Police State: NYC bans tobacco sales to anyone under age 21

Another attack on future International Playboys.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed a bill banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone under age 21.

The legislation makes New York the first large city or state in the country to prohibit sales to young adults.

During a bill-signing ceremony Tuesday, Bloomberg said the law will help prevent young people from experimenting with tobacco at the age when they are most likely to become addicted.

City health officials say 80 percent of smokers start before age 21.

Tobacco companies and some retailers had opposed the age increase. They say it will simply drive teenagers to the city's thriving black market.

The ban has limitations, in terms of its ability to stop young people from picking up the deadly habit. Teenagers can still possess tobacco legally. Kids will still be able to steal cigarettes from their parents, bum them from friends or buy them from the black-market dealers who are common in many neighborhoods.

"What are you really accomplishing? It's not like they are going to quit smoking. Why? Because there are so many other places they can buy cigarettes," said Jim Calvin, president of the New York Association of Convenience Stores. "Every 18-year-old who walks out of a convenience store is just going to go to the guy in the white van on the corner."

I had a high school kid who would have gone in with me on a cigarette scheme about two years ago but I didn't trust him enough to go through with it. I was going to order them for ~$35 a carton off the Internet and charge slightly below market price here. I would have made a killing!

Damn, that's fucked up. I'm willing to bet this law will stop exactly 0 people from smoking underage should they decide they want to smoke.

I remember going to Utah when I was 18 to snowboard. I tried buying a pack of smokes and they told me I had to be 19. I thought that was fucked up, but 21? At 18 you can die for your country, but now not only can you not drink, you can't smoke? So if we aren't old enough at 18 to make rational decisions for ourselves, how can you rationally make a decision to go die in Afghanistan? Sometimes the US just makes me shake my damn head and say, "what the fuck is going on?"

Exactly. Laws like this will cause more young people to smoke. Many studies show that people will do things they normally wouldn't do if it is all of a sudden "against the rules". Prohibition created thousands of alcoholics virtually overnight, and gave way to massive increases of violent crimes stemming from the illicit sale of the banned alcohol.

As long as the mouthbreathing public keeps electing these assholes who believe that they not only have the right, but the obligation to run people's lives, we'll keep seeing these harmful policies pop up.

Morons, the lot of them. I didn't start heavy smoking until I was 21.

Exactly katatonic. Just like amersterdam locals smoke much less weed than Americans. Just because something is illegal doesn't mean people aren't going to do it, especially young people. In fact, they'll do it just to rebel.

Another good point about illegal activities and smuggling of liquor during prohibition. It gave the mob a fat bank roll. Shit, G's first thought was, "new way to make money." I was thinking the same thing. I was even thinking it when I found out cigs were $16 a pack in manhattan. This is the same reason I think ALL drugs should be legal. Why are we gonna let the cartels make all that money when we can be taxing it and pumping that money into our roads, education, etc. we could also ensure people were smoking and shooting up fucked up chemicals by controlling the quality. A weird world this is.

Are cigarettes really $16 a pack in Manhattan? Fuck, I'm in the wrong business. Time to fill up the car and head east.

I remember when I was in high school in California and the smoking age was 18. It was impossible to get cigarettes if you were a minor. The park was absolutely not filled with high school kids smoking cigarettes and cutting classes every single day.....or smoking weed for that matter...or having sex in the bathroom stalls...or beating the shit out of each other behind the building....etc.

Yeah, in manhattan, I paid between $14-16 a pack.

I grew up outside of Vegas, and in nevada, cops can't write you a ticket for smoking under age. At best they may be able to take your pack away, but I only saw it happen when kids were already busted for something else, like under age drinking. They would profile you though and try and stop you on the street to see if you had pot on you. I think nevada is one of the only states with this law. I heard something about jersey having it too. You can smoke under age, you just can't buy them. I remember when we'd make trips to cali, we were always cautious not to get one of the tabbaco tickets we had heard of. I remember feeling strange having to go hide in a descretely place with my cousin when we'd go smoke.
