Vitamix VS Juicing

I drink at least 1 vitamix blend every day (morning) and make a juice in the afternoon, although I skip the juice from time to time.

Do you have a system going for yourself?

What kind of juices are you making?

I just juice.

I typically juice a combo of:

Ginger
Carrots
Celery
Kale (sometimes Collards or Swiss Chard or some other green).
Spinach
Flat Leaf Parsley
Lemon or Lime
Beets
Broccoli
Squash, Zuchinni, Cucumber
Apple

Mix and match the above but usually has all of those or most in it.

I feel better than I have in my entire life.

Been juicing for 4 months.

Vitamix VS Juicing

I have a juicer, a blender, and a Vitamix. I use all 3 depending on my mood and desires. Some things are easier to make with one machine compared to another machine. I sometimes get sick of using the same machine all the time and want to do something different.

Sometimes, I want vegetable juice (juicer)

Sometimes, I want a quick fruit smoothie (blender)

Sometimes, I want to make homemade almond butter (vitamix)

I also like the Vitamix for "liquid salads". Everything you would but in your salad, just put in your Vitamix, it blends/purees it all down into a smooth green liquid.

Vitamix is basically a very high powered blender and food processor all in one.

Vitamix VS Juicing

I just stick with juicing.

My routine basically has a 16 oz vegetable only juice (collards, carrots, celery) as you can train your tastebuds to make it seem sweeter. For fruit I just eat vast amounts of it so there is no need for a blender.

Example: 1.5 pounds of frozen berries in the morning, 1 shot ACV, 1 table spoon chlorella. Then eat maybe 2 bananas during the day, take 5 capsules of fish oil, eat seafood, veggies and some brown rice. Same workout routine followed by protein shake, then at night before going to bed swig back a 16 oz vegetable juice.

In terms of making a juice taste good, couldn't care less. Same old tired life philosophy, if it works don't care if it is "hard" "bad tasting" or "difficult". Results are results and that is the only thing that matters.

Just PM MikeCF for all the info you need, the amount of time he spent researching and learning all of it will save you tons of time.

G,

Tested your blend this afternoon. I used too much beet and now my mouth is a bit numb, but it's legit nonetheless.

What model juicer are you using?

Vitamix VS Juicing

I've been blending daily for about two years now. I didn't get sick despite the crazy flu going around this season. I had a few days I felt like I was getting sick, and then bam, 5 hours later I felt like nothing ever happened.

The pros of blending is your getting a full meal. You can toss in some nuts -- almonds & walnuts help you produce more good cholesterol. A much better choice than taking some medication that makes you depressed and interferes with erections.

The downsides of blending -- if your have some other strict regimen, your adding a lot more calories. Usually mine come out to about 600-1000 depending on the nut volume.

I've juiced before, I didn't have the best juicer, but it was kind of a pain in the ass. Blending takes me like 30 seconds of effort. Easier than making a cup of coffee.

I've said this before in defense of the "paleo" diet, your better off eating fresh produce in place of grains. Your getting all kinds of vitamins and nutrients, many which we don't really know how they affect your body. There are plenty of studies that show things like if you have a chronic vitamin A deficiency you will have vision problems. We can document what that level is and then make pills with that stuff in it, or in other cases the government makes food producers fortify their products with those vitamins. But, there are all kinds of other things going on that are not yet well documented. Then the interactions of these things together add another layer of complexity. Ever look at the nutrition label for green tea (without sugar.) There is basically nothing in it, then why is it so good for you?

Maximizing the diversity and bio availability of what your eating "trains" your body to react positively to different substances and stresses.

Thats why I think blending is better than juicing, because with blending your getting everything, whatever the fuck it is.

There is the whole blood sugar thing with juice too. If you already eat really well and never had any diabetes related issues then its probably not a big deal.

Yeah, I should have mentioned to go easy on the beets.

I won't do beets every day either.

Also, you can wilt the beet greens in a pan with a little olive oil and garlic. They are supposed to be real good for you, although do some research as there are kind of conflicting reports.

Ginger is real good but go easy on that one too. Unless you like a ton of kick.

I just use this juicer, nothing fancy: http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-Mou...B000FHQJ6C

I highly recommend it. Cheap too. Best money I ever spent.

Well, that and for a pack of smokes.

Which juicer to you use?

Yes, beets kicked my ass.

No, I have not because my tea is just "tea." That's the fucking point.

Why is it good for you? I don't know, but the this dude does.

This guy likes his:

I personally would not travel with my BlendTec. Based on what the guy wrote, I'm gonna grab one for traveling. If it sucks, it was $50. Oh well, I'll leave it in the alley for someone who needs it more and who would use it.

Yeah.

Guys really argue and get hyped over this stuff. Never made sense to me.

Do you drink wine or beer or hard liquor? Answer is, "It depends."

The line that juicing is bad because there is no fiber is nonsense though and has been refuted by real life. People who begin juicing often go off diabetes medication and "cure" their diabetes.

If blood sugar is such an issue, why isn't there a diabetes epidemic among juicers?

That is what I was thinking. Good for travel or if you are somewhere for 4 months, just buy one and toss it at the end of your trip. Or give it to your doorman or something as a gift.

Do you know where to buy one for $50?

