Tenerife is expensive for accomodation and you won't find any appartment for less than 100 EUR/night if you stay in the area of Playa de Las Americas.
I met few Yanks in the island, for either surfing and gaming chicks.

100 EUR a night? Damn shame for residing in that area, but what about the rest of the south? That seems to be where it'll still be the most fun.

Forgive me, gents. If mango had posted up a good place to rent a room or apartment, I must have missed it. Where have you guys rented your rooms/apartments at? It seems like a good destination to escape from my part of America for awhile.

How long do you mean, awhile?

GC's €100 prices are to walk up to a hotel lobby for a nightly rate.

If you were planning to stay for a while.........

Mango mentioned a couple of places close to Veronicas, Yomely (a couple of high rise blocks), which towers above the starco development and Altamar, a complex just a little bit further up the road. These two amongst others are where the workers live. Mango was getting his room for €35 a week! but suggested €50 was a more realistic rent price per room, that was 3 years ago. So, say around €60-65ish now.

Getting a job touting (as Mango did) or chatting to the bar/restaurant touts, timeshare sellers, bar staff should get you best results. They usually approach you looking for your business, so start up a chit-chat. What would be your rent budget?

I'm trying to save up a bit of cash now to escape my hometown for a bit, so I'm aiming for the €40-50 range for about 3 months. If it's around the €60-65 range, I would definitely need to start chatting up a few places to see if I can land some additional income while I'm there or cut down the length of time that I'd stay there unless my internet income decides to blow up.

Those places do seem like a good way to start off in finding a place to stay. Only real thing I need is a bed and decent wifi. What was your experience like over there? I appreciate the advice you guys are giving.

Price will depend on the season (high/low) and who you hook up with. I would guess Mango arrived at the start of the year Jan/Feb (low season) and either knew or bumped into a good contact who set him up for the bargain €35. Utilities and wi-fi (if he had it) would have been separate.

Depends what the aims of your stay would be, you could rent cheaper outside of the resorts. Adeje village, Los Gigantes, Silencio, Golf Del Sur etc. but that's not where the action happens.

Some of the surfers, you see them 365 days on the way from Las Americas to Los Christianos along the front, they do the nomad RV life. Some have nice kitted out vans and Tenerife is a pretty safe enviroment with plenty of places to park up. The perfect climate in the south of the Island helps too.

I go mostly for a holiday although on occasion I have been asked to help out in remodelling jobs, but I have a social group of ex-pat semi retired-semi resident friends who have introduced me to many of the Tenerife south characters. Other friends have done exactly what Mango did, arrived on a cheap package holiday(-£200 flight & self catering apartment included for 1 or 2 weeks), met a few of the touts, got a job selling timeshares, patched the return flight and ended up staying there for a couple of years. It is actually possible.

The touts are a friendly bunch, some like yourself are looking to get away for a bit, some may be running from the law, others are just out there for the adventure of a resort season. All of them are young men living their lives in a pretty decent location for a young guy. If you feel the lifestyle Mango described is for you, go join them and have a chat, if nothing else you will learn a shit-load of new approach game just by observing them. [Image: smile.gif]

Sounds like getting a package deal is going to be the way to go. I've been obsessing about this trip since I saw the datasheet and figure it'd be a nice change of pace. And I do need to step my approach game some, so I believe this will be the best place to step it up.

How were they able to stay for a couple of years? I wonder since I carry an American passport that it would be harder for me to pull off, unless I'm sorely incorrect in my assumption.

After the first week in January the prices for package holidays plummet, Christmas & New Years weeks are the most expensive of the year, after that the hotels and planes are empty allowing you to pick up a deal at a rock bottom price. Going solo, a studio would do, unfortunately a single supplement would probably need to be paid.

Nov-Feb = Low Season (excluding holiday period), Mar-Oct = High Season. Remember though, Tenerife is full of timeshares, people have already booked their apartment for the same weeks, year in year out. Because of the weather even during the low season it's still busy, although the run up to Christmas and the period after New Year are the quietest times of the year. Some of the smaller bars/restaurants will close up after 1st week in January and take their own holiday.

Obsessing [Image: lol.gif] yeah Mango did paint a colourful picture with his brief but descriptive OP, (back when the forum was less mainstream, shall we say). I believe his stats as I have heard similar stories. Touting gives you that licence to approach anything with a purpose, a very useful tool.

You would initially have a 3 month tourist visa, if you are still there by the time this ends you will know how to remain there legally or not. Immigration laws are generally pretty lax, lots of Africans from Gambia & Senegal roam the resorts selling sunglasses during the day then Rolex's at night. They are kept in check with the police though.

