WW3 starts. Do you enlist?

There's a lot of ways WW3 could go down. Maybe the Middle East goes shishkabobs and the major powers take different sides.
In any case, would you voluntarily enlist in your country's military if WW3 did happen right now? Or would you go ghost and loot and pillage while the world burns?
Assume your country is fully committed.

Oh hell nah.
I'd arm myself and attempt to live peacefully somewhere remote.

Fighting on the behalf of any government is probably one of the dumbest things you can do.

Defending your home from armed intruders and enlisting to fight in a state military are two, vastly different ordeals.

I expect at some point in our lifetime I will be defending our country from the american army or the blue hats. Especially because I live in resource rich Alberta.
One thing to keep an eye on more and more is the water wars going on between Canada and the US. No one talks about it up here but there is some high profile murders/deaths.

Also I would never join our military just to be flown across the world to fight wars of aggression on our part.

I'd go to officer candidate school, preferably with an aim towards Air Force service. Hope to survive the whole ordeal (more likely as an officer in the AF than as a grunt in the Army) and parlay my experience into a lucrative post-war career.
WW3 is unlikely, of course, and it going nuclear is even less likely. People fear the consequences far too much.

I think a lot of you are assuming you'll have a choice that you probably won't have.
If a reasonably conventional world war started in the same vein as the cold war skirmishes but on a larger scale and involving all the Western powers, chances are it'd be prison or drafted. If it is a nuclear war, it'll be encampments and then drafting as and how the government of your country would see fit.
Once, I tried planning an escape route should immediate drafting be called into effect, and my findings were that unless you had prior warning of a clamp down, you'd have no chance. Say for instance, Iran dropped a warhead on Tel Aviv or something similar; there'd be lockdowns all over the place within the hour. I guess if you started off in a rural place and went more rural you might have a chance to make it a couple of months if you're in Canada or something, before you were put in prison for being a defector or spy.

Hopefully I will be somewhere else and can chill out somewhere peacefully with my family if such a thing happens. Let's all hope it doesn't.

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." -- Albert Einstein
World War III is taking place right now. It is being fought in cyber space with financial weapons. Ask any American what had more of an effect on them: planes flying into towers vs. underwater mortgages.
WW 4 will be the ultimate resolution to what started in the 1930s. Anti-gay movement, anti-socialism, anti-feminism. You would be surprised how many of us would have sided with Hitler back in the day... believe it or not.

A good shooting war is a great way for an enterprising man to make a lot of money. Knowing what I know - I would get myself into the show and get rich doing so; First option would be to join the "company", in particular the clandestine services. From there, I could potentially make a lot of money and have a lot of sex. Short of that, I would join the military as a quiet, unassuming supply officer - potentially a lot of money but less/no sex. Hell, if I was a C-17 driver during the salad days of Afgan - I would have tried my best to backhaul heroin to Germany.

Men go to the war since that's what men should do.
Will they get the respect from the American wives when they return home?
If I say something like 'each gender has roles', American women would get really mad.
What would they say to the fact there are virtually no women in a war zone? (dangerous positions)

Depending on how hairy it got, you could just enlist in college if you wanted to avoid serving. It's worked for people before.

Nope.
I'm not fighting in any war. As an atheist, I think this life is the only one I've got, and I'm not risking my precious skin voluntarily.

It's cheaper to pay Mercs then run a Draft.
No health care or veteran pensions with
The truth of the matter is that as scary as it sounds WWIII is inevitable. My guess is within 10-15 yrs.
Get ready.

Call me naive, but I think the day of large scale wars between major powers is over. Most fighting in the future will be regional conflicts where we use drones and small battalions of Marines in a precise and surgical operation. Operations like Libya or seal team six.
I think war in Europe is over. There will not be another war fought on European soil. There will likely be none in the Americas either. Latin American countries are most focused now on building their economies, not border skirmishes. India and Pakistan, N Korea, Israel and Iran are continuing hot spots. I don't think we'd go to war over Pakistan and India, but if Israel were attacked we'd likely be drawn in. N Korea probably poses the biggest threat of a major world conflict. That country is just batshit crazy. I don't see us going to war with China. They are too focused on building their economy and attacking the US would be financial suicide given how much of our debt they've bought. It's not in their interests to go to war with us. Africa will continue to see wars and skirmishes of all sort, but these countries are militarily weak and pose no threat outside of Africa.
I think a conflict that would require a draft is very unlikely in the foreseeable future.
