I think it's a primal and real fear based in part on how higher ranking males sometimes dominate lower males by forcing them into homosexual subservience. Gay phobia, willingness to die before going gay, is adaptive as part of the K selected honor code. You need very strong emotional checks to get something like that done. It's no more schizophrenic than male obsession with female fidelity, even though today with paternity testing that's not as much of an issue.
