Facebook Deactivation 90 Day Challenge- How long have you guys gone without Facebook?
04-17-2014, 11:41 AM
Deactivated mine for about 6 months and went back to it. It is now deleted. There is nothing of real value there that I can't get from real human interaction. I've posted elsewhere my opinions about how social media is destroying our ability to communicate with others.
I also agree with above comments that it is emasculating and in a sense beta.

FB has been good for reconnecting with old Army buddies and lost friends from high school. It has lead to some fun in-person reunions. Other than that, I've blocked or deleted all of the attention whores, and I primarily use it for staying in touch with friends separated by distance.

Why do you have to be so extreme about this? Like ''I can either delete it or be addicted to it''... Why can't you just use it as a means to keep in touch with some friends (especially those who live abroad) and to invite some girls on a date (when you don't have her number or she will be scared off if you call her), and leave it at that?
As for annoying attention-whoring shit, you can just unfollow or unfriend those people, or even better, just don't spend hours checking your newsfeed. Where is the logic in letting this annoying shit make you delete your online profile in this internet age where your online profile is a big deal whether you like it or not.
I got laid many times due to randomly starting to chat on fb with a girl i had lost contact with. And I didn't even use fb to add or message some random girls to get to know them, which would increase my lays, had I put some effort in pipelining. I just used it as a tool to escalate to date quickly and in the end it was worth wasting a couple minutes everyday that I couldn't help wasting.

Facebook is like a hammer. It's a tool. You can either build something with it or hit yourself in the thumb.
I went a year without any kind of social media. It saved me some time and a little bit of anger. When I reactivated my personal Twitter and Facebook accounts, I made the commitment to not being pissed off about social media. I treat my FB like a business. I use it to build my "personal brand". Since reactivating FB, I've gotten a bang out of reconnecting with an old acquaintance, plus about four thousand dollars worth of contract work that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
If you use social media, be smart about it. Make your FB one gigantic DHV so girls want to fuck you. Post about the cool things you do and hide the feeds of the people you don't want to interact with.

^^^ That's one of the things that annoys me most about FB. All the constant boasting on there.
"My life is just awesome!"
"I'm so in love with the greatest person ever!"
"Just got promoted! My company rocks!!!"
"My stocks are flying high!"
"My kids are sooo smart and awesome!"
"I'm snorkeling in the great barrier reef and next week I'm climbing Everest!"
If you read people's Facebook feed you'd think everyone had perfect, amazing lives. And I'm not gonna lie, I've done the same myself. I've had people tell me my life seems so cool based on my Facebook when at that time I was actually miserable. But everyone only attention whoring and posting their highlights gives a inauthentic version of who they are. After a while I just got sick of reading constant boasting and started blocking people who do nothing but brag.
Some people do post interesting commentary or observations that start discussions. And those peeps are worth reading.

You left out the status whoring foodies who post photos of their meal at some trendy restaurant.

I will raise you: Never had a FB, Twitter, Instagram, MySpace, or Pinterist account. Never will either. Never liked the concept of sharing details of my life in a public way.
Co-sign. I know just one person my age IRL who has never had the above either.

Rule of thumb that stretches beyond Facebook:
People that portray elaborate, sophisticated, positive, or exciting lives are often on the other side of zero. If you were in a room, the person talking up their job the most is probably just an admin making a $28k salary, and can't stay at one gig for a year. However, the one that talks least about work is probably the one with the most responsibility and salary.
People should know by now that all of the lovey-dubby comments on Facebook are coming from those in an unstable relationship. People who have their "dream job" are six month from quitting. Those who are having "such an incredible day" are just fortunate to have one day that doesn't suck ass, and those that upload a lot of pictures of themselves have insecurities regarding their image. People that post a picture of being out with friends while they are still out with friends and are "having such a good time" actually feel left out.
Those who are quiet on Facebook are the ones that are the happiest with their lives. However, those who don't have a Facebook account are mentally messed up nine times out of ten. It's usually an indicator that they are hiding.
Aziz Nuts is right on. Also, the only people that go cold turkey are those who have a problem.

You were doing great until that bit.
Right on with your opening paragraph. Holds true for all walks of life, from the hero elite marine who doesn't need to talk about it to the multi-millionaire who stops to chat whilst walking his dog.
My 'bullshit radar' has been getting much more finely tuned these past few years. I'm getting far better at sounding people out quickly. It's a useful skill.

I deleted my FB account after my last LTR and never looked back, it has been almost a year now. Just think of all the time I saved not scanning news feeds and looking at a bunch of drunken slut selfies....
Also my first post, I started reading ROK a while ago but just got added to the forum.
Keep up the good work men.

Because never before has there existed a medium where you could get so much instant attention for doing so little.
Girl posts a picture of a fucking cupcake and she might have 25 likes before she's even done eating it.

As BB pointed out, having facebook is the easiest way to keep in contact with people when you travel often and have friends and contacts from all over the world.
For the "local" people who are living in my area I couldn't give a damn about their daily boasting.
If people annoys you online, just unfriend or block everyone you don't like.
I have a pretty small circle of FB friends.
I don't like the idea of being "addicted" to any social media, but I also don't need to be extreme.
Use it like a tool and a contact list and not more than that.

I blocked it on notebook, though using its messenger on mobile to keep in touch with peep. A good way to use it if you don't want to see all that crap people post.

Is there a way to delete all your Facebook photos at once?
Or at least in chunks - maybe album by album?
Not sure I want to get rid of it completely, but I would like to ditch a lot of the photos. Many are of me looking drunk and haggard, as I uploaded them in my late 20s when partying a lot. Not a good look. I may remove all of them completely and only upload stuff without my face to go more incog.
I know you can have Facebook email all your data to you so you don't lose anything, but apart form deleting the account I don't know if there's a way to wipe mass photos off the account.

14 months. Got rid of FB, cable box,and keep the Tv for watching movies. The only thing I "keep up" with is the hunt for good music. Now just roll with a solid stereo system replete with record player.

I would never deactivate my Facebook for the following reasons:
1. Deactivation would be an acceptance of a lack of self-discipline. I am self-disciplined, therefore, I can without checking my facebook for days or months.
2. Keeping in touch with my friends around the world. Every time I visit a city where I have friends, I can simply send them a Facebook message and meet up. It also comes in handy for keeping in touch with friends I meet through my travels.
3. Local events are posted. I cannot count the number of times I've been to a great party, listened to some great music or had some great food because I heard about it through Facebook.
All in all, Facebook is a lot like cocaine. Use it in moderation and it will do wonders. But use it multiple times a day (like most idiots with a smartphone) and you're screwed.

I got rid of a personal Facebook account about 8 months ago. I maintain a private one with no friends under a pseudonym just so I can manage my band's page because you can't admin a page without a normal user account.
It's easy to say "just don't go on it" etc. But I also don't want people scoping me out. I don't want to be tagged in shit. I don't want people to be able to research me. Our cultures reliance and dedication to social media is sickening.
I had an okc prospect stop talking to me because I don't have a Facebook account she could creep on to see what I do with my life; she refused to talk to me or get to know me through normal human interaction - she had to be ale to snoop my online footprint. Take your life.
All these fucking vapid zombies staring at their cell phones living heir lives through a 4" LCD screen. Just scrolling up and down newsfeeds full of pictures of cats, dinner, and vacation spots. You go to an event and it's a sea of people with their cell phones out taking pictures and video of it. Jesus christ live your life. Don't be that guy.
