I know, seriously right? You would think the ubiquity of porn would get rid of white-knight mentality.
Porn reducing white knights, oneitis, and putting girls on a pedestal???
I don't know.
I think, for alot of guys, PORN/MASTURBATION IS A SUBSTITUTE FOR SEX.
They don't want to work on their game. They don't want to improve their diet. They don't want to workout. They don't want to upgrade their wardrobe. They don't want to improve their conversational skills and sense of humor. It's too much work.
It's easier to jerk off.
I don't know if porn helps players or hurts players. I guess it depends how you use it.
Yes, it varies depending on the guy.
Does porn/masturbation provide a good substitute for sex? Sure, I won't say I've never used it in such a way. When sex is not available, masturbation is a solid option to have. Even when sex is available, rubbing one out prior to departure can be useful for tempering neediness and other potential pitfalls during your discourse with girls.
At the same time, however, I've been able to watch plenty of porn and still make vast improvements to my diet, my wardrobe, my physique and my general conversational skill. I've made all of these upgrades during my 3-4 years so far in college.
I began freshman year at 5'10, 240lbs. I was fit enough to be on the football team, but I was carrying plenty of baby fat. Now I'm down to 200-205lbs, and have a much more toned body with (for the first time in my life) visible abs. Most of this change is due to an improved diet-I went from eating 2/3 burgers with fries at lunch to ordering 5 or 6 egg-whites and/or some salmon and grilled chicken instead.
I began college wearing clothes that were too big for me, and also sporting boring t-shirts and jeans of low quality. Now I wear polos, fleeces, thermals and henley's that actually fit me. Combine the better clothing with the improved fit and my improved physique, and I look about 1 million times better than I did first stepping onto campus.
In every way I am better than I was before, and this is in spite of my watching PLENTY of porn.
Porn/masturbation can be a useful supplement to self-improvement if you know how to use it and have the discipline to use it properly. If you can just hold on to the fact that porn, in the long term, can never be a satisfactory substitute for actual/substantive mental and physical forms of self-improvement, then you can make it work for you.
I was able to push myself to make these improvements because I never lost sight of the fact that porn is not real, and I have never truly been satisfied with it. It provides short-term gratification that will never amount to a replacement for real, long term self-improvement, and the experience can't match what you can have with a real woman. If you keep that understanding in mind and also focus more on porn that doesn't promote fantasy (ex: watch more amateur porn with real girls instead of Vivid/Brazzers work with plastic blondes doing unrealistically kinky things), you'll be ok. Really.
The question is: how many guys can do this? I'm sure many cannot, and for them nofap makes sense.

^ This is why the nofap guys have a point.
It DOES decrease motivation and it is an easy way out. If porn was blocked on the internet for a month, the women of this world wouldn't know what had hit them. In fact, I'd love it to happen just to see the Jezebel article.
You'd just have a larger mass of thirsty dudes running around and an uptick in the number of sausagefests. Plain/average girls would see a rise in the number of approaches they receive and thus an increase in their practical sexual market value.
I do not see how this would be beneficial to anyone but the women, who already receive more validation/ego boosts/attention than they know what to do with and would only be getting more in this scenario.
