Golf Thread - Do you have balls?

I got one of those same Cleveland wedges last year, absolutely love it. My short game within 50 yards has seen an improvement. I'm sure a lot of that can be chalked up to fresh, sharp grooves, but it's still a good feeling.

I am pretty close to Bethpage black and I have not played on it. I need to get better, I am thinking about getting some lessons.

I've been playing with these new wedges and I really enjoy them. I lost about 10 yards a piece on them, but my wedge shots stop immediately now. Even half-swings are darts. The only downside is that I have to replace balls as they get gouged pretty easily now.

I just played 18 at the Kapalua Plantation course in Maui. The course hosts the PGA Tour Tournament of Champions every January. Fantastic course to play, amazing views from just about everywhere on the course.

Glad to see that there is a golf thread. Truly is the greatest game out there and loved BlurredLines's post on its advantages in the real world. It's an instant bond among successful men if you golf, and one of the best way's to get to know someone. You can go to a restaurant and deal with the awkward silences, small talk, etc over an hour or you can play a game outdoors, many times in remarkably scenic areas, and can bond over a 4 hour round while playing a stimulating and challenging game. Much more personal as well unlike tennis, where you are on opposite sides of the court and there is little down time for relaxation.

Hard to describe the feeling when you get the golf bug and to those that are avid golfers, you know what I mean. It is incredibly similar to life where you have your good days and bad days and never truly win, yet are satisfied when you achieved a mini-goal by shooting a certain score. You can at times be competing with others, but you are playing against yourself and the course. Until an 18 is officially recorded, the course will always win and your score is all relative to how you feel you played and what victories and losses you had in the round.

Definitely a difficult game to learn as you need to learn the fundamentals of the swing and then learn how to actually play the game on the course. Hitting range balls and chipping are totally different to playing a round and scoring well. Also, each shot needs to be approached differently, as you will fail if you swing the same from the fairway bunker as you do from the fairway itself.

Cannot recommend the game enough, played yesterday with some friends, drinking beers, and played wolf, which to anyone that's played knows is always exciting to the end. Not many things can match the feeling of a well-struck golf shot and the satisfaction of shooting a great score.

Similar to game as well, where you are constantly trying to improve, and it never ends. Certain times you feel on top of the world but are then humbled back to reality when a defeat occurs. But you keep on going, constantly evolve, use your specific strengths to your advantage, and achieve what you desire with effort and dedication. As Hardy said in Bagger Vance, "there ain't no other game like it."

Props to OP for the TRUMP shoutout in the first post. A man before his time...

Who has been hitting the links hard this year? I have been going out a ton, in the last few months I have shaved a ton of strokes off my scores, I used to be in the high 80s but lately I have been right around 80, even shot in the high 70s a couple times (albeit at easier courses!). My handicap will continue to drop to the sub - 10 level if I can keep it up. Got a new PING driver in honor of my #1 swing idol LOUIS OOSTHUIZEN, the purest swing in the game.

I stumbled across this YouTube coach:

Monte is really good -- I have come to realize that polluting my mind with 6 different pre-swing cues is fucking me up. Monte seems to understand this and comes up with simple methods to help you clear out the clutter and focus on a fundamental movement. For me this hip rotation cue is deadly, if I just imagine rotating my tailbone to 1030 then I have a good chance of hitting it straight. Another tip he had in a video was pretty good too - I can't find it. But basically, we all know the drill where you tuck a Towel under your back armpit (I swing right so my right armpit) to avoid going off plane and over the top. So he suggests before you swing, bunch up some of your shirt and tuck it in your armpit. I have been doing that as a pre shot Cue and combined with the Monte drill, things are looking up.

What sort of pre shot cues do you guys think of? It's crazy how the simplest things can make such a huge difference - even the old adage "keep your head level, don't look up" plays big dividends to the weekend warrior -- it's easy to forget shit.

I was gonna make the golf thread, but I guess this is it.

I am starting to get good. Today I shot a thirty eight on the front ninde at this place: https://hawaii.armymwr.com/programs/leil...olf-course That's Leilehua.

