I thought this thread was about people getting haircuts with food stamps or haircuts taking 6% of the food stamp budget....

A 6% cut isn't the end of the world.

The GOP wants to cut the program further, so I wouldn't suspect a huge change in behavior until they cut more significantly into the program.

I love how our unemployment rate is lower than the percentage of people on food stamps

http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-s...yment-rate

Unemployment rate: 7.2%

Percent of US population on food stamps: 15%

Well not everybody on food stamps is counted in the unemployment statistics... a single person working a 30hr/week minimum wage job would qualify. A single parent working a full time minimum wage job would qualify. A 'nuclear' family with one kid and only one parents working full time minimum wage would qualify. A family with both parents working full time at minimum wage and two kids would qualify.

The more damning statistic is that 19% of the population is on disability.

The official unemployment rate (U-3) is flawed since it doesn't count the long-term unemployed and those who are underemployed.

U-6 (a more complete measure of unemployment) is 13.6%

Simply cutting welfare programs won't solve the problem. There needs to be a legitimate change in the mission of the welfare program as well as stricter requirements of what actually earns welfare money.

BLS Unemployment stats are a made up number that don't count people whom have dropped out of the job hunt entirely among other factors that would bloat the number.

Real estimates based off the real way it was counted prior to when it was adjusted is 13-16%

6% is a lot. If your feeding a family that's meals off the table gone. 70 million recieve food assistance in some shape or form. The Govt wants the dependent to get angry as its cheaper for them to club people around whom protest then it is to give them benefits.

It's just a sign of the further wealth inequality between the top 0.01% and the bottom 20%.

I'm surprised that people talk about U6 when the economy is shitty but not when the economy is doing well...

People rarely talk about U-6 mostly because they are ignorant of what U-3 (the official unemployment rate) actually measures. In the mid-1990s the definition of unemployment was changed to exclude the long-term unemployed (aka "marginally attached workers") from the official measure of unemployment to help gin up the employment stats. Also, talk of underemployment in the media and by the government ceased, even though it is just as serious of a problem.

Therefore, today the talking heads on TV talk about he unemployment rate as if it actually means something...it does not. Kosko is right: the U-3 calculated by the BLS is a made up number. It is artificially low to keep the sheep from realizing how bad the unemployment/underemployment situation really is.

Here is a chart with U-6 plotted from 1994 (the earliest date they started tracking U-6) until 2013:

http://portalseven.com/employment/unempl...oYear=2013

You will notice that as recently as 2010, U-6 was hovering near 18%.
