SwoopTheWorld.com [ Feedback ]

Gentlemen,

I didn't want to post this on the travel threads cause it will derail them. Fisto, 20Nation and myself have launched a new Lifestyle blog: www.SwoopTheWorld.com

I just finished the redesign of the blog. So RVF brothers, I need your help.

If anybody's interested, I'm looking for some feedback and/or comments on the website so far:

- How do you like the design?
- Is it readible?
- Is the navigation ok?
- Does it display correctly on mobile devices & tablets?
- Any ideas on interesting features to add?
- Things to remove?
- ...

Some ideas I've started to implement, but they haven't been put online yet (e.g. a lightbox to view the pictures).

Also, what are your views on the following:

- Should we continue to post pictures of girls on the site?
- What's a good way to deal with overly negative/hateful comments (remove them? leave them? respond to them?)

Cheers!

Just for context I read your site on my iPhone.

A few suggestions:

1) once you have several more articles maybe do one of those slides now things across the top where articles slide by. Just in case there are some article/posts you want to highlight. Also for a first time visitor this may be the hook articles that get then to stay. It could be that the most recent post migt not be the greatest (no offense) and they might say "this is it?" And never revisit. A slideshow would give them some top notch posts to read.

2) I'd like to see a pic every now and then. I guess the risk is everyone gets super excited and goes to Sea.

3) on my phone it is purely scroll down for navigation. At some point maybe in addition to the slider across the top. Maybe a right hand links or categories?

4) regarding neg comments. I think you should leave them. I think roosh leaves them in his rooshv.com posts and it sort of self polices. You could do what yahoo and some other places do where people vote. And if the comments are not well received they get hidden unless you click to open it. I think most have seen what I am refering to I hope. But basically not useful posts start to get hidden based on negative votes of readers. And I assume you want registered posters only which will help cut down nonsense. Maybe only allow registration on certain days or they need a referral.

If you let the morons post they will link the articles maybe to show how white knightly they were and that drives traffic. Not sure what your ad revenue model will be if any.

Gotta run hopefully not too many typos.

I like it.

I would say that http://swooptheworld.com/ is the second best domain name on the internet.

Yeah, this is a very good idea. I already prepared the space for those highlighted posts. Where currently the seminar banner is, I will put a slider with the "best of" posts.

These posts are still under construction and will be uploaded this week.

I agree, I think this will improve readability or make the articles more enjoyable.

I'm using a theme that converts the website for mobile devices automatically. I think it omits the side bar because the screens are to narrow. I've not seen the site on Tablets yet, on tablets I guess it makes sense to add the side bar again.

I will look into a plug in to vote on comments by users, this is a great idea. I want to encourage feedback by allowing everybody to post comments though indeed I expect a considerate amount of nonsense.

I'm reading up on putting on a subscriber form or going for a registration form. For users to register they will need an incentive, maybe some additional pictures / VIP section.

I really think you guys have a ton of potential with this site. After reading of your guys' adventures through SEA, I have no doubt you guys will have some great content. This Manila Seminar I see looks like a great way to build revenue. Are you guys thinking about writing and books on travel/game?

Reading through your site I have a few suggestions:

1.) As of late you guys have been posting a ton of stories. While they're entertaining, I think it is important to continue to publish quality content about game and travel. There's some good articles in there just make sure there is a good mix of content.

2.) I'm not a big fan of the formatting. This is a small detail, but I feel like the content should be shifted more towards the center of the page. It's also a bit plain. It looks like you guys have changed the formatting once, but I would keep working at it until it looks amazing. While someone like myself who is familiar with you all from these forums, people who come across your website will get hooked by a solid design.

Otherwise, I look forward to reading your site in the future.

O and yes, pics of girls please. I don't think it's tacky unless they're plastered all over the site. Sex sells! Also, I think it builds credibility when someone posts a story about a girl and then posts pics of her.

Here is some feedback, much of it is based on UX and the technical aspects.

Quote: (07-03-2013 10:55 PM)TravelHardcore Wrote:

- How do you like the design?

Design is straightforward and uncluttered, that is good. But it is by no means enticing or captivating, if that is not something you are aiming for then the design is fine.

Also your alignment is off on images right underneath the title of the article/post. Some of them are aligned to the edge of the main content area, whereas others seem to be aligned to the title.

This is probably an issue with the alignment of the container element with the image and the size of the image itself. Some are smaller in width and scale properly, whereas the others are higher width images therefore it is resulting in uneven alignment.

You are using up too much space at the top of the page with the call to action for the seminar and the definition block. The call to action is permissible, but the definition block takes up too much space and hides the content. To even see the first piece of content one has to scroll at a page length, this is not ideal.

