RIP Margaret Thatcher

It is strange but the English are the least patriotic people in the world. Culturally - we are practically a 'post-nation'. The only creed we have now is 'diversity' and ensuring that immigrants feel as welcome as possible to our country. As English person myself thast is fine by me. I don't give a shit about issues surrounding patriotism. Life is too short. And to be proud of which country you were randomly born into is like being proud that you own a pair of shoes.

Hell - in England you are practically a pariah if you wave the English flag and say you are proud to English. Not only that - England doesn't even have a national anthem.

So - I can assure anyone here. English people are more than happy to admit any (and all) faults to do with the imperialistic adventures of the past. And - as well as not giving a shit about Northern Ireland. Most English people just want to see peace over there in a way which is lasting and sustainable. Indeed - English people revel in admitting any faults to do with ourselves. We enjoy being gloomy about ourselves.

Most English people care more about the horse they bet on in the Grand National at the weekend - than they do about whether or not Northern Ireland remains a part of The United Kingdom. It is a non-issue over here.

So what would you call the UK and USA, who have attacked other countries for centuries!

I didn't realize Northern Ireland was a Catholic homeland and South Africa was a Black homeland. Last I checked, the Protestants made up the majority in Northern Ireland(who have consistently said they want to remain part of the UK), and the Boers founded the nation of South Africa and created a thriving first world society out of it.

Excuse me they "founded" the nation. lol
Don't you mean they invaded this region that already had people living there, otherwise known as "natives". (Zulu's etc)
They did found the nation, no country existed prior to the European arrival, rather groups of semi-nomadic tribes with no sense of nationhood, or property for that matter. In fact, most blacks in South africa are of a Bantu lineage, their ancestors did no arrive in South Africa until after the Europeans sometime in the 17th century.

Yep that much is true, I'd say the patriotism around being English, died at the end of the Civil War. People were more patriotic about being British than being English.

Any mention of WWII will bring out some degree of general patriotism I'd imagine. Praising Churchill and that generation is still one of the things that'll unite most people in appreciation and vague national pride (and rightly really).

On the right patriotism still exists. The reaction to Maggie's death is a clear indication of that, but the claim she made 'Britain great again' is hollow as no one but Cameron and the right cares about Britain being considered 'great'. Having Britain actually functioning today would be a better way to gain support - rather than pandering to 80's nostalgia for the supposed good 'ole days (of class war, unemployment, pinstripes, red braces, yellow three wheel vans and fighting for an island no one gave a shit about)

That's true with men too. Fuck, it's even more embarrassing with a man with zero qualifications and is decidedly anti-exceptional somehow becomes president.

The man I'm thinking of, his name rhymes with "Tush"

Say what you will about Bush but the man can fly fighter jets, can throw a baseball past home plate like a man , actually ran a successful business, can ride horses, shoot well, and has a pretty wife. None of which obama can or ever will be able to do.
I'd rather have a beer with the guy thats more of a real man any day.

Contrast that with the only success in the obama administration is the continuing of certain Bush policies and im wondering what has the poster boy for empty suit done that has guys like you still acting like Obamas ever accomplished anything.

What do any of those qualities have to do with being President?

Yeah, George always seemed like a cool good 'ol boy, but he has been a puppet since his days as governor.

He started his first company with seed money from his trust fund. It would have went under, except that he sold it and became CEO of the new company, which began losing revenue steadily. That company than merged with Harken and Bush was made a director.

When Bush was with Harken he was investigated for insider trading by the SEC. The SEC is not authorized to release the results of the investigation.

And he traded Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez.

Not exactly what I would call a brilliant businessman.

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.

What's important to note for all of us free market advocates is that Margaret Thatcher is that Margaret Thatcher was only pro-free market when it served her and her corporate friends.

I still remember her one and only nationalization of a British company, her husband's oil company which was going bankrupt because it sucked.

She's a hypocrite. I shed no tears.

And let's not forget, Bush the Lesser only flew fighter jets in peacetime situations. And the group he flew in was known as the "Champagne Squadron" which was a group of rich kids and a few NFL players who had the financial backing along with political influence to secure their entry.

When I was younger I would have said something like "I don't like to speak ill of the dead." But fuck that. Fuck Thatcher. Hopefully she's burning in hell alongside Reagan and Ayn Rand.

Interesting concept.

As I predicted, the ring leader of the protests against Thatcher is a very middle class leftist:

Not sure what you are trying to say, but Africans were living in South Africa long before Europeans arrived on the scene.

I think he's talking about the fact that western South Africa (Capetown) was largely uninhabited and when the dutch colonized it they started encountering native resistance only once the dutch expanded eastwards meeting the southwesternmigrating Xhosa that resulted in conflicts (Cape Frontier Wars).

Just playing devil's advocate here.

lol at all of the British people in here. Thatcher's economic policies were very strong and moved the UK away from backwards social and the state owning the means of production to a capitalist free market system. The irony of your criticism is that you will be posting your comments from ipads, dells etc. which you only have as the product of free market capitalism and the wealth afforded to you b these economic policies.

Anyone celebrating Thatcher's death is 1. classless (celebrating the death of someone is just weird) 2. stupid (if it were not for her policies the UK would be like Greece).

Many are allowing emotion to override the fiscal logic of what you are pointing out. It's the male hamster in action.

That said, her policies did have a really bad effect on the personal lives of certain sections of the population. I think it is a case of breaking some eggs to make an omelette. Tyler Durden said it best.

You know, what really gets under my skin?

When someone has the goddamn nerve to say something like "I hope x person is burning in hell" when some people clearly hold that person in high regard.

That means the person saying it doesn't have an ounce of respect for those people that don't feel the same way. In fact, it's pretty clear that the person saying that believes that the people that agree with the target of their animosity can burn in hell too.

I mean, if someone actually said that to me in real life I might beat the fuck out of them just by bitch slapping them down until they were unconscious.

Anyway, to address a guy that isn't a condescending prick, Renotime, I'm not saying that they are qualities that necessarily make a better president, I'm saying they're things I can respect as a man. I think that, on some level, it's better to have SOME kind of skill than none at all.

Ha, I thought exactly the same: 'male hamsterism'.

These peoples industries/jobs would have gone in the end. Except this way it allowed the UK to become somewhat prosperous, whereas the alternative would have been something close to bankruptsy.

Still it's funny watching these hippys act crazy. What they don't realise is that they're just making people who wouldn't care otherwise think they're crazy.

Maybe not, but putting Thatcher in the same category as those guys is a misrepresentation no matter how you look at it.

And talking about Reagan and Ayn Rand that way, who are two people I hold in high esteem, is a personal insult to anyone who feels as I do about them.

I make allowances for my doubts, and I try to talk to people in a strait forward manner the way I would prefer people speak to me. I also try and act respectful until someone is disrepectful to me.

The comment I'm talking about was out of line.

So where do we draw the line to who deserves respect? Genocide? Raping children? Lies and dirty police-work controlled from the very top of the government causing grief for the relatives left behind (Hillsborough) etc. ? She was a class A cunt, not because of her political beliefs (in my opinion)...but for her misuse of power. That puts her in the catagory of Hitler, Pol Pot and Stalin without a doubt. People dragging Reagan into the same catagory does it beacuse they disagree with his politics, and that`s out of order. At least Reagan made decision from his own political conviction, not a personal agenda against certain fellow citizens.
