Can you rent some store space in town and sell things to Miners with a whole bunch of money and not enough sense?

Pitbull Puppies?
MMA equipment?
GUNS
Comic Books
Gym Shoes?

Wouldn't it be better to make 5K a week moving everyday products to people that want them NOW, than spending your time and and putting your life/health at risk?

Do BOTH! Raise your capital from working the mines, and then branch off to other businesses. Just 'cause you start in the mines doesn't mean you have to stay in the mines.

Selling pit bull pups and guns out of a store space in a mining town? Good luck with that mate. [Image: smile.gif]

If they want to buy a dog (and I know this from experience), they'll usually go to a registered breeder or shelter where they know they'll be micro-chipped, spayed and neutered. Australians love their dogs, no doubts about that. So I'm not sure they'd take too kindly to an out-of-towner coming in and trying to flog them puppies out of a lock-up to be honest.
As for guns, they usually go to a licensed gun dealer for them, so you might be out of luck there too.
Comic books and gym shoes? Well, you could always go around the bars and and try your luck I suppose - if you're a good salesman that is. Personally I wouldn't fancy trying to sell anything to a tired Aussie miner when he's having a few beers after work - especially gym shoes.

A friend of mine just landed in the OZ. He's banking $175K for a 3/3 schedule. That's low for our skill set. After a year he'll bounce to another company for bigger pay. The process took him months, which is why I've been dragging my feet.

Fuck. Yeah. May I ask exactly what skillset? Or what general field?

Mid-May-ish, I'm gonna bust out a serious data sheet on working in Oz, for guys with the experience/skill set, the place is a gold mine.

My friend went through more of a background investigation for a shitty mechanic job than getting a clearance for our gov. That was a big turnoff for me. He needed 2 certified letters from 2 managers from EVERY job he has worked in the last 7 years. There was much more. Uncle Sam don't ask for that stupid shit, and you know they invented the hoop system. If it's that hard to get down there for Americans, let them get desperate and hire sewer divers from India. I'll work in other regions.

Sudden bump a few years later sorry:
Is there still demand for such jobs there? I get the feeling incomes have waned since 2013 but that could be an incorrect idea

The "mining boom" is over in Oz.

Commodity prices have plummeted and the huge new projects have come online, which means a glut of coal, iron ore and minerals.

The mining job market is still there, still pays well, but its much more competitive.

I get work through the network and people you know, and worked for in the past. Its real hard to break into.

The government is trying to open the labour market up to cheap Chinese labour with a free trade deal, so it looks like the party's over. It was a great party though.

For a moment I thought Scotian had left canada to Australia in search of greener pastures and busted out a fresh data sheet.

It's a tough gig. I worked on rigs in Europe years ago and it's pretty much what I imagine being a MGTOW would be like.

I've had mates work in the Western Australian mines and for 6 months it's more or less torture: Especially at entry level. You have a room. You have no form of entertainment. You have no women.

The plus: You have no entertainment so you don't spend your money. You have free accommodation so you save all your profits. The food is actually decent. There is virtually zero feminism.

I was able to break into the property industry after my rigging work. If you can get job the best question to ask yourself is this:

"Am I willing to sacrifice two years of my life for location independence?"

Why? Because after two years you should be able to buy a high quality single bedroom apartment outright in most places globally.

After a few years if you really want to make some cash: Rigs on the Nigerian Delta lol. If you're willing to risk kidnapping you'll be earning 20k per month. My uncle who's a crazy sob did this for two years. He was kidnapped in his first week. Turns out most of the kidnappers are university educated engineers who can't get work due to a corrupt government. Eventually after they kidnapped him for a third time he paid the kidnappers to be his chauffeur. Now he has no problems [Except for the fact that he gets paid in cash and there is nowhere to bank his money].

You won't get a second look if you have a working holiday visa. If you are overseas right now and you don't have residency the only chance of you getting a job in the Australian mining industry, which might I add is laying off people, is if you have a very in demand skill.

Ah, really killed my hopes. I was aiming to possibly take a 6-month break from college to work in some manual labor in Australia.

On a related note, this means that along with the end of Canadian Oil Sands, there is no more regions with resource booms anymore. I'll be reconsidering my 6-month break possibly

Well, that post was in Dec of 2013 so it is quite a bit outdated.

I know oil is absolutely terrible right now but I know of three people who have gotten $20-$30 an hour jobs within Edmonton over the last two weeks that only took a few hours to find. All of these jobs are over 50 hours a week. I know its not crazy money but its still enough to travel a few months every year while waiting out the oil slump.

Absolutely. However, working holiday visa holders never had a chance anyway. It is the dumbest fucking visa that funnels backpackers into cold-calling, approach, cash. low-paid farm jobs and, along with Asians on student visas, basically fucks the hospitality industry in most major cities.