Quote: (07-03-2013 10:55 PM)TravelHardcore Wrote:

- Is it readible?

Readability is an issue though. You have too many muted colors in the content area, which coupled with the darker background doesn't make the content itself stand out.

Maybe try using a darker color for the text, which should improve readability.

Also your use of the "Read More" seems redundant in some cases. You are displaying entire post content in the listing page, yet there is a "Read More" link below the block holding author information. You need to sort this out and display the read more only when there is further content.

Example: http://swooptheworld.com/shoring-by-plau...niability/ has no additional content apart from what is already displayed on the front page, yet features the read more link. But the read more link is available for the post http://swooptheworld.com/flashback-leavi...3-notches/ which actually does have further content.

A good rule of thumb is to only display an excerpt on any listing page and not the entire content of the post, similar to http://www.returnofkings.com/. This saves on real estate space and provides maximum content on any given page (this is good for a lot of reasons).

Again, remember content is king for websites of this sort so you want that to be the hero. Right now your main image below the title on the listing page is taking up too much real estate. Try using a smaller image and float it to the left or right alongside the excerpt of the post. On the single post display page, having the bigger image is fine.

Quote: (07-03-2013 10:55 PM)TravelHardcore Wrote:

- Is the navigation ok?

There isn't much of navigation to speak off honestly, which is a slight drawback. For example if you are reading a post and wish to go elsewhere there is currently no way to do that except for scrolling all the way to the top of the page manually.

Maybe you can try and add a floating "Back to the top" navigation element or even make the header area fixed and visible always. This would provide with the ability to navigate to other part of the site without the necessary scrolling.

Having the search on the sidebar also create a problem with it being accessible only when you are viewing that section of the page, so maybe along with making the header visible always you can move your search to the header area.

Your lightbox/image display modals are screwed up. There is no real navigation visible, and the popup modal only responds to the "Escape" key being pressed. Ideally clicking anywhere outside of the image should close the modal display. I realize this might not be a complete feature, but it definitely needs more attention.

Quote: (07-03-2013 10:55 PM)TravelHardcore Wrote:

- Does it display correctly on mobile devices & tablets?

Haven't been able to check it on mobile devices, will check it out later and provide feedback then.

Quote: (07-03-2013 10:55 PM)TravelHardcore Wrote:

- Any ideas on interesting features to add?

I see that you are running WordPress as the back-end, so maybe things like "Related Posts" being displayed at the bottom of individual post page are things that might be of benefit.

That is pretty much what I could muster up from a brief go through, hope the feedback is helpful.

I like the site. I agree with above that some game info, data sheets, etc. would be a good addition.

I personally don't like black backgrounds and red fonts. It is hard on the eyes.

Definitely start capturing emails. This is super important for marketing your products once they are finished. Also your game seminars and such.

Yeah, a lot of fine tuning and tweaking will be needed to get the design to be SOLID. Thanks for your feedback Seth.

It is actually always aligning to the left (title) and it resizes the 'featured image' automatically. So if the picture is large enough it takes up the whole width of the content area, if not you can see it's aligned to the left.

This is the out-of-the-box functionality of the theme I purchased. I'm just beginning the experiment with Wordpress so I have no idea on how to make those images resize to a fixed width yet.

Or maybe I should omit the definition block all together.

I just made this adjustment, in stead of a black background I put a dark grey and I changed the font color to black. Also I changed the red links to a darker shade of red, but I think they still stand out enough right now.

I completely agree and that's the thing that's been bothering me as well. I think it's a limitation of the theme I'm using. It always shows the READ MORE button and it doesn't allow me to use excerpts. I can only insert the "read more"-break line that I have to insert manually into the posts.

What I would like to do is have the homepage only display the excerpt of posts, which I can put in the "edit/new post" page with a small image and then a bigger on the single post display.

But this goes beyond my wordpress skills... I don't have the slightest idea on how to start customizing to that extend. I think I will have to put on a new theme that offers this kind of layout for that...

I think the floating "back to top" button is a good idea. I will look if I can find the right plugin for that.

Regarding navigation I'm considering to add some fixed pages per category that just show an index of all posts withing that category. Rather then the links that show a list of all posts of that category (as it is right now). However, it may already improve when only the excerpts would be shown.

I've just added the "Index per category" in the menu.

I can look into that. Right now the search is not being used at all, but that may become the case when the website gets older and has more content in there.

Do you have any idea on what light boxes offer this?

Another thing that bothers me about this theme is that it displays the content in a very narrow way on an IPhone. Much space is wasted showing part of the black background of both sides (not needed!) plus the huge padding of the main content area.

Also the comments, especially when nested are not displayed properly I've found out. Nobody's commented on that so far but I worry this is impacting the usability of the website right now.

