Security footage shows the assailant waving a gun and pointing it across the aisle several times on the San Francisco-based train on Monday, each time failing to the draw the attention of any passengers.

The assailant then opened fire on a random passenger, killing 20-year-old college student Justin Valdez.

"These weren't concealed movements — the gun is very clear," District Attorney George Gascon told the San Francisco Chronicle. "These people are in very close proximity with him, and nobody sees this. They're just so engrossed, texting and reading and whatnot. They're completely oblivious of their surroundings."

Rhino's got a point. People today care so little about each other that they can be murdered in broad daylight without anyone even noticing. Our culture has hit the advanced decadence stage.

The only reason this guy got caught was because of a surveillance system - in other words, our coddled American existence was only preserved by big mommy government who watches over everyone to make sure you play nice.

On the flip side, there have always been random heroes, and there still are.

This should be more of a commentary on the people of SF. Think this would happen in a smaller city in the midwest? I doubt it.

Im convinced all those things really happened in American Psycho rather than it all being in his head but people ignored it because some Heavy Hitter Wall Street guy "couldnt do this"... and the hotel would shut down and lose everything if dead hookers were found in it, so they covered everything up....

You summed up the American Psycho message perfectly, people were too engrossed in their own worlds to notice what was happening right in front of them. Ultimate solipsism and Wall Street is the perfect setting to illustrate that.

@Samseau What interesting insight, the whole world with the aid of social media technology is turning into blind, powerless zombies that dont even notice people getting murdered right in front of us. It can only get worse, "1987" worse where we CANT function without big brother government because each of us lacks to values and convictions to stand up for ourselves, so we accept loss of freedoms as a suitable trade and endorse the NSA and other programs that limit our freedoms in exchange for "protection."

This story seems to be hyped. I looked at the video and it shows him taking something out of his pocket and putting it back again. I couldn't tell whether it was a gun or a cell phone. And not noticing it was probably the best strategy for survival. What else could they do? I remember being on the DC Metro many years ago and noticed this guy next to me and under his coat he had a python snake wrapped around his body. Nobody else noticed. I just casually got up and walked away.

Um, that article confirms what I said before.

My dad and two of my friends have CCWs. It's a process and it's not guaranteed but like I said, for anyone who really wants one it's entirely accessible, especially if you file with a sheriff's department in a rural area like Placerville.
