Fired for Trolling

Canada is out of control most days, apparently some guy trolled a facebook page, sure it was regarding a girls suicide but some woman took it upon herself to email his employer about it...completely unrelated to his job and they fired him.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/st...mment.html

That seems like its way over the top to me, next thing you know people will be getting fired from their job because some girl went on a date with a guy and decided he was 'creepy' and emailed her opinion to his employer. Opinions? Would this fly anywhere else but Canada?

A man's livelihood is now connected to his personal life. If you don't run your own business, it's just a matter of time until it happens to you.

Yea, probably. I could see it happening in the US.

He would be jailed if he lived in England.

How do you bully someone who is already dead?

There's got to be a way this guy can sue.

I'm sure in this country people have already been fired, or not hired, because of something they posted on Facebook or Twitter. Some employers will search to find out about your personal life. If you feel tempted to post about something controversial or sensitive, you always need to stop and think about how it will be received by someone that doesn't really know you, and is looking for a reason to nail you.

They should publicly lash/whip the people in charge of firing him. Too bad the public doesn't give a shit these days.

This is a good thing maybe, so hear me out.

I was thinking about high school the other day. My brother graduated a handful of years ahead of me. His class did some cool shit, like smash an old car before football games. The bonfire was post game. This was on school grounds. All this was gone when I graduated. I think 6 signed up for the senior trip, and no one skipped on senior skip day. No one gave a fuck.

The same was happening in colleges, and I saw the same pattern in the military. This was mid 90's. Here and after corporations started eliminating company picknick's and family days. Our social lives were constricted. Then comes the internet. The herds migrated to the WWW and it's where we've been ever since. But it was a safe place free from liability. We had freedoms, but they are threatened.

Now people are getting jailed and fired for online comments. The place isn't safe anymore, and as laws and policies, both in government and in the private sectors emerge, people will again migrate. They will shut off their social sites, including dating ones, and move on. Back to reality? Will bars be places for pickup again? Work centers fun places to be?

I'm just throwing this out, as it's been on my mind as of late. Am I far off the mark?

"At-will" employment--the notion "either party" can terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any reason--which was only instituted on a wide scale in recent decades, allows these kind of unjust terminations. The contract clause is really designed to benefit employers, since employees have always been able to walk away from jobs.

For those of you who hate regulation: this is the product of "free-market" principles in practice. "Labor" is a throw-away commodity you can dissolve for any bullshit reason. You have no protections, because you're just a pair of hands.

In France, they have laws against firing people.

This 15 year old girl killed herself because some guy was stalking her for years over the internet and threatening her and her family, trying to blackmail her into pornography. A week after she commits suicide some random dude posts "About time this bitch died" on a Facebook memorial page for her where her parents, family, friends, etc. will see...this is the shit y'all are defending?

I understand and support the need for a certain level of privacy on the internet but this isn't an issue of privacy. This is an issue of people talking recklessly on the internet because they think they're safe from any repercussions hiding behind their computer screen. They didn't go to his page and look at his picture or google his posts in forums like this one. This wasn't some rant about government spending or abortion. He needlessly said some vile shit on the memorial page for some dead teenage girl and it caught up to his ass.

What you do outside of work should be none of your employer's business. I don't think anyone in this threads supports his post on Facebook but it's retarded to get fired over voicing your opinion on the fucking internet.

Of course! No one said you can't fire incompetent employees, but you should have to present cause. This at-will bullshit is what enables employers to fire you if one chick complains that you looked at her ass too long or they don't agree with some (perfectly legal) stuff you said on the Internet or the fat-lady middle manager is threatened by your talent.

All that shit happens. And, because you were "at-will" you have no legal recourse when they fire your-ass.

There was no stalking. She got into a catfight with a girl because she fucked her boyfriend and then that girl's friends starting hating on her for it. She took dozens of nudes of her tits and pussy which floated around the internet. She stripped off in chatrooms for dozens of guys to see. She wasn't blackmailed into it, I saw a censored collage of them on Facebook, she's smiling and has her friends in the room with her in some of them. She was basically a massive attention whore, hence her suicide note video on Youtube. The suicide was a tragedy, but don't go pedestalizing this girl and spreading bullshit about her trying to make her a saint. She wasn't.

I haven't followed the story closely at all but the last I heard there was a 32 year old man in Canada who had been directly linked to harassing her over a period of several years and sending a single naked photograph to family and friends on several occasions even as she moved and changed schools to avoid it. The guy's identity was confirmed by the hacker group "Anonymous" who are directly related to 4chan so I took their word for it as they tend to be experts on underage girl and internet related topics but they could be wrong for all I know.

Either way, the guy was dumb for posting what he did. It wasn't an opinion, it was an incendiary remark posted for a reaction using a non-anonymous Facebook account on the memorial page of a girl who had been international news for a month and the company fired him rather than risk the shitstorm of negative public perception they could easily find themselves in because of his idiotic behavior. They will fuck with your money before they ever let you fuck with theirs, that is common sense.

Be very careful trusting the media when they talk about Anonymous, they don't realize that the average "hacker" in Anonymous is literally a fat pimply 14 year old /b/tard whose only "hacking" is doing DDOS attacks with the program LOIC, which is as easy to do as downloading and opening a document.

Is this actually what happened. The article says that lots of memorial pages have popped up and that this guy left an anonymous comment on one of them. It's unclear exactly what that means.

If this guy was trolling the girl's family, then I don't have any sympathy. However, this seems more like he left a comment on a random site, one of many that internet attention whores like to put up so they feel connected to the news story of the moment. There's a difference between being a bully and being the asshole at the back of the room making off-color comments.
