You control the pitch and loudness of your voice, but sneezes (and coughs) are natural reflexes, which is why consciously restraining them causes a slight, unnatural pain. If my nose is under my shirt I feel no reason to not go max power. My nose > their ears. Of course people who do decide to hold it in are more polite. Interestingly, I'd lessen the noise of a cough or fart but never a sneeze.

It seems likely that people who generally do a "monstrous sneeze" are over exaggerating (like the loud belcher) or in some sick way trying to further extend the pleasure from that release. Who knows... but it's an interesting topic. I believe people have certain behavioral tells that quickly signal what they are like in general (a skill that can be acquired by an observant person who dates or interacts with many people).

My sneezes are loud and violent and I prefer to have a tissue in my hand to catch any "spray" so I don't have to wash my hand after every single sneeze...but very often they come so fast & hard my hand doesn't make it over my mouth in time. Afterwards I have to take a breath to recover.

I have ZERO control over the speed, noise and strength of my sneezes.
Trust me, if there was a way I could make them less "intense" I would gladly do it every time.
I don't enjoy the sensation when I sneeze one bit.

If I even tried to hold it in, I think I'd tear a muscle, or my eyes would pop out of my head, or I'd damage something in my brain.
