To me, rolling your pants legs can be a good way to show off your shoes and socks or keep cooler in the summer but it can also look like shit if you're not doing it right.

Just like with tying a tie, there are a bunch of really basic guides out there that don't break down anything more than the most standard styles and won't help you look anything more than average.

I had a talk with my new off-white suede brogue bucks and we decided that I needed to master this underappreciated art, so I was very happy to come across this site:

Tame the Roll

It has videos showing four different styles of rolling, as well as a bunch of photos showing them in action. I'm really feeling the "Pinch Hit" and "Rustle" because they keep the leg opening tapered even after rolling, which was my main problem.

Good linkage. I suspected my new wingtips would look best with a small cuff roll, and in practice the effect is really quite sharp. I don't roll it too high, just enough to contrast between the shoes and the pants leg but not so much that you're showing half a foot of socks while you're walking around.

I don't think you can look very masculine rolling up pants while wearing shoes. Its always been popular with the gay, preppy, skater, hipster "in" crowd, and real men don't populate those.

First of all, both of those pics are rolled...a cuff is one fold. Second pic is cool but that first pic looks like shit. How long do your pants need to be where you can roll a three inch cuff four times and it still sits at your ankles? James needs a tailor, not a cuff.

Masculine males set the style trends. Whether it be work clothes, cuffed pants, leather, or uniforms. This really took off in the 1950's, when the Greatest Generation returned home and some men were still full of piss 'n vinegar, and were jaded from doing a little killing for their country. Semper Fi.


   



They rebelled and started dressing differently, using slang, and created a counter culture. Think Hells Angles. At some point though, all these trends gets picked up by effeminate men. Gays like studded leather, cuffing pants with loafers, gyms and beefing up, sailor uniforms, ect.


   

All these initial style trends had a certain purity, but then get poisoned by the weak masses. My advice is to ignore it and continue dressing like man, and you will set yourself apart from 99% of the male population. And I promise, that 95% of the female population will take notice and appreciate it.

The most important part of the pants is how they transition into the shoe. It should be a gentle transition that makes the body shape look like an upside down triangle. The trousers should not bunch at the bottom. Plus, they shouldn't be too baggy, as they'll look like flares (even more feminine than skinny jeans in my opinion).

I see so many guys on the BTS practically rocking a pair of parachute pants.

Here's a facebook photo I stumbled upon last night. The dreadful trouser-fit made me angry haha. But, when 99% of men rock a suit, this is the atrocity they commit :



Here's another example, but this time not related to a suit (i.e more on topic). The guys jeans make him have an oblong body-shape:



He's doing his chest span no favours and those pants aren't going to get any girls pants wet. The jeans make him look much thinner than he actually is. The solution is a pair of tighter-fitting jeans that taper as they get nearer to the shoe. (And also some clothes that aren't as horrendously boring).

Rolling up your pants is just one way of making that transition as nice as possible. Plus it's a good one for hot weather/showing off to Asian girls. I usually only use this when the bottom of the trouser leg is just a little bit too 'open' for the pants to sit on the shoe like normal.

Still, it can break up a suit and make you look less wooden.

As for it being hipster/feminine. Well, it's only hipster and feminine if you make it so. Remember the following:

1) Don't wear brightly-coloured pants: Best to stick with Black, Brown, Grey and Beige. If you want to look masculine, don't try and rock the boat with trouser colour.

2) Make sure they're not TOO skinny. They should ripple at the knee and down the leg. They should not look like women's jeggings.

3) Keep the 'upper-abdomen' clothes masculine. Perhaps just a tight-fitting white shirt. Nothing too showy. Usually I try to have ONE 'showy' thing with my clothes. If my pant legs are rolled up I'll be more inclined to keep the shirt more 'business'

EDIT: This is a great comment and it deserves to be highlighted. You've chosen a look because of a very specific issue relating to FIT. That's how men should seek out clothes. You haven't just gone "Oh I want to look more showy so I'll roll my trousers up like a hipster" or "I'll buy pants from Armani because Armani make good clothes"

The 'pinch hit' I know as pin rolls, and was a 90s thing in the UK (I remember skaters, kids at jungle raves, and guys wearing Jordans etc. used to do it). I don't like it.

The community is FULL of DL brothas and if a female even for one second thinks you have ever once in your life sucked a dick, will cold shoulder your ass in NY second. I guess girls don't want to contract life-long flu like symptoms. Go figure, selfish bitches. If you roll your pants up and hang out in Atlanta, that is exactly the vibe you will give off. Guaranteed.

Again, wear what you will, and I'm not say you will never get laid, but when I write advice, it is generally aimed towards masculinity and achieving success with higher quality women.

Rolling jeans are very popular among denim geeks, as they get to show off their expensive selvage jeans, which is the term for the self-finished edges of fabric. I personally think it looks like shit for jeans. Not hating on selvage as many claims its denim of higher quality. Just seems very try hard to show it off.




Cuffing chinos however can be cool in the right environment summer time. Gives a sporty casual vibe to it.

Just don't were socks, and have some cool shoes.

Does anyone on here know anything about it? What are the advantages?

Back on topic, it looks good only with fitted/tapered trousers. with a straight leg I think it just flaps about, unless you have a heavy boot (think combat boots or larger).

I wear selvedge and raw denim and I dont like the rolled look, I dont really see the practicality in it over trying to make a look and add some style. Was in a higher end denim shop today and all the guys there were rolling them, its in style for the vintage look. I like the longer bunched look.
