I mainly scoped out some bars, problem seems to be that people just sit around and drink, no mixing. Got to find some clubs.
I dunno, my experience in China is that it's not much of a bar/club culture. Maybe it has to do with how so many people of Oriental descent (Chinese/Korean/Japanese) can't hold their liquor due to inability to metabolize alcohol (it's genetic).
In the last city I visited, I was staying at a hotel pretty close to a bunch of university dormitories. I went walking around there on a Friday night (it was like a big outdoor mall) and was shocked to see no one was out drinking. All the cafes were full, and plenty of people hanging around in the plazas outside, but everyone was drinking juice, tea, etc. There was basically
one proper "bar" in the whole place, and it had about 5 tables. I stopped in there, and of the people in there, fewer than half were drinking alcohol. Of course, I fit quickly into the stereotype that foreigners like to drink when I ordered a double-vodka cocktail.
Now expat bars are a different story. The ones I went to were like half expats, and half the Chinese girls who go for that type. On the plus side, you're likely to find lots of the Chinese girls there can speak Chinese. On the minus side, you may find some of the girls were like the town bicycle (everyone's had a ride) since it's a smaller circle and they probably jump from one
laowai to the next.
I'm due to travel to China again later this year, and the easiest routing for where I'm headed (mid-tier Chinese city) is via Shanghai. I've heard the women are quite stuck up, but I've also never been there and would like to just look around anyway. I'll probably spend a few days there before heading to my final destination.
