PSA: I pulled a massive tapeworm out of myself

The fish you buy at the grocery store usually isn't sushi grade fish. It shouldn't really be used to make your own sushi anyway.

But you can usually get away with using salmon or tuna. Store bought rarely has parasites.
I've used smoked salmon to make my own sushi before also.

Freezing and cooking usually kills stuff also.
The costo worm could be killed as soon as you toss it in the oven.

Parasites are often from normal water where the fish just eat whatever is floating around.and people just chop it up and eat.

I lived in upstate New York for a while and they told us not to eat a certain amount of
fish from the river because of parasites..plus mercury.

Slubu just got really unlucky.

If you want to save money on travel read a book called Travelers Health by Dr Richard Dawood.

You'll be so scared and disgusted after reading about all the parasites and diseases lurking out there you won't want to leave the house.

Fuck that is terrifying. Is there any way to tell how long you've had it?

This is pretty crazy, but if you're going to have anything, usually an animal/insect parasite is the best. They are unlikely to kill the host (unlike Ebola), and there is almost always a cheap straightforward medical treatment. These parasites are not systemic. Not saying I would want one of these. [Image: smile.gif]

Contrast this with anything that circulates in your bloodstream, such as a virus or a unicellular organism. Now you can be in real trouble.

He got it in Ukraine, maybe so did you?

Could be. I was in Ukraine in 2012 and 2013. I'm trying to remember when I last broke the 165lb mark, because I haven't broken that in a long time. Potentially it has something to do with this damn worm in me.

I have often wondered if there could be a way too genetically engineer a tapeworm to help you lose weight safely. Just kidding. Mostly

There's been companies/people that have done this as a means to lose weight.

Potentially. They took some blood from me to see how my Vitamin B12 levels are, as tapeworms apparently deplete it. My last regular check was in February of this year and I was fine, so if they are depleted that may give a clue that it was NOT during this recent trip because they wouldn't deplete that fast. The rest is just a guessing game however.

Like I mentioned above perhaps if I can track down the last time I weighed over 170 that may give me a clue, but again all speculation.

This type of shit worries me man. Until only recently I felt like I had some sort of bacterial infection going on inside of me for three months or so. Never really sick, but never truly healthy either.

A couple of times a year, I get sick. Like really sick, with the same symptoms, one of them always being an extremely sore and infected throat that is only on the right side of my throat and creeps so far up that it's on the side of my tongue. It generally happens right at the beginning on March and right at the end of August. It's happened three years in a row now, almost on the same dates. I often wonder if there's some sort of dormant viral or bacterial infection I've had for years that lays around until something, a change of season, or particle in the air, activates it.

I've been to some wacky places an as a necessity have eaten some questionable food. Who knows if I've acquired a crazy bug or viral infection on one of these trips.

Hmm, I like sushi and raw salmon a lot.
Could that include these kinds of things as well?

"Sushi grade" fish means fish that was previously frozen.

All sushi (or supposed to be all) is frozen and then thawed prior to serving.

The freezing process kills all or most parasites etc.

You should be good in the

Slubu thanks for sharing this experience.

Good to hear that you are ok Slubu. yeah, taking a 4 foot wrm out of your hole is traumatic, but if you read a little about it, you will find that te human body is an ecosystem, and that we are full of bugs. Most of them do us nothing, or are beneficial.

A few months ago I had a five week long diarrehoa streak.
I got it in Indonesia. I tested my stool in three different countries.

Indonesia, Thailand and Finland.

No one found anything wrong with it.

I didn't feel sick or had fever or anything.
At one point I think I would have been happy if I had found a worm or something.
At least there would have been a explanation for my illness!

After five weeks of shitting like I was pissing my stomach started to work fine again.

I still don't know what the hell that was all about.

Giardia in the water causes diarrhea that can come and go. It is hard to detect and a special stool test needs to be done. And results aren't 100%.

Have your doctor prescribe you metronadazole tablets. They are cheap...i can get 90 for 10 bucks at the supermarket.

Giardia is common in FSU water supplies in dangerous quantities. St Peters burg water is hazardous because of it.
Even NYC water has some and NYC has one of the safest bio protections in the world(largest UV water treatment in the world).

You need to start boiling water overseas. Buying bottled water isn't enough because :
1. bacteria and Giardia can form in the water
2. You can basically be buying bad water.

You will notice most locals boil their drinking water and/or drink carbonated water.

You can also get tapeworms from insects. Flies carry them. If they land on your meat it is all over.

Ukrainians/Russians constantly allow flies to fly around when they are eating/cooking..especially at the dacha.

Tip: beef tends to get the most tapeworms.... don't eat rare!

Do people have tapeworms for that long without symptoms?

It could have been an amoeba. Some of those things are hard to detect even with a stool sample. I felt bloated and had shits for a couple weeks after eating street food in Laos once. I looked online for my particular symptoms and took meds that were specifically for that.

Great, this has me thinking again, I just got back from a trip in early June of this year. Stayed in EE for about 2 weeks. Since I sat on the plane to fly there until I came back, I didn't have a single solid shit. The buddy I went with, same thing. We even BOTH started to notice some slight bleeding while taking a shit towards the end of the trip. Luckily I found out it wasn't anything internal, but just irritated skin that kept having to piss out bile.

Either way, I'm thinking it has a lot to do with the food and how it's processed over there, if at all. America has processed shit for years to the point where I now consider some shit as "food-like products". Over there, it's the real deal.

Kind of fucked up to think about, it's like in one generation we (Or at least I, parents were born in EE) have completely altered the way our body breaks down food. I'm sure this is normal to be quite honest, as If I were to move there I'd say about after a solid month or two my body would adapt. Still interesting though.

I feel pretty bad about that worm, though. All the time he had spent inside Slubu and heard countless hours of infield evidence and red pill wisdom. He probably had great game and was as red pill as it gets. Maybe Slubu should have pulled him out and let him go.

I'm not sure if these anthelmintic pills qualify as "red", but if yes then the worm both lived and died by the red pill:

I have been wondering about this for a while. On my travels I always ending shitting through the eye of a needle at some point, but I thinks thats just part and parcel of travelling to 3rd world countries. But one time in Brazil I was having a lot of BBQs... For about a month after I'd get serious hunger pangs after every meal. Like I'd be eating all day long just to relieve the pain. This was a few years ago and sensation eventually went away on its own... but I always wonder if it was a tape worm eating all my food. I think I have had a problem putting on weight since because I eat like a horse and never go over 11 stone. [/align]
