What's wrong with my arm?

Sometimes pain or discomfort in your limbs is a neck issue, and not actually an injury in the area where you're experiencing the pain. Maybe you have some kind of nerve irritation that's causing it, and the source is your spine. Sleeping in a bad position, or a poor mattress can cause it.

Alright I think I isolated it. It's right behind my elbow, where my tripcep connects to the elbow. It hurts if I massage it.

What do you mean "more than a week after I last worked out"? Are you only working out once a week? That's the problem.

Obviously, you somehow over stressed your elbow-tricep connection. Likely while lifting weights. (Sometimes it takes a week for these things to show up)

Sometimes we have so much adrenaline and testosterone flowing that we cant feel these little strains when they happen.

The usual suspects:

lifting heavy and "shocking-straining" the ligaments/tendons/muscle
failing to get a good warm up
slept with your arm in a weird position
bumped it against a girls knee during sex but didnt really feel it
"over-use" injury from weight lifting

Should go away with 1-2 weeks of rest.

I was going to the gym in Croatia 3x a week. Then I arrived in the USA (no gym near me). A week after I was in the States, the pain started.

Sometimes temperature and/or altitude changes can cause muscles/ligaments/tendons to ache a bit. Especially, if they have been working hard for a long time. Rest itself can also expose "over-use" issues.

What's wrong with my arm?

Whenever I quit weight lifting for very long, I get all kinds of body pain.

I actually think that since the muscle is not getting stressed any more, it's somehow causing pain from not getting it's fix. I've lifted continually for months before with no pains during any lifting so this is how I see it.

Try the old prescription of your own forum: Apple Cider Vinegar. Mix a spoon of it with half glass of water and drink it before meals. If it does nothing, then yes, doctor.

(Last week I had a pain in my ankle and it went away with ACV)

Okay I have a weird problem with pain in my left arm.

If I carry a grocery bag with my left arm (or anything else with even light weight like my Kindle), I get a sharp pain around the elbow area when I release the item and bend my arm more than 90 degrees. And if I keep my arm bent for a long time, I also get that pain if I flex it completely straight. There is minor pain when moving it through the full range of motion, even if I don't carry anything, always around the elbow.

The pain is around the elbow area (not bicep or tricep). It started randomly, more than a week after I last worked out. My right arm is fine. It has lasted for 2 weeks.

Get some bulk cissus powder from Amazon. 1 kilogram should cost about $100 and last you 6 months. The stuff works, and in my opinion is the only herb that works. Will take care of it it in 2-3 weeks.

The states will do that to you man. I had a similar pain to yours around my knee starting a couple weeks ago, it has come back a few times but I just keep working out through it and surprisingly after a good workout the pain is gone.

If you're saying it's at the back of the elbow could be a few things:

If it's tender where the tricep attaches to - could be a tricep tendinopathy - have you been doing lots of dips lately?

Have you previously hyperextended the elbow or had any elbow injuries in the past?

Is there much swelling at the back of elbow?

Also don't see a general DR about these things, they don't know shit.

If you're not growing, you're dying.

While we are on this topic, any way to protect and strengthen our joints? It seems like a fucking bitch of an injury that every one gets and nobody knows how to make them stronger.

Let me guess, you used to do a lot of bicep curls to increase the size of your guns?

Had the same injury. Takes a while to heal. Wear elbow supports on both arms from now on before lifting and do warm-ups/stretch before and after your lift session.

More prevalent for guys in their 30s and 40s as the body starts to slow down.

It's an inflammation-based injury. Eat more inflammation-fighting foods. Fish oils, vegetables, green vegetables.

Wear a hoodie when stretching and during my work-up/warm-up sets. Keep it on until you break a sweat.

Unless I'm doing guns and want to be vain and check myself out (then it's take top time), I wear long-sleeved Henley style shirts from H&M. They are only $9 or so. I have around 10 of them.

Eat right and keep your joints warm is basically the best bet.

When direct injury hits, use Traumeel or Arnica gel.

Strengthening joints is not very complicated but it is hard to do. Basically anything that causes it to bear a great load will make the joint stronger. Curling exercises will not help to condition the elbows.

So for the elbows, handstand work, front lever work, planque progressions, and iron cross progressions.

Of the three, handstands or their barbell corollary will help you the most. To be completely honest I think that most people are not cut out for the last three. Me included so far. It's very difficult to get past the initial progressions if you're a fully grown adult.

With barbell/machine work; the overhead press, the overhead carry, and some cable machines. With the overhead press, make sure to lock out completely (and pause).
I'm not extremely familiar with cable machines and do recommend the gymnastic route out of convenience.

As Mike said, you can eat foods that can maximise your joint health. Anti inflammatories like oils (olive oil supposed to be good), vegetables can help maximise joint health.

The joints aren't really designed to grow in strength. Their purpose is supposed to be hinges so that you can move as a biomechanical organism and not damn R2D2 from Star Wars. Elbow, knees, pelvis, shoulder, all that kind of stuff.
I think muscular flexibility can help so that at all times you are moving the way you are supposed to and not heaping too much stress on the joints. It's all about equal dissipation of stress load.
Do yoga or some kind of total body stretching and keep your oil intakes and veg intakes high.

The rest is fortune.

Get a good warm up. Don't over stress the joints and muscles until they are properly lubricated and blood is flowing.

Also, USE PERFECT FORM WHILE LIFTING!!!

Eat right, like MikeCF described.

The videos below should fix your problem.

Looks silly, but doing this stuff for 10 minutes /day has serious benefits you can feel after 2 weeks.

Are you doing triceps extensions? They can be really hard on the area you're describing. I'd swap them with e.g. close grip bench presses.

Sounds like it might be triceps tendinitis: http://www.physioadvisor.com.au/9588650/...ysioad.htm

I've dealt with this myself. You should cut out the following lifts for a few weeks:

- Flat bench press
- Dips
- Skullcrushers (the worst)
- Weighted pullups

After a few weeks of total rest start up the following exercises:

- Wide grip pushups
- Assisted dips (off a bench, with legs parallel to floor resting on another bench)
- Light weight cable tricep extensions
- Cable rows

I mostly avoid that first list of exercises these days because they aggravate my elbows. The good thing is that none of them are really indispensable, so you can substitute other exercises pretty easily.

Went to the doctor today. They did an x-ray and ultrasound. Diagnosis: tendinitis. He said it's a mild case. I'm going to do a couple sessions of PT to learn some exercises for self care.

*** it can be caused by many things- google tendonitis and scroll down to the orthopedics.about.com website. They have some pretty good info there, sorry I cant link to it though.
