I had a blazer made by Narin. I used a photo of a past season Prorsum jacket that I wanted him to copy. I expected it to come out great because I can't usually buy ready to wear that fits me perfectly. It came out okay, but on the rare occasion that I wear a blazer, I still usually go for one of my ready to wear ones. Quality wise it is okay (I used a loro piana fabric, and it is made with a floating canvas), but it just doesn't compare to top end ready to wear.

If ready to wear fits you okay and you can afford the top end, then I would stay with it and just have a few minor alterations made. However MTM from a real BKK tailor (Narin, July, etc) will probably beat most mid range RTW (just make sure you spell out exactly what you want).

As for the Thais, as Rio said they don't use them much. I do have Thai friends that have trousers and shirts made for work, but other than that I've never known anyone to use them. Most of the stylish kids with money go on shopping trips to Tokyo, and other cities, because BKK is still very limited when it comes to high end fashion (Club 21 at Erawan Hotel is beginning to change this). It's a growing market though. I actually thought for a while about setting up a Thai language proxy service for luxury goods as there is such limited availability in BKK, and the customs fees make their prices extortionate. I can't be arsed though.

Having heard a lot about the fame of the HKG tailors, I was excited about that prior to my trip there so once there, I went to quite a few around where I was staying in the Jordan area in Kowloon. After going inside a few shops and talking to them and seeing the material, I noticed a similar pattern: overpriced product for about the same quality as in BKK so I passed. Now, have you been to HKG to compare the two?

Lapel tailors in HK did a nice job with a suit for me. Decent price, and it fits like a glove.
Shirts are decent, even measured cuffs 'to fit your watch better' or so they claimed.

I've given hell to the suit last 3 years and it still looks great, gets me laid now and then. Always fly wearing it, more comfortable than pijamas. Plus, as we know, you get more respect from customs and immigration everywhere.

What I normally do is to purchase a suite off the rack that fits me 85-95%. Then I have some alterations done from my tailor. Kenneth Cole and Cerutti suits are my preference and they are not "too" expensive either. When I want to splash out then I go for Zegna, love their cloth and their off the rack cut is very good.

If you have the right body type, then in my opinion picking off the rack and the doing minor tailoring is the most economical option.

I didn't go to any while in HK, and I never compared them.

Did you try random tailors while walking around, or did you do any research and pick a legitimate tailor to visit? It seems that HK has a lot of shit tailors targeting the random tourist, just as BKK does, but also has very good tailors if you know where to go.