I'm on the fence right now to either continue tweaking this or completely change the theme I'm using.

Your feedback has been very helpful, much appreciated! I still need a lot of work getting things set up right. I'm working on some of your suggestions right now.

I've already added the new colors, the menu in the side bar.

Further to-do list:
-------------------

- Adding a subscription / optin box to capture emails. For this I'm using Hybrid-Connect
- Add a comment rating system so comments can be closed after to many negative votes
- Post rating system open to anyone to get a most popular post widget going

If you know a little bit of CSS, you should be able to get this sorted out in a few seconds actually.

I am not sure how proficient you are in PHP, HTML & CSS. All you essentially need to do is:

- Set a left padding of 20px on the container displaying the image below the title ( CSS Selector is div.post-thumbnail )
- Decrease the image size from 640 pixel to 620 px or below.

But you will need to know a little bit of PHP, not much since you will only have to change a single line and that should take care of it.

I have never been a big fan of the plugin you are using, although it is quite popular and a lot of people use it.

Most of the times, if I decide to use a plugin for any client work or projects, I prefer http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-simple-galleries/

It is a much smaller, and cleaner plugin and it offers enough features which should be ample for your needs. The above also comes with a much nicer colorbox/lightbox solution by default and also has the flexibility to use other solutions if you should choose so, but it will not be required in most cases.

Try out a few plugins before you settle on one.

If the theme by itself is not supporting mobile platforms properly, I think it might be wise to switch to a better base theme altogether.

Or the other option is to deploy a plugin which will make the site more compatible for mobile devices. I cannot place the names from the top of my head, but a simple search on Google should give you the available options as well as reviews on how well they work etc.

If you have any specific questions or need some technical help, drop me a note and I will try help out. I have been dealing with WordPress for over 7 years now, so most of the things are extremely trivial for me :-)

Hmm, I would have to rethink the concept as the most part of the BG image would be hidden by the content unless it's a like a repeating pattern. I'll try some few ideas later.

Thanks. Yeah, maybe I put it back in the side bar, though it does not offer much added value. I just put it as part of the theme to begin with.

Ok... I'm also gonna give that a shot. I hope that it replaces it by the first X characters of the post automatically if an excerpt is missing etc.

One of the default settings of the them was showing the first X characters but all text mark up and line breaks were lost so it looked crappy. That's why I changed it to show the full post.

This is great! I really dislike the NextGen plugin actually as it forces you to add all pictures seperately in the NextGen galleries and I think it's a hassle.

This plug in you suggest works great! I've used it as a test in "Online Jakarta Shore" post. It looks really nice.

Only thing is it doesn't offer multiple galleries per post and also inserting single images is not possible. They still open the usual way.

Do you know of a similar plug in for the single images in posts?

If the theme by itself is not supporting mobile platforms properly, I think it might be wise to switch to a better base theme altogether.

Or the other option is to deploy a plugin which will make the site more compatible for mobile devices. I cannot place the names from the top of my head, but a simple search on Google should give you the available options as well as reviews on how well they work etc.

I tested a few today. But not having the expected results. I tried testing them but when I clicked back to normal website I can't get it to load the mobile website again. And since Fisto's phone got lost again I can't check there either : )

If you have any specific questions or need some technical help, drop me a note and I will try help out. I have been dealing with WordPress for over 7 years now, so most of the things are extremely trivial for me :-)

Yeah, I really appreciate your feedback. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

- Could you give some technical assistence for removing the read more buttons when not required? I think that's related to the excerpt problem.

- Could you recommend a theme that's good for mobile devices and matches with the current setup? The theme I'm using was praised for being a "RESPONSIVE THEME"... so it's weird I'm running into these mobile problems.

- If you know of some other must-have plug ins (for mobile) or for Comments improvements, rating of posts, the light box for single images, or something I haven't even thought of that a lot of your clients use...

I have very basic experience... this is the 2nd time I set up a wordpress website. So everything I try to do takes me about a day to figure out.

You don't actually need any plugins to handle single images in posts. You should be able to do that just by using the core WordPress media inserts within the post.

When you have multiple images, then it makes sense to use a plugin although in the future even this may become deprecated since WordPress has started supporting post galleries as well in it latest versions.

So not sure why you are having trouble with single images within the content of the post. Maybe you can explain a bit more as to what you are having trouble with?

Thanks Skulled I was able to fix a lot of issues today. A few problems I was not able to figure out, will send you a PM

I'm now running into a problem with the Hybrid Connect subscription plug in... If a user subscribes he will get an email from my AutoResponder provider (mailchimp cause it's free) but also one from Wordpress sending out a password. I don't see why that would be needed but I can't disable it. If anyone has any experience on this, any help is appreciated.
