The law only applies to Uruguayan citizens. Foreigners with weed is still illegal.

Even then, URU citizens can only consume up to 40g a month and need to have their name on a registry....something that doesn't sit well with some people.

If they have good genetics 40g is more than enough. I go through between 14-20 of one hit wonder a month and if I'm not on the clock I'm smoking.

Good job Uruguay. You did what many countries in the world don't have balls to do. Hope its an example for other countries to follow suit.

People think that if weed was legalized that everyone would rush out and smoke up. It wouldn't happen. I wouldn't. Maybe a 10% increase in usage about current levels, but I doubt it would be much above current levels. Portugal has decriminalized all drugs and I think may have allowed possession of small amounts of marijuana and the country did not collapse. The US also had many drugs legal for a long time and still managed to survive.

The UN is already against it.

How are the women?

If I need a vacation specifically for herbal indulgences, Denver and Seattle are only a few hours flying time, and much cheaper.

Zero chance dispensaries run out of weed if they don't want to. Harvest just ended, the marker is flooded. People are sitting on hundreds of pounds all over the place. Some thousands. They will only run out if they don't have the cash to stock up on enough inventory.

I give them the number 5 spot in South America after Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela. I also think there is a pretty big gap between the first two countries I mentioned, but not so much of a gap among the other countries. Of course, some people may disagree. Overall, the forum is more pro-Colombia than I am and I seem to be more pro-Southern California than other posters. Other than that, my tastes seem to be pretty mainstream, at least compared to other forum members.

Good on Uruguay!

Cannabis as we know is a plant. The arguments the governments have against it are hypocritical. Gov'ts allow the sale of alcohol and tobacco but marijuana no. Maybe they cannot get the tax revenue as cannabis can be grown at home while making alcohol is much more tedious. We all know the drug policies aren't working. It's time to try something else.

Who am I to judge people smoking weed,,,,as long as they don't hinder my life in a negative way, go ahead and smoke it.

Actually, if legalized, usage will likely decline.

The taboo/cool factor would disappear.

No big deal. I'll be buying pot in shops in a couple weeks [Image: tongue.gif]

As to the above post, I think you're right. If you look at Amsterdam, where weed has been tolerated for a long time (it's not actually legal, but may as well be), the consumption is quite less than the consumption in America.

The first day back on my return visit to Uruguay was coincidentally the same day as the government's big vote. I wasn't keeping up with all the details on the matter, but a large gathering for that day had apparently been organized by some of the advocates (or benefactors) of legalization cause. It was just sort of there as I went walking about, so I decided to hang around and use my camera to capture some of the stuff going on. A little exercise also got added on when most of the people who gathered left the downtown plaza to march several kilometers over to the legislative palace. That is where most of the big media photos were taken. As could be expected, there was lots of weed smoking and to a lesser degree alcohol consumption. In this nation, it is also legal to enjoy your booze outside on the street. Was quite a pleasant experience.

IIRC, the law is resisted by a big part of the population, something in the range of the 60%.
