Brand new iPhone 5C battery draining too fast
05-07-2014, 10:39 PM
So I bought a new iPhone 5C about 3 weeks ago as my 4 year old iPhone 4 just died out of the blue. However, the brand new phone, there seems to be something wrong with the battery as it drains way too fast. Even with my old iPhone 4 I was able to get a full day use out of each full charge. However the new phone I have to fully charge it twice per day!
I checked the Apple forums and did all they recommend which is to remove automatic push and updates to emails, apps and FB. It seemed to work very briefly, maybe for a day or two to have the battery last me all day, but its now back to being drained way too fast.
Has anyone had the same issue with the Iphone 5C? And if yes, were you able to fix it and how?
Another thing: bought the phone from Best Buy and the guy who sold it, sold me also their extended warranty which is for 2 years that is the duration of my contract/tab with my phone carrier. It's 13 bucks a month and should there be any problems with the phone during that time, they'd give me a new phone on the spot.
Has anyone bought this Best Buy warranty on the phones and specially the iphone 5c? Is it worth it? I can cancel it within the first 30 days which will be up next Wednesday. Is it a keeper or a waste as the Apple warranty would be enough?
Appreciate your feedback and any tips guys.
Cheers.

Everything I've heard is that Apple's support is excellent. Just bring it into the store. I'd bring it to the store, see what they say, and if they can fix it, cancel the BB contract.
I read an article recently with a number of tips, though I can't find the link right now. It seemed like the best tip was to disable location services for apps that don't absolutely need it. The author cited Facebook's app as one that chews up the battery when location services are enabled. Apparently the FB app must ping your location constantly, but if you disable location, that'll stop.

You can just go straight to an Apple store they will most likely swap it..I recommend you cancel the best buy warranty unless you run some risk of actually breaking the phone really bad or getting it wet due to work or activities.

Yeah just swap it out mate. It's definitely not normal and not just because of location services etc.

Thanks guys for the feedback . Will go to the Apple store tomorrow or Friday.
BiCien,
The BB warranty doesn't cover anything water related or of the phone falls. Thinking about it, it doesn't cover much that the Apple warranty doesn't so will cancel that right away.
Has anyone had this same problem with the IPhone 5C? Or did I get a lemon?
A trip to my local Apple store is booked for the next day or two.
Thanks again guys!

I like my 5c, the most common "gotcha" I've seen is when you are in an area with no coverage..I've had batteries drain quickly there possibly cuz the phone keeps maxing out trying to reach a cell tower.

The battery on my iphone 5 was shit also. I got the Mophie juice pack plus, biggest one, with supposedly 120% recharge capability. Even with that, I could easily run it to dead throughout a day.
Seems like a common problem in the 5 and later.

I was running into this same problem as well with my iPhone 5 - turn off all location services that you don't regularly need/use... a good example is having photos geo-tagged everytime you take a picture. That isn't necessary at all in my opinion. You can also go to Settings--> General -->Accessibility and turn off "Reduce Motion" which is a stupid thing that causes your phone's background to shift behind the icons as you move the phone.
I've also got the smallest Mophie Juice pack and wouldn't be able to get through the day without it. Previously I'd get home from work with a battery hovering in the 15-30% range, then Id be stuck at home waiting for my phone to charge for an hour. The smallest juice pack is advertised as giving an extra 80% which has proven accurate so far.
Another point for Mophies is that you should let you phone drain down pretty low before switching it on, since it requires less energy to charge up a phone that's nearly drained, ie going from 20-70%, than getting that last 10% from 90-100%. Point being, it takes a ton of energy to get that last 10% in your phone.

^^^ You're right, but the numbers were 20-80%. Mophie recommended using the juicepack between 20-80%. Apparently it takes more energy to charge from 80-100% and up to 20%. Location services, total apps running, and screen brightness are the biggest factors it seems. I really think Apple could do better on their batteries and power efficiency as well as the quality control and consistency of the batteries themselves.

I am going to get the 6 and sell my 5s for this reason. I got the Tech21 case for the phone, and it looks brand new. Before that I broke 3 screens in 3 months.

Anyone using one of the battery apps? I am trying to figure out if my battery is ok. The apps I have downloaded seem to say everything is ok but it seems to be dying quickly these last two days.
The more I study these apps, they do seem to have the ability to help stretch your juice which is helpful when you are not near a power source.
I am messing around with Battery Life and Battery HD+ - both had good reviews

The Apple store has access to a diagnostic tool. It'll relay any errors from the battery or other sources. It has been a while, but I think it lists the top apps using the most juice.
Besides, they'll just swap it out as it's within the first year.

I had my three year old iPhone 5's battery replaced recently. At the Apple Store they diagnosed it as near its end of lifecycle. The Li-ion batteries have only so many charge cycles and then stop holding charge. After disgnosis I kept using it a while longer. By the end I was down to twenty minutes per charge, if I tried listening to music.
At a repair shop some kid opened it up with a screwdriver and razor blade and popped a new battery in. Took about 2 minutes. You can buy DIY battery kits for $25 but I paid $50 for the battery plus installation*. Apple charges $80.
*Think about that - if you could line up customers and do one every 10 minutes that's $150 per hour.
If only you knew how bad things really are.