The clubs were my dads old ping eye two coppers that he left. My woods are old big Berthas and a cobra. I need to shop around some balls and try out some different ones.

I'm trying to just get good before I get caught up in the equipment. I bought some titleist fancy irons but I don't like them.

Putting was where i sucked ass. I missed a couple close ones today. But I found that if you read your putt from the side right in the middle between the ball and the cup, about eight feet back, it makes a huge difference.

I'm pretty lucky because there are some great courses here on Oahu. Plus, I have access to all the military ones. Tomorrow morning I'm playing at Turtle Bay, which is real nice. http://www.turtlebayresort.com/Hawaii-Go...mer-Course. Friday I'll play at Waialae Country Club, which has a PGA tournament at it every year.

This is my home course: https://www.honolulu.gov/des/golf/kahuku.html Its only nine holes, but those beaches are naked people. You see all the BYU girls all shy out there.

I used to think golf was for old people and boring, but I have a great time. Maybe I'm getting old.

Aloha!

If you're playing Ping Eye 2 BeCu irons and doing that well, you are way ahead of most players. I have a set like that in Blue dot I like, but the distance is not nearly as good as my Titleist AP2. It's like a 1-club difference.

Also, check out this company for your consumables. Gloves, balls, etc. Have only tried the 3-piece urethane ball for $20 a dozen, the top end glove for $7 or whatever, and I've been using the $100 rangefinder. All are so far so good.

Here ya go: https://mggolf.com

If the shipping doesn't kill you it's a great deal over the low end foot joy shit.

Also, if you like Ping, I have a G25 driver and G30 3-wood (both stiff shaft) I would send you for free if you think you'd want them. Both in 8+/10 condition.

Re: pre shot cues

I imagine something like this on my golf shoe laces.

Except mine are-

1. Tempo
2. Watch the ball, back and through

Kona what do you mean by the putt reading?? Like you stand like this to read them but more in the middle compared to where this guy is standing?

I shot an 87 today. I was on pace to do a lot better but hit the wall on the last three holes, double-double-double. I need to get some type of lesson for my putting.

If I'm understanding how the stats work, I was 100 percent on greens in regulation until the 15th hole.

Here's the course: https://course.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/cou...actual.htm

Well mahalo for the offer. I just ordered a ping driver the other day and its in transit! It is a used one, and I believe a generation prior to that. But thank you.

Thanks for the website, too. My options are really limited as far as stores go.

Interestingly, AP1 are the titleist irons I own.

Say the distance is eight feet. Imagine yourself at the top of a triangle five feet back right in the middle at four feet. It gives me a better picture, at least in my opinion.

Kona a good drill for putting is to look at the hole instead of the ball when you hit. Your eyes will automatically help your body gauge how far to hit it. Whenever I do practice putts I always look at the hole instead of looking down at the ball, helps firm up that muscle memory.

In fact Jordan Speith during tournaments stares at the hole on all of his putts within 5 feet during the entire putt. So it's even feasible to do during a regular game, not just the practice green. But this drill is generally better for amateurs on long putts that you just want to lag close to the hole.

Worth a shot, helped me a lot.

Living in Chicago we only get about 3-4 months or so of good golfing weather, but I've been out once already and now that it's getting nicer there will be plenty more opportunities. Not a scratch golfer, but pretty good. Excited about the new season!

I used to play a lot when I was a junior and was captain of my club at that level but I used to find the game so frustrating and I couldn't really find people of my age to play with. I quit in my mid 20s.

One thing I used to do was buy expensive balls. Titleist something, can't remember the name now but they were the soft ones. Anyone, my rationale was that if I was buying expensive balls, I would take more care over my game not to lose them.

Weirdly, now I've hit 40 I'm interested to start playing again.

This is basically what the guy at the golf club told me. I just need to practice it.

I shot an 82 today, which is my best yet. I played at Ko Olina http://www.koolinagolf.com

The thing is, there was some reason the real tee boxes were closed off, so it was from the ladies tees. Overall the whole course looked kind of burnt. I was not impressed.

Balata.

The equipment aspect of golf seems like it really can get in the way of getting better at the game. Every club says it is better than the other one.
