This Pistorius case makes me question how we deal with " heroes" these days. Dude shot his girlfriend four times while she closed herself up in the toilet. My question is: HOW BETA IS SHOOTING AN UNARMED WOMAN IN A TOILET?

I have no doubts this dude was in many ways jealous of his GF, jealousy is of course another feature of the Beta.

When I see pics of Steenkamp, I cannot but wonder what a waste it was to leave this babe in the hands of this "hero".

My conclusion is that one can be Alpha on a physical level (athlete), but Beta (if not omega) on a spiritual/psychological level.

You know what's really beta? Doing 25 to life in a South African prison for a woman. Those prosthetic legs need constant maintenance, repair, and eventually replacement. Bottom line, Pistoriu's explanation for what happened simply isn't going to match up with the evidence. I love to know exactly what was going through his head, but we'll probably never really know for sure. This rings of a crime of passion, not mistaking someone for an intruder.

Local press report that a blood sample was taken from him and, apart from obviously being tested for alcohol and recreational drugs, will also be tested for steroids since steroids were found in his house. For now he is getting special treatment and is being held in a cell at a police station. It seems he will be transferred to a regular prison, likely Pretoria Central Prison, Wednesday or Thursday.

It REALLY doesn't look good for him. The prosecutor is apparently the toughest in the country and has taken down people far higher up the food chain than Pistorius. e.g. An ex head of Interpol connected at the highest political levels in the country. Pistorius' legal team includes a high profile "Spin Doctor" from the UK Stuart Higgins. Ex editor of the Sun tabloid. Maybe the lawyers on the board can explain why rich obviously guilty as shit defendants are hiring media specialists these days? In SA there are no juries. The judge acts as judge and jury so I don't see how media spin is going to affect the outcome of the case. These spin doctors are more used to generating inane gossip fodor, not dealing with serious issues like murder charges. Anyway, I doubt this guy has more than a couple million dollars in assets max. Will he be able to last until the trial at the kind of expenditures his team must be racking up?

For what it's worth I don't think he deserves bail. Even in the spectacularly unlikely event that his story about believing she was an intruder was true, he STILL faces many years in jail. Self defense only allows you deal with an immediate threat, not blast randomly through a bathroom door. If there actually WAS an intruder there, he would STILL be facing jail time.

It's too bad, because so many people respected and looked up to him (I know the hero worship problem), but he really is toast.

I don't think 'roid rage is a myth, but EVERYONE doesn't automatically have the drastic behavioral changes that some might. Steroids increase testosterone, and hormones effect behavior (aggression). Some may definitely be more susceptible to this kind of effect.

Here's a question for everyone? Let's say you're rich, not unlimited resources rich, but a couple million in assets rich, and you do something stupid where you're facing serious jail time. Do you gamble everything on a chance to get off? I wonder if it's not better to cop a plea right away on favorable terms.

This is assuming that you know you did it and that you're probably going I get convicted anyway. Is it better to bank most of your money, hire a good attorney, an negotiate a deal that gets you the lowest prison sentence in the prison with the best conditions possible? If you're worth two million, you could exhaust all your resources and maybe you'll get off, but not likely. Going away for ten or fifteen years sucks, but it's better than twenty-five or more. And if you spent just enough money on your defense to negotiate a deal, then you've got a bunch of cash to sock away for your release. You probably need some money to hire protection and grease whomever to make life bearable inside, but even a million sitting outside collecting 5 percent gives you something decent to look forward to when you get out.

By the way, for Pistorius sake, I hope he doesn't end up anywhere near the "face to face" guy.

Speaking of prison, one form of white knighting which has always amused me is the justice meted out by other inmates on men who've abused, raped, or killed women. Even cold-blooded murderers looking at a lifetime behind bars can feel compelled to man up and be chivalrous.

Even criminals have women and children that they love, and would kill to protect. So yeah, the hierarchy within prison is an interesting dynamic. Chris Benoit? After he killed his family and killed himself I belived he left a note detailing loosely he wanted to be examined (thus why he hung himself, instead of shooting). His brain reviled a shit ton of damage, and him along with other wrestlers probably are the largest closed group of avid PED/Steroid users around.
