The new sub-$1000 DSLR cameras (e.g. Canon EOS Rebel T3i) combined with good lenses can take very very decent 1080p video. Get a SteadyCam (about $800) to prevent shaking and you have a very solid, mobile and inexpensive rig, provided you have the skills to do it. I imagine TravelBum is rolling with something like that. If I was traveling perpetually like Roosh I would definitely look into this as it has both pussy and money-making potential. And is a good hobby and skill to have.

As for monetizing, that is tricky. As with everything, you try to grow a sizable audience and hopefully get a deal or an investor. Having an already popular blog would definitely help a lot.
