I'd go with BJJ and Muay Thai. I'm a little biased though because those are my 2 main arts.

To be honest, start with BJJ and only do that for a while. Make sure you can handle the training for that first. You don't want to overwhelm yourself by training too much.

Like other people have said, you're too worried about getting into shape before starting. Stop procrastinating and just do it. No matter what shape you are in, you will never be in shape forward BJJ until you do BJJ. It is a different type of cardio and you WILL lose weight doing it.

I'd also look into more than just the "UFC" gyms. I'm sure there are others in your area that are good as well.

Where are you at and I can maybe recommend some gyms for you to check out.

You may go to the UFC gym and not care for the teacher and the group of students. If you aren't comfortable where you are you will not train to your ability.

In Dallas, I trained at a gym and that whole group was like a 2nd family to me. When I moved to Pittsburgh, I went to a couple of the gyms, and while I liked the coaches, I never got that "family" feel and it turned me off of training. I quit because I couldn't find somewhere I was accepted.

When I move back to Dallas, I'm joining back up at my original gym and getting back with the fam.

Hope this helps you out.

How am I procrastinating and I asked a simple question? You guys are funny. My reason for waiting a week or two is as I stated above im new to this gym. I really dont know anybody in there. Im talking to members coaches etc getting feedback then I will make my decision. Im not going to jump in anybodys class and go for the gusto blind. That makes no sense. Its not about losing some weight then jumping in the class, maybe you guys took the context of my question wrong. Of course I will lose weight soon as I start training muscle confusion. Like you said your coach and make you or brake you so that is my reason. Thanks for the info

If you're not procrastinating then what you really need to do is find some gyms in your area and try them out. Most if not all gyms will let you try the classes out before you sign up and pay for anything. If you're in California there will be many gyms to choose from. You can do as much talking as you want, but you will not know where you want to train just from talking. We're not here to attack you, were here to help. A lot of guys here have experience and do know names in the business, and what to look out for. Lots of Mcdojos in the country.

Sorry Prestige, but from your attitude here I doubt you'll last two weeks training. If you're getting this defensive from guys who are answering your questions and trying to help you on a forum, I can't imagine how you'll react when you start getting folded up into pretzels by guys half your size and taking punches to the dome. It's a real blow to the ego at first and it doesn't seem like you can handle it based on how thin skinned you come across.

Actually, I can imagine how you'll react, because I've seen it before. You'll get pouty and walk out the door, never to return.

But maybe I'm wrong. Good luck!

If you're in Concord, don't even fuck with the UFC gym. Go straight to Cesar Gracie's in Plesant Hill, or one of the other dozen legitimate gyms in the area. Just go in and take a free trial class because you ARE procrastinating. Go to a few gyms, do the free trial, and make your decision. It makes no sense to wait two weeks because "you don't know anyone". The best way to get to know people in a gym is to GO to the gym and train.

I wasn't trying to rag on you before, but now I am. You sound exactly like the dozens of other people who tell me they are going to start training, but never do. I would be more than happy to give you legitimate advice, but so far it's falling on def ears.

Saying you're going to lose 17 lbs "first" is procrastinating.

These guys did answer your questions.

If you don't want someone to comment on the other things you mentioned. DON'T MENTION THEM.

Also, agree with Rio, if you have access to Cesar Gracie's and you want to learn BJJ you should go there.

Rio is correct.
If you can get over to Cesars do it. He'll be a bit more expensive but you will train with some of the best fighters in MMA today.

Ha.

You have to love the irony of a guy starting an MMA thread and he ended up getting grounded and pounded by the regular forum members for his attitude.

Is that the ceasar gracie gym that the diaz bros, gilbert melendez, and jake shields fight out of? if so, that'd the choice right there.

but this guy will likely not ever even make it to the gym.

i remember when i first got started, i was so nervous. i expected the place to be filled with douchbags and tough guys. i procrastinated too for a while. when i got there i was really surprised to find humble, friendly people. for one thing, i forgot it was a business and they want your money. but more importantly, it was how quickly and decisively idiots get weeded out of the member pool.

once you've been around for a while you begin to see the trend. guys come in, think they are the shit, get popped, they cry, and then they leave. its the ones who check their ego at the door who have success. because no matter how bad ass you think you are, the guy with some real training is going to whoop your ass every time.

every. time.

anyway, glad i stuck it out, and now i'm the old timer with pictures and medals and shit hanging on the walls.

kid - go down to ceasar's, get the unlimited BJJ plan and start rolling.

Yes Reaper, that's the gym.

All this BJJ talk is making me jealous. When I get a promotion and can afford to start training again I may go check out B quicks gym. I know his past and how he's been shamed but my chiropractor(Black Belt) has been telling me he's turned his life around and is a much more humble guy. If I could afford to go to my original gym in Plano I'd do that, but the drive is just too far.

B. Quick for sure has a bad reputation for his past. I hear he's actually a good grappler, but I'd really go back and read more about what he did, or didn't do, before joining his gym. I don't remember all of th me specifics, but people were pretty pissed at the time.

I went to a Reily Bodycomb seminar at his gym back in 09 and he seemed like a cool guy. I'm just not a trusting person so I am really contemplating going there. I'm gonna see if I can't get a free trial, or just a month without a contract to see how it is. If I want to get back to BJJ that's really the only place close enough for me to train until I get back to Dallas permanently.
