They're power fantasies for the powerless, which is why they're traditionally-associated with children. As healthy children age, they learn to recognise a sense of power over their own lives, which means they find the exaggerated, unrealistic fantasies on display in comics immature and silly compared to their reality, so discard them.
Current society discourages maturing into a healthy adult and having real control over your life: victimisation; phantom constructs to create a persecution complex; discouraging personal change instead of 'acceptance'; a constant mantra of 'empowerment' that rings false to the audience. A society of people who look like adults, but still respond as children. Comic book movies are simply their coping mechanism, which is why they're also attracted to shows like 'Breaking Bad' and 'Game Of Thrones', because they're about charismatic people
with agency.
Thinking about this, I think this is why feminists are demanding strong female role models in video games: even though they're powerful in our society, dogma has trained them to think of themselves as always being helpless victims, meaning they require the same bullshit power fantasies male gamers do, particularly as 'strong, independent' female characters end up as unrealistic and exaggerated as the roided out growly voice space soliders are.
I'm not attacking video games, as such. I play them without expecting the characters to be a reflection of my inner fantasies of who I wish I was, meaning I'm unconcerned if I'm playing a female or male character. It's the advantage of being happy in my own skin.
