Which Watch Gets It Wet?

I bought a used one of these recently and have had lots of positive comments. Looks sharp when paired with a nice suit.

Careful with buying fake watches overseas from China. Most sites you buy fake watches from are outside the US, and US Customs and Border Protection will seize your shipment, and possibly fine you (if not more). I believe it is illegal to buy counterfeits on the internet and import them into the US, even if they are for personal use. Can anyone verify this?

Mixx

It's a $500 fine per item, I believe. Some folks carrying a bootleg DVD collection back from their China travels have really been screwed over big time.

Fuck knock-offs, I agree with Mixx, I know watches are expensive, but I'd rather rock a real cheap watch like a $400 ESQ Swiss, then a fake Patek Phillipe or Rolex.

I am in this camp. Watches, like shoes, should be real and high quality. That doesn't mean overtly ostentatious or gaudy but YOU should know the quality of what you are wearing.

L'Étranger knows what he is talking about - these watches are very high quality and made by highly respected independents. Who gives a shit if some dumb Miami whore doesn't know what they are? YOU do. "Watch Game" is fucking lame, Beta mainstream game anyway, any douche with cash can try and play that. Just wear one that compliments your look and gives you a feeling of pride.

That's why I prefer to buy smaller independent watchmakers, who still use an ETA as base movement, but at least don't charge more than 1000e in the end.

I cannot afford nice watches yet. I would want two - one for evening wear and another for daily use.

I have always been a fan of IWC. Swiss, hand-made, expensive, known but not overly-known. Here would be my day and night watches:

Day:

The night watch I would put a leather / croc strap on.

I've only recently started getting into automatic watches.

Dug the aesthetics of the Tissot Visodate, and being reasonably priced helps too. I've had it for about 6 months, really happy with it.

You'll all probably laugh with this, but I have the golden classic "Cassio A159WGEA-1EF Gold Digital" and I get a lot of compliments on it just because nobody wears watches anymore.

Retro. Like it.

I have a bunch of different twenty quid watches. I'd prefer a different £20 watch for every day of the year than one £7k superwatch.

This is my most recent purchase and I think it's gorgeous. Laugh away:

I've been wearing this watch for a couple of years:

Diesel - DZ4085 (Not sure if you can buy it now)

[Image: image.aspx?filename=DZ4085.jpg&width=501...olor=white]

I've had men and women asking me about it in stores and elevators. I've never seen this design on sale in the US; I bought in UK about 8 years ago.

Watches, like sunglasses, I try to acquire as gifts, since I lose/break them too often to invest $$$ in.

Client gave me a Rolex-looking ToyWatch which looks nice until you see closeup that it's plastic:

Still got people asking about it.

But now just wear my dad's old army issue field watch:

Anyone got a line on a good shop for used watches? I know where all the official stores are.

For many years, I collected classic Patek Philippe watches from the 1940 to 1965 period. I love the classic styling from that period, especially the 1950's.

A great used watch (from amongst a handful of companies) is also a great investment. You can wear the watch for years and then sell it for more than you paid -- or you can pass it on to your heirs.

Based on my experience, you will get the best bargains on ebay. Whenever I walked into a pawn shop or a high-end watch shop, I would always laugh at the asking prices. The prices were so high, I would not even try to negotiate. They ask top dollar. Just use the stores to handle the watches and determine what you like. Then buy elsewhere and use the savings on a flight to Europe.

Select a make and model that you like, determine a low-ball price, set an auto-alert on ebay, place your top bid by snipe, and let the price come to you. I never bought a watch on ebay without a $1,000 profit built into the deal. Buying in this manner is just like buying a stock or other investment. Determine the price of a good deal. Then let the price come to you.

If you buy on ebay, set about $300 aside for an overhaul from a local watchmaker. There are many scam artists on ebay, so exercise caution. The best deals come from private parties who want to unload a family heirloom or someone who needs quick money.

A rule of thumb is that a used watch in excellent condition will cost about half the price of a new one. So, a watch that retails for $12,000 and is commonly available new for $10,000 will cost about $5,000 used. So, nabbing one at $4,000 is an excellent deal. That applies to premium watch brands (Patek, Breguet, Audemars, Vacheron, Rolex, etc.). Other watches will not necessarily hold their value as well.

BTW: I hate the Rolex watch style. They are very well engineered. I would wear one if I climbed K2 or went to the moon. But IMO they are big, chunky, and bulky. They hold their value because of EXTREME marketing that has established the company in the minds of the masses as a rich man's watch. The De Beers of watches.

Rolex produces more watches in one year than Patek has manufactured since the founding of the company in the 1851. Patek holds almost all the major auction house records. During the last financial crisis, the value of Rolex watches at auction took a hit, but Patek values held. Patek Philippe has had the Calatrava line of watches in production since 1932 (different varieties).

An old adage: "A man who wants to look rich wears a Rolex. A man who is rich wears a Patek Philippe." lol

While I do recognize that Rolex is perceived as being flashy and wannabe- wealthy by many, the brand is still held in high regard by watch aficionados. Although there are certainly some knowledgeable watch-aficionados that despise Rolex, the cheap-label is often given by people that pretend to know a lot about watches, without really doing so. Vintage Rolexes are as hot as ever, and the buyers are not rappers or gangsters, but people that know and care a lot about watches.

I own a GMT-master, which I guess has a "classic" Rolex look. Nevertheless, the watch goes well on almost all occasions, especially as I travel a lot: the GMT was originally designed for pilots and frequent travelers as a way of reducing jet-lag.

For watch-newbies, check out [url=www.hodinkee.com[/url]. It's the best website dedicated to watches. Chrono24.com is probably best for buying watches online in all categories.

Tudor is Rolex's entry market brand and they just re-established operations in the US after pulling out some time ago. Similar styling and you can get in for around $4000.

To answer the OP's question, 99.9% of women don't know anything about watches, so if you want them to think you're rich and get the vaj tingles, get a used Rolex submariner or buy a fashion watch from Armani or Gucci or whatever if you really want to save money. Basically overpriced Swatches, but again, the vast majority of girls don't know any better.

The title of this thread is "which watch gets it wet". Now you can wear any watch you like to scuba dive or climb mountains. If you want to impress girls, "Rolex" is one of those magic words that attracts pussy. Like "Ferrari". Is it cheesy? Sure. But bitches only understand cheesy. You could buy a McLaren MP-4 12c, and it would outperform an Italia for less money. But explaining all that engineering and maths to a chick isn't going to get her going like simply saying "I drive a Ferrari" would.

Women don't know shit about cars or watches. They know about brands and hype. If you're running baller game, best to go with the loud noise. You can impress people with your zillion dollar Brietling aviator and your well engineered Koenigsegg super car but those people will be almost exclusively dudes.

Seiko SKX009
You can find them for under $200.
Great divers watch, plus it looks bitchin if you put a NATO strap on it. The quality is top-notch and it looks expensive too.

Actually, Rolex failed NASA's multiple pressure, moisture and shock tests during the preparation phase for the original moon landing. The only such watch that prevailed every last test they dished out was the Omega Speedmaster Professional. So no, its actually not a good watch to go to space with.

The whole Rolex myth is laughable honestly. Their achievements were impressive in the 50's. They are an overplayed record at this point and, like you mentioned, ride completely on the brand image that they have cultivated around themselves. If I had an unlimited budget, it would be the LAST watch I would consider.

I think Mido makes some absolutely beautiful watches!

According to the watch community, its a hidden secret amongst watch collectors. The price/quality is really good.

Found some discounted ones from around 1900 down to 1300. A but pricy, but I hope to buy one in not to long.
