That is very different from the Titanic - when the deck is melting and you risk carbon monoxide poisoning - it is a different situation altogether. Though it is strange that it took them so long to organize boats that close to Corfu. Local fisherman would be much faster than those helicopters.

With the tragedy of the Costa Concordia a couple of years ago there were also several articles about how "chivalry was dead" and how, in the chaos, men refused to put women and children first, and instead pushed themselves forward to escape:

Women and children first in situations where there is no real apparent danger, yes men would behave for the most part. The herd would keep the lemmings in check.

However this was different and so was the Concordia and any other large vessel that was hit with catastrophe and urgency with life and death staring you in the face.

- Large swells
- Ship on fire and possibly sinking
- Scrambling for rescue
- Lots of people

You cannot reasonably assume humans will react in a rational sense when faced with these odds. Imagine looking at the sea on a normal day, scary isn't it? Vast, deep and treacherous. Now imagine it when its swelling up and you're on a ship being thrown around like a toy.,

That toy is also on fire.

I've been on the sea in a small boat and a large ship, it is fucking unbelievable regardless of ship size. People, for the majority could not handle it because it is so out of their normal pattern.

I will fight tooth and nail to survive but throwing people out the way? No thanks. I am quite capable of coping on my own.

this is why society is what it is today. Because so many people have been driven to think like this.

When things were good, the idea was that you gave your spot to women and children because you'd want the same to be done for your wife and child if the situations were reversed.

Different times, different values now though.

Regardless of religion, African men (not those of African origin who were raised in Europe/America) are more prone to give their place to women and elderly in buses/tramways, help them carry their bags/stuff, and be in general more family oriented than the Middle East.

Yeah, I kinda thought the same thing. In those societies, males are more important in a sense because if children are lost, they can be remade, and women can be replaced. That is very old mentality but you can see it sometimes in some African countries based on the way they treat the women and kids. Feminists/liberals like to point out shit like this any chance they get, Muslim or otherwise.

Pushing in line is also very common in some places in Asia like China or India for reasons, that are not simple to explain.

What this all boils down to is social contract. Do you live in a society that values your relative place in it and is there a strong communal and cultural spirit like Japan? If I were Japanese or in Japan then definitely women and children first.
