This is really hard to say. It largely depends on the individual : how well he feels the rhythm and music, how comfortable he moves his body. Also it depends on the instructor a lot : many instructors would only teach you this combo, that combo, but not so much on how to execute the basic steps right and make it look nice and natural along with the music. In another word they teach you dancing mechanically, but not naturally.
If you got a good feel of the music and the instructor is good, and you take class and practice every week, I'd say 3 months you can be become decent.

The first thing is to find what is the most popular style in your city. There are many styles : NY style which is dance on 2 ( contra-tempo), as for on 1, LA style which is mostly for flashy performance and took a lot of elements from West Coast Swing and ballroom dancing, not my cup of tea for sure. Cuban Style can be danced on 1, actually most Cuban dancers I know dance on 1, also Puerto Rican style, Colombia style, mostly on one.
In different cities or even in different venues of the same city the popular styles can be different. E.g., pretty much nobody would dance LA style in Colombia or in Cuba, but in North America it's very popular. Before you go to a venue to dance make sure you know what style people dance there. Here in Toronto Cuban dancers rarely mix with LA style dancers and vice-versa. I myself don't mind either although I strongly perfer Cuban style and Afro-cuban Rumba simply because it's more fun and more playful.

My suggestion : find a good school or instructors, I personally prefer Latino instructors simply because they're more fun and it's much more enjoyable to learn dancing with them because they're more natural unlike many trained dancers. My current teachers are Cubano and a girl from Angola. They're infinitely better than those boring-ass Canadian instructors. Fuck, some of them are so dull to watch : I saw instructors move like a fucking truck, no body movement what-soever and they even teach?

Besides Salsa, other popular dancing you can learn : Bachata, Kizomba ( popular in Europe, not so much yet in Toronto. I'm gonna learn it after I move to Europe), Zouk ( it started getting popular in Toronto), reggaeton ( mostly solo dancing , body movement etc)

Dancing is fun regardless of the bonus of meeting women. I started it only because a female friend asked me to be her partner but now I truly enjoy it. It makes me happy to move with the music and I don't need a partner to enjoy it. The thing is that once you become good at it, you attract women easily. ( of course dress nice and having a fun personality won't hurt either). Nine out of 10 times when I go clubbing (not Salsa), I stand out from the crowds because average guys can't dance to save their lives. And women see it. Many times girls would come up to me, dancing with/grinding me without me approaching them.

seems like alot of people here are recommending europe. I havent lived in north america, so dont know how bad it is.

But what do you guys think of latin america? someone on this forum said he went to argentina, peru, and it didnt wow him. I can kind of relate to this. In argentina, the culture is more like spanish and italian, quite difficult for outsiders (unlike brazil). Peru I got alot of stares from mainly young girls who thought i was K pop and wanted to take pictures with me.

But other areas of Latin america? i am thinking, ecuador is abit like peru, panama and venezuela are abit like colombia, brazil is unique, bolivia wouldnt bother (too ugly girls), mexico (good but girls abit short although they do like chinos)

And how about the rest of the world?
Africa? I banged a Zambian girl in London, but she was like more british, born and grew up there. What do you guys think of black girls, my parents would allow me, but i prefer morena or EE better.

I think Asian looking dudes will do really well here. I mean Asian like Korean features or somewhat chinky eyes and tall as they deviate from the norm.

I look Colombian. Lol. Brown skin type. I wasn't expecting it but I can walk down the street and no1 will have the slightest clue.

I don't think looking like a Latino has any distinct advantages. But my Spanish is very sharp so it helps me.

I think what makes Colombian a good place to game is

1.) Target rich -- an average girl here is above average in the states
2.) Open culture -- they are quite friendlier than in the US

Asians are seen as rich, especially Japanese and Koreans. High Status.

An Asian guy going to the bars with other Asian or white guys isn't a real advantageous or disadvantageous thing. Just make sure you spend some time gaming with the pack but then remembering to separate yourself from the pack "accidentally" running into other girls and approaching independently too.

I haven't been to Argentina either, but I have a really good friend from Sri Lanka who did an architecture project in Buenos Aires for 5-6 months. He said he did quite well as the women there are very receptive towards Asians. My friend however has more of a Latin tone to him despite being from Sri Lanka yet said I'd maybe do well there. My game is slightly above his.

He collected a few flags there but mainly stuck around this one chick who was his unofficial girlfriend in BA. Rosario was cool, but Cordoba was the best city according to him. I think he did well with the chase bc he was so happy to just be around all those gorgeous women that he found himself working harder unknowingly while having fun. I might be at a disadvantage with more of an Eastern Asian look but my Spanish, Rioplatense Spanish, Portunhol, and Portuguese is sufficient enough.

That's the key though. Have fun with the pursuit using good strategy as the results will come.

This sounds way off to me. From the small amount of time I've spent in FSU places girls there are very interested in (East) Asian men (primarily Japanese, because of wealth, but Chinese/[South] Korean are catching up) and others (in Kyiv my friend's girlfriend, blond ethnic Russian on both sides but raised in Ukraine, said Turkish men were her favorite)

Also talked one time in Philly to a blond Russian stripper from Tomsk, she had studied Chinese in college, when I asked her why she replied nonchalantly because it was the most powerful country in the world. (Other friend's wife who is Japanese and studied in Russia said Russian women like Central Asian men because they have a reputation for lasting longer sexually than Russian men.)

Coming from an Asian guy, GO TO POLAND. It's a fact Polish chicks in the UK aren't good looking, but go to Warsaw, Poznan, Wroclaw, and I hear Katowice is good too for very attractive women that dig Asian dudes. This sounds like bullshit, I have heard the exact opposite about Polish girls liking Asian men, every account I have heard of Polish girls indicate that they are racist and generally don't want foreigners as much. Either you got left-overs that you thought were top-caliber girls or you are exaggerating. I have lived in asia for over a decade now. I'm a fairly average looking asian guy. I dress well. I don't throw money around. I have a social circle. I pull way better than the vast majority of foreign and whatever expats/tourists in asia. I know this because I have eyeballs and am plugged into the social network here.
