I never got the whole whiskey thing, all my life I just didn't get it. That is until a good friend of mine introduced me to good whiskey on the rocks.

Currently feeling very blue but have also enjoyed the top shelf Jameson.

Anyways you get the idea, that's from the last month or so [Image: wink.gif]

Respect man, that right there is more than my mortgage. One day to be able to drink that everyday.......

I owe it to the forum, as much as myself, that I can now (generally) drink what i want when i want. With out improved game and much improved frame I would not be where I am today.

On a more serious note, it really is rather nice to have a whiskey or two when i get home at night after a long hard day. I generally only have one or two, on ice, as I unwind from the working day.

Other ones that I have tried and liked as (in no particular order)

Johnny Black ( easy to get and cheap)
Johny Double Black ( kinda smokey yet nice)
Chivas Regal Gold whatever they call it
Jameson Middleton Very Rare ( exxy but very very nice)

The Jameson and Blue are my favs so far but do the most wallet damage. Typical.

Looking forward to sampling the rest of what life has to offer in this area slowly yet surely. Sadly the as I drink better whiskey , I can no longer drink cheap stuff unless already on my way to being tanked. Its a bit like driving a nice car then going back to a shitbox, its painful.

I recently purchased a Chivas Regal 12 year (it was cheap enough). Haven't tried it yet as I need to be in the mood to drink Whisky. Once I finish with this I'm going to fork out for a Haig Club. They are retailing at £45 atm for 70cl. I recently went to the old Jameson distillery Dublin a few weeks ago and now the proud owner of an "official Jameson taste tester" certificate.

I'm kind of gutted that I was too hangover to visit the Milton distilleries just outside Cork but I guess that gives me incentive to go back. Fortunately it not that far to travel to Scotland and visit distillers there.

Great bump.

For those that might be looking for some ideas on what current expressions have been particularly good in the past year, the results from the San Francisco Spirits Competition were recently released.

Cliff notes:

Angels Envy Rye...I said RYE, not Bourbon.

Goddammit I love me some brown liquor.

My drink of choice is Maker's Mark, but I also enjoy Wild Turkey, Tullamore Dew, and Bulleit.

I actually want to get into distilling my own before the end of the year. I got a 2-liter mini aging barrel for Christmas and am looking to get my hands on an easy DIY home distiller's kit.

Tullimore DEW is my absolute go to for Irish Whiskey.

Home distilling is a lot of fun. I sometimes do a custom bottling night when friends come over, where we take the basic spirit and add flavors as the person wants to make their very own 100% original Whiskey to take home.

Yeah the barrel I got came with that flavoring stuff. Doesn't seem authentic enough to me. I actually want to make my own mash.

I got one of those barrels last year too, been running Kentucky deluxe and other cheap blended whiskies through it. The results are great but I left the last batch in for six months and never turned the barrel weekly so lost half of it to angel's share.

Keep in mind those mini-barrels are not going to give similar results to the full sized bourbon barrels or sherry butts used by real distilleries. Tiny barrels just oak the fuck out of everything. There are more factors to aging than just oak extraction that these small barrels can't reproduce.

They work well for short maturations of cocktails though, try tossing a Boulevardier or something in one for a couple weeks.

They can also sort of improve absolute rotgut by simply oak flavoring it, but that's just covering up poor distillate using added vanillins as flavoring.

I'll be in Glasgow for The Whisky Show's Old & Rare Show next February if anyone wants to join, or meet up for a few drams in Glasgow outside the show. I'll also likely be hitting up Edinburgh, and passing through Islay, Sutherland, etc for whisky related stuff.
