Yesterday was a pretty interesting day. Today as well.

Day 3: triple up & death threats

Yesterday I had a date with a girl I met online. We were supposed to meet in front of a hotel in Petionville at 5pm. I arrive half an hour late but when I call her:

It's embarrassing. A sober part of my brain takes over again, this money isn't even worth the drama. It's so shitty, but it had be going on for a while. It has escalated far enough.

She leaves, but not without some death threats.

"If I see you again in Barac, you're dead!"

A bitter reminder of the risky business that is shoring, sometimes it goes wron beyond your control and when it does you have to deal with shitty situations like this.



Girl 3 (online game)

I had been mixing beers with my vodka so I wake up at 1 pm with a hangover, my phone is ringing: the girl I flaked on yesterday.

Well, waking up with a hangover is bad but this made it a lot better.

They are killing and robbing the dominicans more because dominicans have more money and they look rich. The rich people here in Haiti are mullato looking. There is tension between the two countries, but I bet most of those are just because those Dominicans are in the wrong area and look rich. To a person just fighting to stay alive, it will look like an easy target.

In fact THC and I can't leave our hotel tomorrow because it's Haiti's independence day. Because so many people are starving to death, people aren't exactly happy to be haitian. The president is half white and half black and many haitians want him dead. They think that all the Mullato's are living the high life while the 100% blacks are starving to death (which is true) so there will be tons of poor Haitians marching into Petion-ville (where THC and I are) to do manifestations because that's where the most Mullato's (rich people) are living.

I already saw pictures of burning rubble in the street on the facebook of one of my girls here, and independence day hasn't even started.

The problem isn't really the tension between the countries. It's the fact that the average Dominican makes 10,000$ a year and the average Haitian makes 1000$ a year (that's including the elite class so poor people will make less, these places have very little middle class). So when a Haitian sees light skin, whether Dominican, White, or Haitian, they just see all the money that you have, and when your choices are starve to death or attack the light skinned guy over there, things will get shady.

I really think the only order here is done by the UN (you will see armored UN cars driving around with UN guys armed to the teeth). Their police force seems non existent.

That being said, if you stay in the safe areas (much smaller here than anywhere I have ever been) it can be better. I won't say safe, because this place obviously just isn't a safe country, but if you are an experienced traveler and you do the research you should be able to stay out of trouble.