So stop obsessing and over thinking it, get the money stacked, get the package booked and get the fuck over there, trying something is always better than always wondering, what if. Not saying this forum is well read, but before you know it there will be dozens of jacked up bearded guys with American accents trying to woo the Swiss and Scandinavian hotties into their pet shop themed bars with the promise of a free house special cocktail called 'The Hamster'. Good luck man, report back here with an update. [Image: smile.gif]

Any idea how the scene might be end of this month and New Year's? Will be headed down there with a buddy...maybe a few friendly Scandinavian tourists?

NYE is fuckin jumping in Las Americas bayblue, have spent many NYE's there, ticketed events with meals etc are available in all the main complex's/restaurants, fireworks off all the buildings etc, but the real action happens around the Veronicas & Starco venues.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but for shear numbers of people off their nuts having a rage, it's pretty fuckin good.

It's the busiest night of the year and also the most expensive time for a package deal. Flight alone one year cost me £700! How much did you and your buddy pay for flights and accomodation bayblue?

Friendly Scandinavian tourists you say........ Well across from Veronica's going up the hill past Murphys and Linekers by about 150yards you'll find a couple of Viking joints in the basement under the Playazul. Warms up around 10.30pm.

Does anyone know anything about living there full time in retirement? I just want to ride my bicycle all the time.
Is there an illegal immigrant problem? Much harassment?

Hey IKE, Tenerife south has a great climate all year round, lots of people retire there. Not as humid, corrupt or dangerous as some sets of islands around the world. [Image: wink.gif]

Residency is quite easily attainable as is the purchase of property, a decent 2 bed condo/apartment can still be had for around €100,000, although there are other yearly maintenance fees.

Along the front is perfect for bike riding, wouldn't fancy riding up the volcanoes though.

No illegal immigration issues, most harassment is 'Asda Price' man trying to sell you sunglasses or watches and the new kid on the block, the Chinese women with the flashing/spinning led garbage. Not any Aloha Snackbars.

Just booked up for a week in Tenerife in January for some winter sun and warmth which will be well needed by then. Apparently, the nightlife is still reasonably decent even at that time of year. Flying over to Gran Canaria after for family.

Just booked a holiday there for 4 days in November. Hopefully the weather is good as I just want to chill by a pool for a few days, and I'm already trying to get some locals lined up. Looks like on Instagram they know some really cool places, so even if I can use a 7 for a tour guide, that'd be great.

I am thinking about coming out here for Christmas of 2020 and stay over into New Years 2021. I work the night shift for a transportation company, in the USA. If I stay where I am at and ride it out. I might take two weeks off, party and ring in the New Year. That will give me a year or two to save up 4 or 5,000 dollars and blow it on vacation. Should be an interesting time.

@ Brosemite: las americas, playa de los cristianos, adeje etc anywhere with Brits and Scandis. Local girls are the most open to foreigners in the whole Spain (Good looks and game required). Las Palmas (the other big island) is another good option.

I can't remember the names of the bars, havent been there in a long time. I'd try to ask locals, local people are friendly and they should help you. If you don't speak Spanish: " Hola, donde puedo ir para conocer chicas? Algun bar o discoteca?"

Just back from a trip to Tenerife along with a visit to Gran Canaria with my main girl. I absolutely loved it. It is a serious contender as somewhere to live + go for parts if not all winter. Something awesome about being on a beach with girls nude sunbathing in January. Playa de Fanabe is the best by far. Drinking heavy every night, good steak and my main loved it as well. I appreciate a holiday is different from living somewhere but having the sun reliably day after day makes a huge difference. The best climate in the world and having not visited the Canaries since very young in 2000 (Lanzarote and Fuereventura) I'll be out there at least once a year as long as I am in Europe. I Stayed on a boat in the Puerto Colon Marina so was an interesting experience. Had music blasting every day and just chilling with my girl on the front or on the beach most of the time. Walked all over from Costa Adeje to Los Cristianos one of the days.

One of the best trips of my life. Viva España!

Im looking to spend some extended time in Tenerife. Considering going as a permanent move. Getting quite tired of Estonia.

Im looking for a good city to base from that has Good Spearfishing and freediving nearby. Also Windsurfing and BJJ. I work online remotely so I need a solid broadband connection as well. A good safe beach for kids nearby would be great as well.

I will be driving my jeep from Europe on the Ferry so I will have transport.

I am also considering La Palma, Fuerteventura, el hierro or La gomera if anyone has experience with those islands.

Could a guy train BJJ, windsurf and spearfish on La Palma? Im considering a move to the Canaries and looking for the best base to operate from. Cool dynamic seabed terrain for freediving with fish to hunt spearfishing is my main hobby but I would like a BJJ gym and a place to windsurf nearby as well.

How expensive is it to travel between islands with a car on the ferry?
