The Gym Survey

Just bought a three-month membership at my gym tonight and it got me wondering about the gyms where you all work out.
  1. How much do you pay for a membership and how long does it last?
  2. What do you get with the membership (locker room, pool, sauna, etc.)?
  3. What type of clientele goes to your gym?
I'll get it started.
  1. $27/month, $69/3 months, a few others in there too (including a $2 fee per day if you don't have a membership).
  2. Basic gym with weights and some cardio equipment. Locker room and one shower people hardly use. No frills and that's why I like it.
  3. Dedicated bodybuilders and people truly interested in fitness. More male-dominated, as I bet you can tell, but there are a few women who know what to do in there.
Interested in seeing what's up.

1. $90/month in Tokyo
2. Very basic. Locker room and shower. Treadmills, machines, stretching area, free weights area and one smith machine and only one power rack.
3. Mostly office workers who live nearby. It's pretty rare to see hot girls but it happens sometimes (why do they invariably only use the treadmill and then go home?)

All I use is the power rack so I'm paying $90/month for almost nothing. Millions of machines and only one power rack. Why can't Japanese gyms provide more free weights? I challenge anyone to find a worse value gym than this! [Image: dodgy.gif]

1. $9 a month for a grandfathered LA Fitness membership I've had since 1995. I believe its the highest level because I can use the signature clubs, which include towel service.

2. Pretty much everything that the LA Fitness chain has, multi-state locations too. Its not the best but the Signature clubs are pretty empty which is good. The regular clubs are pretty bad though. The main advantage is that I have two clubs built in the last two years that are within a 5 minute drive and one of the clubs is 6 blocks from me.

3. Mainly middle aged upper middle class people going through the motions. Just live in an area of that demographic but I can go to any club.

Don't really use it all that much, when I was at the $100+ a month upscale gym in my area (Spectrum) I went more often because the vibe of the people was better, they had more stuff to do, etc. I could stay there for quite some time and not get bored, but with LA Fitness its more in and out.

I pay nothing. I exercise in wild nature, by HIIT uphill sprinting, lifting logs, kicking tires hanged from trees, doing pullups, pushups and muscle ups. I also have dumbbells at home and lift them in various ways.

Yes, I miss a good squat/bench rack, but I am saving for a bigger apartment and then I am going to put one in my flat.

I refuse to pay for SWPL electric treadmills, when all I need at gym is a squat rack. I don't want to pay for personal trainers whom I don't use and electric appliances I don't use. I see it as another way society extracts money from men and gives it to women.

If I ever join a gym it will be boxing gym.

$20/month
Good set of powerlifting equipment, ok olympic weightlifting setup, free boxing classes.
Mostly powerlifters, a sprinkling of semi-pro athletes and retired pro-athletes. Hardly any women outside of the ones who take the classes.

$61 for one month.
Basic local gym, same equipment from the 1980's, around the corner from my house. I get a one month, but it get's cheaper obviously per month if I would get a 3 month.

Went to a similar bare bones gym in Queens for $20/month and it was better.

Free gym at my school
Squat rack + dumbbells, don't care about nothing else
Non-athlete students and maybe a faculty or two on the elliptical

$30/month is pretty reasonable for a proper gym. I would pay double that for boxing classes, the sparring kind.

$25 a month.
Three seperate floors: Machines, Cardio, Free-weights (the DUNGEON).

Dungeon floor is frequented by roided out meatheads mostly. Hardly ever will a hot chick make her way up to the third floor, usually its a gf one of the guys dragged along.

Costco 24hr fitness 2 year pass. 250 dollars for 2 years. I do a lot of compounds then top it off w/some isolations. Hit the steam room/sauna before and after each workout.

$50 / month. Athletic centre at one of the bigger universities here in Alberta.

2 power cages. 4 olympic squat racks. Higher focus on dumbbell and barbell exercises, evident in the small number of machines. Half the machines are cables. TRX straps. Kettlebells. The usual treadmills, ellipticals, stairmasters, rowing machines.

Locker room, shower, sauna, swimming pool, squash courts, basketball court. What I also like is that the staff are actually trained in doing their job, i.e. some have fitness degrees, kinesiology degrees, etc. Every time I had a question for them, they answered it without hesitation and the answer made sense as well. Not like 'trainers' in the McDonalds gyms like Goodlife.

Clientele is mostly students, but those who are very interested in fitness. This is evident in that I often see the same people whenever I go there. Very few bodybuilders here due to the lack of machines. More athletes, a few olympic lifters, some impressive power lifters.

Ratio of male to female: 60:40. Lots of hotties.

Had a fancy health club membership for when I commuted. Was super clean and I wasn't trying to get a fungal infection.

Current gym is the Mecca of Bodybuilding. Couldn't be happier.

Pro tip: If you have the spare cash, pay a year in advance. They'll usually offer a couple of months free if you do it that way.

$30/month corporate discount. I wouldn't go to my gym without it.

Lots of girls, and a few that gather the courage to come over to the weight room but no one is talking to each other.

University gym.

$135 for 8 months (insane deal, I know)
Literally everything. The gym has every type of machine, 6 squat racks (two power), 6 benches, 2 olympic platforms with bouncing weights.. I use the sauna and basketball gym too but not the pool.
University crowd mostly. A ton of jacked or varsity athlete dudes. Tons of young girls in tight yoga pants. They do the treadmill running upstairs while they watch the guys lift down below.

$185 at Equinox, have the nationwide membership and I go in 5-7 days a week. Was used to paying $200+ for Crossfit, and I ususally bought that a year in advance. My year is almost up and I am looking at a powerlifting gym nearby for $90/month. I like having one in every city I travel to for work, and dont spend a lot of money on myself so this is one of my treats. I definitely use it but could always reduce my expenses if I have better options, I just hate going into a super crowded place after work with lines.

My gym is Free* It has 6 racks, two benches, a good selection of Frees, its stocked up. A lot of tredmills and its new so a lot of broads come there to pretended to work out. We share it with Varsity so they get first dibs on the racks if they have training which can make the gym way to fuking packed with everybody fighting for one rack. Worst thing about it is that the weekend hours are shitty it opens late (12-6) and closes early.

*Its in our tuition and everybody has to pay it, even the fatties that never use it.

Also have the free gym, compliments of the University. There are two on campus, with one being a little quieter and more old-school than the other. I prefer that one because it is less busy, especially in the morning when I go. The big one also has women-only hours which differ every other day and really throw a wrench into establishing a consistent schedule if you plan to work out during the workday.

Both are pretty well-stocked for what you need. Barbells, dumbells, etc. I really prefer gyms that have a well-stocked bench or two, and both gyms have them. Only complaint is that they open at 7am. I'd be there at 6am if they had it so I'm in the office by 8.

20€/month. 2 Floors, one for the girly shit like treadmills and machines and the second with the good stuff:

2 power racks
2 squat cages
6 benches
a dip station
4 pull-up bars
lots of dumbells

= perfect gym for me. Its within 5min walking distance of my flat and open 24/7. Ratios in "my" part of the gym are pretty bad, maybe 80/20, but I dont give a shit.
