that he has no right to say that as his best shows are highly misogynist/anti feminist which in turn makes him a misogynist.
