38 Million Dollar Powerball winner being sued by EX girlfriend for her share

A New Jersey man who won a $338 million Powerball jackpot, among the largest lottery winnings, is embroiled in a court fight with his former girlfriend over the money.

Pedro Quezada of Passaic was the sole winner of the Powerball drawing last spring, worth about $152 million after taxes.

His lawyer argues that Inez Sanchez has no claim to the money because the couple were never married.

But attorneys for Sanchez say Quezada purchased the ticket based on the couple's shared earnings. Sanchez and Quezada lived together for 10 years, have a child together, and shared ownership of a grocery store in Passaic, attorneys say.

Superior Court Chancery Judge Margaret Mary McVeigh refused to dismiss the lawsuit and she denied a request from Sanchez to freeze Quezada's lottery winnings, pending the outcome of a trial to determine if she is entitled to a share of the money, The Record reported Saturday.

The judge said Friday that while the couple's relationship was long-term and Sanchez contributed to the household, the court has no legal framework for restraining Quezada's assets.

Sanchez has moved out of the recently purchased Clifton home the couple shared and has filed a domestic violence claim against Quezada, The Record reported. Quezada's attorney declined to comment on that claim.

Sanchez's attorney says that a large chunk of the lottery winnings is already gone, claiming $57 million has been sent to Quezada's native Dominican Republic, $5 million was given away, $300,000 was spent on the home in Clifton, and $20 million can't be located, the newspaper reported.

Post Note:New Jersey does not have common law marriage so I think its unlikely she will get any significant share of the money since she legally is not entitled to it. Also this woman is still going to get a large ammount of child support which she can spend on whatever she wants.

Whether she gets any money or not, he'll be bankrupt in 5 years, probably less.

I can't have sex with your personality, and I can't put my penis in your college degree, and I can't shove my fist in your childhood dreams, so why are you sharing all this information with me?

His people in DR will make sure that money is safe. I'm assuming he got as much money out of America as possible to protect it.

57$ million in the DR is buying a seat at the table with the people that matter. His money will be safe.

Hopefully missing means he hid it somewhere. But I doubt that's the case.

He's not dumb if he moved his money to the DR and the other 20 million went "missing."

In fact I wouldn't be surprised if he bails out and leaves America for good. What's stopping him?

I have a feeling the judge is some kind of feminist cunt. There is no legal precedent for this case. The bottom line is that he was not married to the ex-girlfriend. Most states have eliminated common law unions. She isn't entitled to one cent of his money. If he loses this case, more reason for men not only to avoid marriage, but living with another female too.

Maybe he'll disappear and not be heard from again. She's given him reason enough, and he has the means to do so.

I still can not internalized how or why anyone would go public on their winning of a lottery of any kind. And re. common law marriage laws by state, looks like dude picked one of the right states to win the jackpot in.

NJ is very liberal and in favor of women when it comes to these issues. I think she has a good chance at getting a nice amount of money from this guy.

Maybe she deserves some, maybe not. But it certainly sounds like it's the lawyer doing the talking and trying to get some cash.

I mean, suddenly there's a domestic violence incident? If they had such a history before, was there a history of domestic violence too, or is this just a new tactic to try and get the money?

Immediately after he won, his dumbass should have immediately got her to settle for a million bucks etc. He should have made her go away permanently and legally. But he was probably greedy, and greed can bite you in these circumstances.

In NJ......that would sound about right.......

And as long as you have an endless piggy bank for the lawyers, you'll get away with it.

I think with the state run lotteries, it's public record, since it's a government run operation. The private lotteries are all done for marketing purposes (Publisher's Clearinghouse, etc) so the publicity is a condition of entering. Basically, what's the point of a lottery if nobody gets excited by seeing other people win it?

I used to say that shows like Survivor got it wrong. What they should do is give 12 people a couple million bucks each and film the results. Train wrecks make great TV.

A quick Google search tells me that lottery winner can remain anonymous in six states - South Carolina, Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, and Ohio.

While most lottery winners do end up broke, it appears, at least initially, that this guy is thinking instead of spending. That's not to say that he won't go apeshit down in the DR and end up busted, but at least his first big purchase was a house, which will always have some value even if he takes a loss on the sale of it down the line, instead of a bunch of cars, which is what the average lottery winner does.