Amazon sells them for $120.

I've heard some bro science claiming insulin causes pre-mature ageing. Bro science is often bullshit, granted. But given that unhealthy people tend to consume high amounts of sugar, in the form of processed foods, I'm inclined to believe this particular piece of bro folklore.

More seriously, we know insulin fuels cancer cells. That's mainstream science. If true, it's obvious insulin spikes should be avoided long-term.

it leads to insulin resistance and diabetes, that's why.

For the same reason they recommend, if you must drink it at all, to consume OJ with pulp, to slow down the sugar absorption

2 things about juice, fruits and blood sugar:

1 - If you are overweight and trying to lose weight, it might be an effective strategy to go low carb for a short period of time...like a month or so. This gets the body into ketosis and you burn off a lot of your excess fat and ketosis has helped a lot of people to "reset" their metabolism and such. But once you've lost most of your excess weight, you can and should add healthy carb sources back into your diet.

2 - The problem with fruit juice or fruit consumption is ONLY a concern if you don't exercise, are not in shape, and eat a lot of fast food/processed foods. The body was designed to handle the periodic blood sugar spike after eating food.

It's the chronic blood sugar elevation that occurs from eating processed foods (white flour, crap vegetable oils, high fructose corn syrup etc.). When you become a "sugar burner" and are not fat adapted, you get the blood sugar roller coaster effect, the energy crashes, and the need to eat every few hours just to avoid feeling sick.

If that's you, than yes, you should avoid too much fruit and fruit juices. But if you're fat adapted, eat a healthy diet of fresh, real food, and you exercise and/or workout, eat your fruit and drink your juice! It's all good.

I just bought a nutribullet a couple weeks ago and I think its amazing!

I hate eating vegtables and so I tried juicing for awhile and still do it but it absolutely hate cleaning the damn thing it takes forever. the whole process of making a few jars of juice and cleaning everything up takes me like an hour

The nutribullet seriously takes 5 min a day. I throw some vegtables and fruit in blend it then wash the cup out in the sink and Im done. I think its the best thing for lazy people like me

I got mine for 80 dollars I think from bed bath and beyond with their coupon. I think they still offer it, you go to their website give them your email and they mail you a one time 20% off anything in the store coupon then you print it off and unsubscribe from their emails and they just scan the coupon at the store

I thought of that after I bought a new one.

Maybe I will try today if it is not too much of a hassle.

Thanks.

I have a "Magic Bullet".

[Image: images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQR6Fln9_rJZjaD009UvVc...56V3SlhVIA]

Basically, the exact same thing as the "nutri-bullet". A little chaeper, but, it's not cheap, it's durable.

It's basically a mini-blender.

I got it a Walgreens for like 40 bucks. Target has them, and Kmart.

I use it to make salsa. Throw in 2 roasted tomatoes, an onion, a jalapeno, a little cilantro, lime juice, salt, and you are good to go.

For green salsa use roasted tomatillos instead of tomatoes.

G,

You obviously need a juicer. But, I don't think you need a "nutri-bullet", food processor or "vita-mix".

A juicer and a blender can accomplish 90% of your work.

You kind of have to play around with them to determine which machine you want to for which task.

For me,

juice = juicer

protein shake/smoothie = blender or bullet

salsa = bullet or blender

pesto sauce or almond butter or frozen fruit sorbet = vita-mix

liquid salad = vita-mix

I am anal about this shit. This is a big part of my life. My family gives me appliances like this for Christmas/Birthdays.

Again, I think all you need is a juicer and a blender....?

I'm thinking about getting either a vitamix or a blendtec. I was at the beach and they were able to blend up kale and spinach easily with coconut water and some fruits and it was excellent. They use a vitamix there. I thought you needed a juicer for that, and I not a fan of the thinness of the juices I have tried so far. Also you can make almond butter with it which is getting quite expensive these days.

You can use it to make almond bread, as a spread, and just eat it raw. Its healthier than peanut butter but costs twice as much. Has more selenium, less omega 6 fats and I think tastes better.

I have a vitamix and talked about it in the main juicing thread. My juices are more like smoothies because with vitamix you are getting everything in your drink. I don't have a juicer and seem to do fine with vitamix. I make a lot of watermelon smoothies and green spinach smoothies as well. Gio got it right when he said vitamix is like a blender and a juicer in one. You can do so much stuff with vitamix.

I got the vitamix professional 200 series which is red and is 48oz. My last blender was 48 oz so I'm used to that size. Also its 17.5" as opposed to the 64 oz version which is a whopping 20"! That sucker doesn't fit under cabinets too well, since I have an 18" clearance.

Do you have to push down on the lid when you have it on high settings? When I had soap in it, on a high setting, the soap started shooting out. Granted I might have not sealed the top well yet. Not used to it.

You can make frozen margaritas with it!

No, you don't have to push down on the lid when it's on high. You probably did not seal the lid that well. I will hold it sometimes because the blender will start turning on high if you need to run it for a longer period of time. It really is a wonderful machine. I tried the cookies and ice-cream recipe that was in one of the books that came with it. It was amazing but I have only done that once. Mostly I use it to make fruit and/or veggie smoothies.

The books that come with it have a lot of fatty recipes, best not to try too many of them [Image: lol.gif].
