Having chalked off just 2 Russian cities...Moscow and Kaliningrad, fancy another trip into Russia very soon...question is to where.

I was thinking either Togliatti or Kaluga...anybody been to either / both and can provide comments on opportunities for hot student types

Also, what other cities are recommended......

After reading some references in this forum and other webs, I have been checking the talent of the Siberian region and some other russian cities in Couchsurfing and I am so impressed by the talent to the point I am tempted to book a flight to Russia.

Consider Samara, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tomsk and Kemerovo.

I wish I studied Russian instead of Spanish. I don't even like spanish girls. I'd love to hit some of these smaller cities, alas no it's not worth the heartache.

Somebody mentioned Murmaks, come on! it is in the middle of nowhere in Artic circle... And if you don´t go there in the very summer you will wish to have never known about that city.

I would advise for example Novgorod or Nizhny Novgorod

Novgorod in in middle way between Moscow and S.Petersburg, it´s quite interesting medium-size city. Almost not foreigners tourists(but lot of local ones)
Still has enough size to hold some night life and interesting place to know girls.

Nizhny Novgorod,(Not to confuse with previous one, they are very distant)I´ve never been there. But is one of the biggest cites of Russia, acording what I´ve heard It has quite nice night atmosphere, over all spring and summer , and reasoneably easy to go there from Moscow.

P.S I´d advise to go to these cities after having been in Peter and Moscow. In Peter I´d advise more to go in late spring than is summer since in summer quite many students return to their hometowns and even young people who stay preffer to enjoy some weekends at Dachas(countryside houses) with family and friens.

What about Kazan and Yaroslavl ? Those seems to be interesting historical cities. A friend of mine had spent a few months in Kazan as a student and he seemed to enjoy himself there.

Also wondering about places like Tver and Vladimir.

Kazan is a pretty nice city. I spend almost a week there.

There is a rectangle you can draw over a pocket in Russia.

Novgorod, down to Samara, right to Chelyabinsk up to Perm. All those shitty little industrial towns and wastelands in between included in those cities are packed to the rafters. They are shitholes, but the women are unbelievable and the ratios are some of the best I have ever experienced. These are all Tier 2, more tier 3 cities

There is always east if you dont mind the travel. Vladivostok has really come along given its proximity to China, so its a decent place to visit by Russian standards.

Russian is needed though.

A general guide, hmm let me see...

Things to do, Attractions like sights, theatres, sports venues, recreational attractions like bowling alleys and such, restaurants, pubs, niteclubs and apartment rentals.

@ Brown Bear.....so I have narrowed my next trip down to I think either Samara, Togliatti, Kaluga (Togliatti and Kaluga are on my list as next year I could be living in one of the two cities!), Ekaterinburg or Novosibirsk........can you give a short pro's and con's list for each please ?

Ps - I do speak Russian but am not fluennt....but can definitely get by.

have fun in Kaluga))) quickly becoming one of russias biggest automobile producing citys. Tolyatti (you must love cars) is where the LADA is produced.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HC_Lada_Togliatti even the hockey team is named after it. If you have a car you are screwed there, roads are shit, traffic jams in tolyatti make moscow look like rural idaho. Organized crime is huge in tolyatti, extremely corrupt officials there. don't buy a car there..
